BORDER JUDGE MANCHESTER 10

Border Terriers

It was, again, a pleasure to judge the breed. I thought that there was a lack of depth in quality in some classes though those which were placed were more representative of the Standard. A few entries lacked true type & one almost questioned what other breed was involved in their lineage. The most recurring fault was in front movement which was a testament to some loaded shoulders.

MPD (5,1a)

1 Peacock’s Ragatam Lets Go, good head shape & length of neck, narrow through the body & carries correct topline. Moved well but I would not want him to grow on more as he is big enough now;

2 Hill’s Ragatam Legend, little shorter coupled than his litter brother & didn’t move so freely behind. Coat rather between stages but good thick skin. Another nice dog but also big enough;

3 Baker’s Bandicoot Integrity to Jaslou.

PD (2)

1 Singh’s Comberdown Jailbreak to Vandamere, correct sized dog, typy head, pleasing reach of neck, good depth of body, ribs carried well back, moved with drive, in really good coat, thick skin;

2 Wallace’s Hobholt Han Solo, bigger dog & I wonder what weight he will be when mature & muscled up. In heavy coat.

JD (11,2)

1 Harrison’s Iacheslei Cantus, dog of more correct size than some others which are likely to become rather coarse when mature. Good thick skin, correct double coat, kept his topline on the move, shoulder well laid back, allowing free movement;

2 Golding’s Ashbrae Fellman at Beaconpike, strong dog, bigger than 1 but spannable. Good angulation in hindquarters, moved well with drive, in good coat;

3 Lowry’s Ravenside Ballymoss.

PGD (13,2)

1 Sharp’s Radnorvalley Goshawk of Rhozzum, the size, weight & shape to be capable of carrying out the function of a working terrier, ribs carried well back, fairly deep but narrow, not overdone in any way, well balanced;

2 Mitchell’s Ragatam Joker at Paleside, little more of him than 1 & wider in shoulder. Overall of good quality, in the best of harsh, double coats with thick pelt, nice type;

3 Hodgson’s Solitary Mist.

LD (11,1)

1 Gilpin’s Otterbobs Riggindale, fair size though not too big & spannable, good hindquarters, moved with drive from behind, free in shoulder, nice head & reach of neck;

2 Irving’s Dandyhow Beeline, moved well enough but not as tightly as 1. Has a good shape to the head & about the best feet seen here;

3 Harrison’s Iacheslei Torus.

OD (7)

1 Peacock’s Ragatam Harris, has the thickest of pelts & very good harsh coat, true otter head set on a neck with good reach, good tight thick pads to his feet, well muscled quarters, moved very well. CC & BOB;

2 Fryer’s Ch Irton Up Helly Aa, strong headed dog, narrow in front with good lay of shoulder allowing for free movement, this combined with good quarters provided drive, should be very capable of following a horse, in full, harsh, dense coat. RCC;

3 Barber’s Alcumlow Starstruck.

VD (1)

1 Hardman’s Bonusue Ozymandias, rather heavy & upright in the shoulder but moved better behind. Good skin & coat, pleasing head. Starting to show his age now.

MPB (13)

For youngsters many were too wide & there were some untypical heads.

1 Pickering’s Picer Grace Darling, nice reddish grizzle/t bitch, correct substance but not too heavy in bone, good head & neck, moved well, good topline & tailset. BP;

2 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Placebo, similar to 1 but not quite such a true otter shape to the head. Good length of body, well angulated hindquarters;

3 Reeves’ Baywillow Pacey Lacey.

PB (12,3)

1 Duxbury’s Ravenside Ma Biche, nice head, good length to the body, narrow enough & looks balanced, moved well with drive;

2 Gilpin’s Otterbobs Truant, not so good in head as 1. Good neck & forequarter, nice bend of stifle, moved well on good feet, first class coat, harsh & dense;

3 Sharp’s Dream Beauty of Rhozzum.

JB (12,3)

1 Clark’s Southash Blue Betty Boo Gameway, true bl/t with correct ticking, lovely front, pleasing head, good reach of neck, correctly placed shoulder, well angulated behind, moved true, in tip-top condition. CC;

2 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Speckles, pleasing otter shaped head, looks thicker than she is & can be easily spanned, narrow fronted & moved well, correctly textured coat;

3 Harrison’s Iacheslei Cantilena.

PGB (25,3)

1 Taylor’s Vallemoss Vera at Foxthorn, not the most feminine of bitches as she has a strong head & muzzle. Correct front, spans easily enough, has a correct thick pelt, well muscled;

2 Phillips’ Aurgwen Alyth, would this bitch be able to work? Yes, of good size, narrow enough to get to most places, good length of back, moved well;

3 Jenkins’ Glebeheath Milly The Mod at Badgerbeck.

LB (19,7)

1 Peacock’s Mickleheath Crystal by Ragatam, nothing exaggerated, well balanced, good head & length of neck, narrow in front, good feet, moved well;

2 Fryer’s Irton Polka, good head & narrow front, good thick pelt & weather resistant coat both harsh & dense, moved correctly with the hindquarters following the line of the front, many bitches were ‘crabbing’;

3 A Alyth.

OB (9,5)

1 Fraser & Butler’s Blue Tutu via Ycart, balanced, moves straight & true, strong head with good reach of neck, in the best of condition, pleasure to judge. RGC;

2 Scott’s Kilburn Chocolate Muffin, she can appear a little wide in front but is spannable, moves well having good angulation behind. Shown short of coat;

3 Williams’ Ch Hollowmoor Coremy.

VB (5)

1 South’s Borderella Emma, best headed bitch in the class, good length & shape to the ribs, moved well enough;

2 May & Whisker’s Magis Milly at Thistlestone, weaker in head than 1. Still narrow, good coat;

3 Freeman’s Borderella Elsa.
