STAFFORDSHIRE BULL CRUFTS 09 STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER Judge(s): Mr Mansel James Frayne (B) BITCHES – What can I say, except that to have judged the breed I love, at the biggest & best show in the world, was awe-inspiring, the pity being it was at the expense of a good friend of mine, Brian Owen, who because of illness had to step down & I was asked to step in. I was down to judge in 2010 so I was the obvious choice. I wish Brian a speedy recovery & pray that it won’t be long before he does his own Crufts. V (12) 1 Williams’ Ch Eclypstaff Sheza Truble, what can I say except ‘wow’. The first class & the oldest bitches at the show & you are confronted by something really special, a real beautiful b/br bitch with well shaped but feminine head, neat rose ears, well defined cheek bumps, nice round dark eye, strong neck, nice straight front, good barrel of rib, well tucked up waistline, correct bend of stifle, level topline finished off with neat tail, moved OK. At 7 years of age a credit to the breed, her owners & her handler, so it’s ‘wow’ again; 2 Clewley’s Araidh Sweetest Taboo, lovely light tiger brindle with a lot of grey which is not unexpected for her age which at 13½ is amazing. Absolutely stunning, handled herself like a puppy & it was an honour to have judged her. Nice shaped head, neatest of ears, dark eye, lovely expression, well off for bone, in top class condition. The owners must be congratulated for keeping this old timer in the good nik she was in & on top of that she moved OK. Really chuffed with this one; 3 O’Connor’s Bearcrest En Vogue at Chezatree, very nice b/w pied with substance, nice head, correct ear balance, nice round eye, well off for bone, nice strong barrel of rib, neat waist, strong backend finished off with neat pump handled tail, moved OK. P (16,1a) 1 Francis & Hillman’s Samtan Forget Me Not, the heading of this class is Special Puppy & I was soon to find out why. This b/br with nice white marking on the chest was something special, with all the things I like in Stafford bitches, all that a Stafford should be but with that little bit extra. Truly lovely shaped head, nice pronounced cheek bumps, lovely dark round eye, very neat rose button ears, good stop, nice mouth & no way could this one be mistaken fro a dog, very feminine, nice body outline, well tucked up, nice straight front, correct drop of brisket, correct shape to hindquarters, neat pump handled tail, moved nicely. Deserved her BP: 2 Grimwood’s Stormstaff Milly Moonbeam, predominantly white, I suspect the fittest bitch on parade today. I find that you need to look at a white, then go away & come back & look again. There are things you can miss out on such as the stop & other cheek muscles which don’t seem so pronounced on a white head until close inspection reveals that they are. This one had all of these good points in abundance with a very dark eye, with none of the pink you tend to get around the lids. Nice shaped skull, neat ears, good body outline, showing a lot of ribs, no body fat showing, in fact rippling with muscle, some would say a bit overdone, but she will do for me. She was really tucked up at waist, really, good bend to stifle & moved OK. All fired up was this one; 3 Davies’ Mitzstaff Summer Chaos, nice b/br, small white flash on chest, nice shaped headpiece, small rose ears, nice pronounced stop, nice dark eye, nice shaped cheek bumps, while remaining feminine nice body outline & very short coupled, nice drop to her brisket, small waistline, nice bend to stifle, neat tail & moved OK. She finished off a nice trio of first class bitch puppies. J (21,1) Some really nice juniors in this class. 1 Jackson & Whitehouse’s Bourtie Wot A Steal, the ring presence of this b/br with a small touch of white was unbelievable. She stood out in the line-up like a beauty queen & really looked the part. There must be a good future for this lovely bitch, beautiful head, well pronounced cheek bumps, nice round dark eye, well defined stop without losing her bitchiness, good mouth, strong neck on strong shoulders, powerful front, straight legs, nice barrel of rib, well tucked up, powerful backend, good bend to stifle, correct tail placement, moved OK. First class bitch; 2 Pearce’s Tigerbull Nessun Dorma, nice b/br with white, all the attributes of 1, nice head shape, dark eye, nice