LAKELAND JUDGE CRUFTS 09

Lakeland Terriers

When I first heard of the numbers of dogs entered of this breed, I did not quite believe it! When was the last time we had the chance to see 42 Lakelands in one day? I certainly cannot remember & it is a real tragedy that this breed is on the endangered species list, as it is a great breed to live with.
Thanks to you all for giving me this opportunity, & I was certainly looking forward to this appointment with great hopes & excitement.
I have had the privilege of showing a few Lakeland Terriers & also had some success with both Wires & Welsh T. I think it is important to know all these three breeds well to be able to properly judge any of them.
I was also lucky enough to get involved with terriers at a time when there were still a number of staunch supporters of this breed. Breeders as well as handlers. Hopefully I learnt something from them.
After my judging at Crufts, several people asked me to explain the difference between these breeds.
Welsh & Wires are variations over the same theme while the Lakeland is very, very different, which is probably because it was custom made for hunting in the Lake district with its very own topography.
He shall be smaller & not so ultra short as the other two breeds, not have as much spring of rib. Because he is slightly longer, he must have a slightly longer neck to balance the picture. Because he is longer & smaller, he appears shorter on the leg, although must not appear short-legged.
So important, the head proportions, must be right. A dog with a foreface longer than the skull immediately loses type & can not get the right expression. Ear placement wider apart than Wires & Welsh, although not low set with a thickness of the ear in between that of the other breeds. Even eyes wider apart & the expression as a result of all this completely different.
If you cut out the silhouette of a good Lakeland, there is no way he could be mistaken for any of the other breeds.
The coat is also very different. This varies with different colours but the typical Lakeland coat is thicker, with more wool than the other breeds. Probably also planned as protection against injury from weather, rocks & gorse.
The reason I want to express my opinion is that in the ring I had a number of multi-titled dogs who were excellent terriers but not particularly typy Lakeland Terriers.
Unfortunately this is the case with other terrier breeds as well. Probably the price we have to pay for the lack of the influential & ‘controlling’ breeders of the past.
I think the addition to the Standard regarding health & function is excellent & hope that future judges of all breeds will remember that dogs should be constructed & have the temperament to do the work they were originally designed for

VD (1)

1 Johnston’s Ch Oregill Buccaneer, 7 years, excellent type & size, typical head. Ear a little unsettled. Coat & presentation OK, good bone, moved & showed well, lots to like about him, a lovely temperament.

JD (3)

1 RCC, Manser & English’s Nujax My Way, very attractive young dog, has a lovely head with well placed & well carried ears, excellent neck, back fairly short with a good tailset, moved & showed well. Would like more body coat but what was there was of good texture. A little wide in front, but matched the CC winner well for type, size & outline;

2 Matti & Omitogun’s Louieville Red King in Frontline, this dog has a fair head, ears on the heavy side. Coat of good texture but could be made to look better. OK body, good tailset. Moved a little erratic in front, but did not co-operate with his handler on the move. Quite an attractive dog who with more training & routine can be made to look much better;

3 Jones’ Glentop’s Blaize A Trail to Mikeland.

PGD (2,1a)

1 Dunn’s Fallada Iron Man, alone, a dog of average quality, typical head & expression, good ear. Would like more body & stronger hindquarters. Coat of good texture but more coat would improve the overall picture.

LD (3)

1 Kenyon’s Wyndam Blackjack, masculine dog of pleasing type but would like a better, cleaner head. Ears OK but has a good length of neck, good front & strong hindquarters, in good coat & condition;

2 Pearce’s Dezrez Freedom Fighter of Demorner, pleasing type, typical head proportions but ears need to settle, would like more neck & a better front. OK body & good tailset but would like stronger hindquarters. His coat was far from show condition which of course does not improve the overall picture;

3 F Iron Man.

OD (7)

1 CC, Johnston’s Ch Louieville Red Prince, this dog caught my eye the moment he set foot in the ring. Lovely type, super head with clean skull & a perfect profile, excellent ear carriage & a typical expression, he makes a grand picture going round the ring, carries himself so well & moves so freely, OK length of neck & well angulated upper arm. Would like more laid back & finer shoulders. His hindquarters are well angulated but I would like more width across the loin. So well presented without a hair out of place but more body coat would make him look even better. A lovely dog who seems to do anything his handler asks of him;

2 Munter & Uiterwijk’s Fire Flame van Foliny Home, another red dog in great condition, bigger & a different type to 1. Has a nice head, excellent neck, good body. Not the precision of movement of 1 but altogether a lovely dog;

3 Greenway’s Ch Firecracker at Rayfos, a dog of excellent type & proportions. Balanced head, but would like a cleaner skull. Good expression, good length of neck with a good body & excellent tailset. Moved freely but just seemed to lack interest.

