BORDER JUDGE THREE COUNTIES 09

Border Terriers

A good turn out of quality Borders. Most Border folk know that I favour a Border that is on the leg to enable it to cover the terrain found in Border hunt country, yet narrow enough to follow the quarry to ground. Those in the cards here fulfilled most of the criteria set down in the Standard, so my individual critiques could become repetitive. True otter heads were not abundant, & those with a proper skull sometimes lacked muzzle strength. Coarse &/or upright shoulders featured too frequently, along with short &/or rounded ribcages. Not too many straight stifles were seen, but one or two were over-angulated in their hindquarters, an exaggeration which has crept into other breeds, let’s hope it will not do so in Borders. The Standard asks for a deep & narrow body, but many were deep in brisket only, with a cut-up underline. A worrying find which I have not encountered before to this extent was the number of kinky tails, not obvious to the eye but feeling lumpy to the hand. No Border appeared dirty, but the evidence appeared on my hands.

MPD

(10,3a)

1 Lowry’s Ravenside Ballymoss, 8 months gr/t in good coat & condition, handy in size. Somewhat plain in head but scored on overall balance;

2 Ward’s Brave Scooby Doo of Garw, 8 months r/gr, more on the leg than 1. Narrow & well ribbed back. More stop than desired;

3 South’s Borderella Day Tripper.

PD (19)

1 Bailey’s Grindelvald In Full Cry, 11 months g/t in excellent coat & condition, stood out on the first circuit of the ring for his ground covering & effortless movement, strong head without being overdone, good lithe body. BP;

2 Freer’s Felfree Ricardo Tubbs, nearly out of puppy classes, this b/t was well constructed with lovely shoulders, taller than most, but scored in movement over 3. Good flat skull & super front;

3 Brave Scooby Doo of G.

JD (8,1)

1 Gilpin’s Otterbobs Riggindale, g/t in full coat under which was a lithe body, beautiful head & expression, movement pleased, he could go all day, I’m sure. Good size, plenty of bone without being overdone, preferred his length of rib over 2;

2 Hunt’s Ethlencoral Pip of Ottaswell, g/t in good coat, moving accurately with a good long stride. Heavier in ear than 1 but body built on the right narrow lines;

3 Nicholls’ Halcus Annatto.

PGD (7)

1 Woolrich’s Mansergh Song Thrush, g/t whose movement impressed, narrow bodied, lovely shoulders & racy hindquarters, one of the few with a lovely otter skull;

2 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Bobby Owl, b/t, nicely balanced dog of handy size. Not so good in shoulders as 1 but liked his strong hindquarters, head & expression;

3 Cobbledick’s Laurelton Moonlight Cowboy.

LD (16,2)

1 Bean’s Brumberhill Battlecry, r/g in proper double coat, has matured well since I last judged him as a junior, excelled in shoulder & ribs, with hindquarters to match. Loved his otter head with dark eyed expression. CC. Just lost out to the BCC winner for BOB as he was not so settled on the move;

2 Barber’s Alcumlow Starstruck, close up to 1 as his movement impressed so much, he floated round the ring. As 1, narrow bodied, with racy hindquarters, lovely head. Just lost out to 1 on balance, Starstruck being taller & rangier. RCC;

3 Woolrich’s Mansergh Song Thrush.

OD (9)

1 Reeves’ Ch Baywillow Racing Blue, b/t mature dog in his prime, has not coarsened since I last judged him. Ideal for size, beautiful head & expression. Conformation as to be expected for a champion, an unexaggerated proper Border;

2 Lee’s Ch Tythrop Tapas, has grown into a lovely mature dog since I last judged him. All the essentials are there. In excellent coat & condition with good bone & front. Not quite as settled in movement as 1, nor as racy;

3 Hand’s Lutrabeck Likewise.

MPB (9,3)

1 Waldon’s Intack Blue Pearl, 7 months b/t, showing with maturity for her age, typical Border head & expression. Lacked any exaggeration. Good length of body with well angulated hindquarters;

2 Hibberd’s Bridgestone Picnic, 7 months g/t with lovely shoulders, moved well, a size smaller than 1, but perfectly balanced;

3 Milton’s Baillieswells’ Isla.

PB (11)

1 Larner’s Hawcoat Sweet Fairy, light r/g, at 11 months her maturity showed over 2. Loved her flat skull, but her muzzle is a little long. Moved well with a long accurate stride;

2 Roslin Williams’ Mansergh Speckles, light r/g with beautiful shoulders, ribs & hindquarters. Just 9 months, maturity will only complete the picture;

3 Wright’s Totherend Tonic.

JB (19,2)

1 Hand’s Lutrabeck Liberty, 12 months r/g, handy size, good shoulders & hindquarters used to advantage on the move. A very attractive youngster of great promise;

2 McPherson’s Brumberhill Bequest, dark g/t, 18 months old but less mature than 1. Lovely to go over, but I thought her loin was a bit long. Very much like her dam, my BOB, in head & movement;

3 Maltby’s Stonygin Dolly Mixture at Pherjan.

PGB (14,4)

1 Barber’s Alcumlow Starry Night, b/t looked up to size but was spannable. Good neck & shoulders, length of leg. Not so good in muzzle as her brother who won the RCC;

2 Sneddon’s Kersfell Miss Jean Brodie, b/t good size, lovely hindquarters & forehand, with elbows under the body where they should be. Bit plain in head but nice flat skull;

3 Fryer’s Irton Polka.

LB (9,1)

1 Godefroid’s Hartswelin She’s Magic, g/t mature bitch typical throughout, in proper coat, very sound movement. She won MPB under me at Richmond 06. Lovely feminine head & expression;

2 Lee’s Tythrop Traviata, good g/t with excellent conformation, just losing out to 1 on front movement;

3 Barrett’s Irton Strawberry Fair.

OB (6,2)

1 McPherson’s Ch Brumberhill Betwixt, what a surprise treat to have the opportunity of going over such a well known bitch now that she has matured, & at 7 years old, she has not coarsened although a little more matronly through the ribs since I judged her as a junior. In tip-top condition, & covering the ground effortlessly. Still excels in shoulders, topline & hindquarters, a credit to her owner. CC & BOB;

2 Jenkins’ Ch Baywillow Blue Bouquet for Badgerbeck, b/t, well constructed, lovely head. Not so positive on the move as 1 but well deserving the RCC;

3 Dickinson & James’ Stoneygin Ripon Ruby at Badgerholme.