rose ears, good pronounced stop, correct length of muzzle, nice front, nice drop of brisket, nice shaped backend, narrow waistline, nice level top while standing & on the move, neat pump handled tail, moved OK. Lovely type, neat head, correct ear balance, nice expression, of the feminine type I like, nice dark eye, good mouth, correct front, straight front, nice level topline, good drop to brisket, soundly constructed, well tucked up, neat tail, moved a treat, handled well. Earned her class win; 2 Craig & Gronow’s Castlearl Dynamite Diva, it is a pleasure to turn from the steward’s table & find some of the best bitches in the country & overseas standing around the ringside & today I was spoilt for choice, all the classes so far have excited me including this one. Nice b/br with a dash of white, nice skull shape, nice cheek bumps, correct eye colour & shape, neat ears, good mouth, nice body shape including nice drop of brisket, good tuck up at waistline, nice angulation to stifle, level topline, neat & tidy in most departments, moved OK; 3 Gent & Jackson’s Advocates Kween Of The Ring, once again I utter the words ‘nice b/br’. It will get monotonous to the reader but in reality it is the truth, the majority of bitches in front of me today were b/br & in truth were among the best around. This one was no exception, nice type, neatest of ears, nice round eye, good shape head, nice front, nice barrel of rib on display, nice tuck-up, correct tail shape, moved OK. UG (18,2) 1 Jasper’s Colliermans Destiny, at last I can utter the words ‘nice red’. I was beginning to think there were no more on the planet but I was proved wrong. Very nice red, super skull shape, neatest of ears, nice round dark eye, in relation to coat colour, strong muzzle, nice correct bite, straight front, nice bitch, good drop of brisket, well tucked up waistline, correct bend to stifle, neat tail, very nice outline, moved soundly. This bitch went on to be first in the GCB class, well deserved. PG (16,6) 1 Cofrey’s Aboriginal Black Magic, flashy b/br, out of the top drawer, very feminine without losing any of her Stafford attributes, very nice headpiece, neat rose ears, nice cheek bumps, really well balanced with attitude, nice short coupled, well tucked up waist, good bend to stifle, good front & moved OK. I am really enjoying the judging at this point, this is great (I think I’m in heaven); 2 Beard’s Hasweth Crazy Jayne, b/r with dash of white, all the same attributes as winner, really nice example of the type I like, really had to split them but it must be done so little between my three placements in this class. Neat head, good set of rose ears, deep pronounced stop, correct sized muzzle, nice round dark eye, strong straight front, well tucked up, good angulation to stifle, nice level top finished with neat tail, moved & handled OK; 3 Gray’s Bullmaple Touchstone, b/br made up a terrific trio in this class, they keep coming into the ring, I suspect that there is someone out there with a silicon mould churning out the good ones (dream on) but the truth is that good breeding is the secret. Loved this one, very feminine, nice head shape, well defined cheek bumps, good stop, strong muzzle, good bite, good outline, nice barrel of rib, neat waistline, good bend to stifle, finished off with the much romanticised pump handled tail, moved OK. Very nice skull, set off with nice neat rose ears, plenty of stop, correct muzzle length, nice round dark eye, powerful neck set on strong shoulders, well off for bone displaying an ample barrel of rib, tapering back to nice well tucked waistline, nicely muscled hindquarters, complete with nice level topline & neat tail placement. First class bitch; 2 Augustynowicz’s Ramblestaff On The Rampage for Toroloco, nice white bitch, following my rule of have a good look at a white then go away, come back & look again because you can miss so much of a white. So I had a good look & liked what I saw. Very fit without a trace of fat, nice shaped headpiece, neat ears, good bite, nice round eye, well muscled up, good strong front, nice straight legs, good drop of brisket, nice slim waistline, plenty of bend to stifle, finished off with neat tail carriage, moved very nice. Deserved this placing; 3 Manito’s Dynastaff Miss Complex, b/br who took my eye & I am sure she will be swapping places with each of the other two.