GCD (0).

VB (1)

1 Boyd’s Rimsand Rural Rudix, 10 years & of average quality. Not in show form but seemed to enjoy her time in the ring, so well handled by her very young & very charming handler.

PB (2)

1 Connell’s Stanstead Try This One, very typical bitch who has lots to like about her, well made, balanced head with good ears. Still very immature on the move. In good coat & condition. Will only improve with time;

2 Johnston’s Oregill Black Pearl, very cute & feminine black bitch who has a very feminine head & expression, ears need to settle. Liked her silhouette & outline but she needs more body to complete the picture. Would like to see her in a year’s time with more routine as her behaviour made it impossible to properly assess her movement.

JB (3)

1 McCallum’s Glentops Butterfly Kisses, very typy & attractive young lady, balanced head but skull too deep in profile, would like more neck. Excellent body & bone, good coat texture but not really in top show condition. Moved & showed well, lovely temperament;

2 Evans’ Saredon Picture This, nice type with a pleasing head, ears on the heavy side, OK neck but would like more layback of shoulders. In good coat & condition. Standing looks well but would like more enthusiasm going round the ring. Has a lot to like about her, just has to show it off to her best advantage;

3 Anderson’s Corrievackie Opal, quite a nice type, fair head but would like a cleaner skull & better ear carriage. Moved quite well. Very feminine girl who was in good form & has a lovely temperament.

PGB (9)

1 Connell’s Sonorra Bewitched, this is a very typical & attractive bitch, good head but could use her ears better. Lovely size & a very balanced outline. Could move & showed off her many virtues with more temperament, but still a very nice bitch;

2 De Munter, Uiterwijk & Beerten’s Scafell Pike’s Ginger, lovely terrier, nice head, long neck, good body, normal angulation. She looked very young & rangy going round the ring. Her movement was rather slack & uninspired, but I am sure she has better days when she looks completely different. Good coat;

3 Thompson’s Brocolitia Follow On, bitch of average quality, pleasing head, ears a little heavy, OK length of neck, good body, coat of good texture. Not an eyecatcher but surely has things to like about her.

LB (9)

1 De Munter& Uiterwijk’s Fire Witch van Foliny Home, lovely bitch who has a striking outline, excellent head with good eyes, ears & expression. Standing looks a picture but in the challenge would not settle to move properly which I am sure she can. Could carry a bit more weight to advantage but in excellent coat & condition;

2 Kenyon’s Wyndam Witchcraft, bitch of excellent type, not the sharp outline of 1, but she has that sound, old fashioned look about her. Moved & showed well but would like more temperament;

3 Connell’s Stanstead Take A Chance On Me, black of lovely type & has a great outline, moved & showed well, has a good coat. Still looking rather immature, a little more coat, body & substance would greatly improve the overall picture.

OB (5,2)

1 CC & BOB, Averis & Scawthorn’s Ch Saredon For Your Eyes Only, the star of the day in my ring, lovely bitch from all angles, lovely head, good ears, eyes & expression, excellent neck, topline & tailset, clean front & strong, well angulated hindquarters, moved & showed well, in perfect coat & condition. Good to see her shortlisted in the group where she looked & performed so well;

2 RCC, Greenway’s Ch Rayfos Night Shadow, another bitch of quality, so sound & well built, balanced head with excellent ears & expression, balanced neck & correct length of back, moved freely round the ring & so well coming & going, liked her lots;

3 Anai’s Int Ch Killiecampbell, bigger bitch who is a lovely terrier. Would like a finer head. Has a lovely temperament, in good coat & condition, long neck, good body & excellent bone. To me she is just too big to fit into the ‘type frame’ but a very attractive terrier. Well handled & presented.

GCB (1)

1 Chamness’ Kelda Matilda, this girl was unplaced in PGB but quite a nice, pleasant bitch. Ears a little untidy but a balanced head, excellent coat & condition. Altogether of average quality, but still a typical Lakeland. Surprised to see this old prefix in new hands. Brings back memories of so many Kelda’s of the past.
