STAFFORDSHIRE BULL CRUFTS 09 STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER Judge(s): Mr A Broadstock (D) Staffordshire Bull Terriers DOGS – It is a tremendous honour to be invited to judge at Crufts – the biggest & best dog show in the world – & I would like to thank all the exhibitors who showed under me. I started off with a clean sheet, not having seen any of these dogs previously as I haven’t attended any shows in the last few years. The standard of the dogs was excellent, they were all shown in gleaming condition & their handlers all complimented them, as one they were all dressed for the occasion. Both my CC & RCC winners were well in the Standard. I think some people forget that this breed is called Staffordshire Bull Terrier & I can’t understand why my CC & BOB had not gained his title before this day as he fitted the Standard to perfection. I must also compliment the French lady, to whom I give a first for the best hat worn in my ring on the day. I thought I was at Ascot for a time! Many thanks also to my two very proficient stewards who were a great help to me throughout the day. V (14,3a) 1 Blacker’s Ch Valglo Casanova at Crossguns, the class of this 9 year old mahogany/br shone through, still looking the part as a ch, moved & handled very well; 2 Connelly’s Ch Waystaff Dutch Courage, this 8 years pied pushed hard for first place. Shown in hard condition, moved & handled well; 3 Smart’s Bullmitz Bon Jovi, 8 years quality pied I have admired from a youngster, shown in hard condition, moved & handled well. P (10) 1 Thomas’ Ashbull O’Leary at Samtan, brindle youngster, caught my eye straight away, well balanced, his body matched his head, shown in very fit condition, moved & handled well. a worthy first in a strong class; 2 Evans’ Kalhol Dark Maruda, dark brindle, well in the Standard, balanced overall, a very fit specimen, shown in good condition, moved & handled well; 3 Powell’s Ironbrays Maximus Claudius, balanced b/br, not overdone, shown in gleaming condition, moved & handled well. J (20,2) 1 Jones & Whelan’s Maxsta Hot Shot, balanced dark brindle, well in the Standard with no exaggerations, shown in good condition, moved & handled well. Both owner & dog complemented each other; 2 Beaufoy’s Wyrefare The Governor, red with white, shown by a well known exhibitor, well bodied, excellent pigmentation, superb front. Should mature into a very classy dog. Challenged for BPD. Moved & handled well; 3 Tittley & Bosanko’s Willowstaff New Addition at Garstaff, balanced dark brindle, well in the Standard, well in contention with the first two placings, an excellent blend of bull & terrier, moved & handled well. Y (20) 1 Muir & Quinn’s Sherdrew Born To Perform at Maratana, upstanding b/br, good front with some substance, head matches his body which made him a well balanced specimen, shown in excellent coat & condition, moved & handled well; 2 Stanway’s Waystaff Strikes Back, this pied pushed 1 very hard in this strong class. Good pigmentation, balanced & well muscled, his time will come. This lady always shows & handles to perfection. Moved well; 3 Matznerova’s Dream Tymy Fransimo Bohemia, b/br with white, balanced dog, shown in gleaming condition, good head & body, balanced, moved & handled well. UG (19,2) 1 Borstal & Sullivan’s Prince’s Black Beauty, dark brindle, shown in excellent condition, well balanced, head I liked very much, not overlarge, good angulation, moved with drive & handled very well; 2 Simmons’ Chezatree Warcloud, pied, full of life, balanced, good pigmentation, fitted into the Standard, good length of leg, moved & handled very well; 3 Langford’s Advocates The Guvnor for Valenzo, b/br, sound in all quarters, moved & handled well. These three made a nice trio as winners of this class. G (24) 1 Miskelly’s Loyalstaff Cregagh’s Best, well balanced dark brindle, up on his toes, quality head. I am sure this dog will make his mark in the future. Moved with drive & handled well; 2 Watkins’ Veklorra Flaming Arrow, dark brindle, excellent conformation with head similar to 1, sure to make his mark in the future, good topline on the move, handled well; 3 A O’Leary at S, a surprise to see him in this class but he held his own very well. When he matures he should compete well for honours. Well handled. PG (20,2) 1 Murray’s Stailon Tartan Chieftan, quality dark brindle, well balanced, good in all quarters, caught my eye. One I am confident will make it to the top. Handled to perfection; 2 Greenlee’s Louabil By Design, balanced br/w, standard dog, I liked his head, showed up well in a very strong class & moved very well from behind, well handled; 3 Gallagher & Johnson’s Longdrive Blue Kentucky, br/w, balanced, good front, classic head, shown in gleaming condition, moved & handled well. It is so good to see quality pieds back on the scene. Good pigmentation, well in the Standard, moved & handled well. O (31,3) 1 Scanlan’s Mountaboo Seasoned Man at Pantycelyn, what a very strong class to win. Dark brindle balanced dog, excellent example of a blend of bull & terrier, not overdone in any quarter, moved with drive. I was pleased to have the honour of making him a ch on the day. In my opinion he should have gained his title sooner than this. Dog & owner complemented each other. CC; 2 Wray & Hedges’ Leger Carrion Showing, b/br, well balanced quality dog, pushed 1 hard on the day. I am sure his title is not far off, moved & expertly handled. RCC; 3 Edwards’ Welshstaff Pearly Jack, well balanced b/br, what a cracking trio this line up made. Yet another waiting for his title which I am sure he’ll obtain in the future. Moved well, shown in gleaming condition & handled very well. GC (6,1) This class came at the end of a very tiring day & I appreciated that all the exhibitors in this class shook my hand at the end of judging. They are all doing a grand job for the GC Scheme. Unfortunately I have mislaid my notes for this class. I can only apologise to everyone for this omission. 1 Fairhurst’s Farlenium Eye Of The Storm; 2 Morrell’s Niatona The Boy Wonder; 3 Fairhurst’s Yorks One Time for Farlenium. ALAN BROADSTOCK
