AUSTRALIAN JUDGE CRUFTS 17

Australian Terriers

This was the second time I had judged the breed at Crufts, the first time having been in 1980. The entry on this occasion was 23, interestingly about eight less than in 1980 – but I am sure that though the quantity was less the overall quality of the entry was better. Fronts still need a bit of attention though in my view are much better overall than they used to be. There were no entries in the lower dog classes so the first class with entries was LD.

JD & VD (0).

LD (4)

1 Willmett’s Wilfnbell Midnight Cowboy, very pleasing in head & length of neck. Good topline. Moved better behind than 2. Good length of back & body. Showed extremely well. Very pleasing in coat but colour could perhaps be clearer;

2 Coppee & Siversson’s Mongrel’s Hardy, again good in length of neck body & moved OK in front but not as positive behind as 1. Good rib & loin. Very pleasing in head;

3 Skelton’s Spitewinter Ooh Ah Henry, a very good headed dog with correct skull. Good coat. Could be a bit longer in body but moved OK in front & behind. Scord for coat over the Reserve in this class.

OD (5)

1 McCourt, Eardley & O’Reilly’s Ch Silhill Red Crackle, a very showy dog. Good size & not by any means too big. Very good in neck with enough arch there. Good bone. OK in skull & muzzle but could be better in eye. Well muscled behind & very good in front. Moved well both in front & behind. Presented a very typical outline & went on to win the CC & BOB;

2 Mitchell’s Fr Ch Blueboomerang’s Inky-Dinky, a biggish dog & not presented to best advantage but despite that a smart dog all the same. Coat of really good texture. He moved out jauntily, well & with good drive behind. Excellent head, good bone & correct feet. Very well muscled behind. Pity he is so big;

3 McCourt, Eardley & O’Reilly’s Ch Silhill Barney Rubble, very pleasing for length of body. Moved out well & good topline. Head furnishings not at their best which spoiled expression. Good ears & very good in neck length & shape.

VB (1)

1 Jones’ Wyeafon Fair Dinkum, a neat little bitch of good size. Coat could be harsher. But she was very good in head & expression with good muzzle to skull proportions. Good tailset & topline. Well; muscled. Coat needs a bit more substance to complete the picture.

JB (2)

1 McCourt & Eardley’s Silhill The Sequel, rather bigger than 2, but really good in coat, excellent head & expression. Good ears & good neck. Correct set on of tail. Enough bone. Moved very slightly better in front than;

2 Nottingham & Dunbar’s Silhill Lily, better size than 1 who is I see her litter sister, again pleasing in head & length all round. Coat not at its best today but moved particularly well behind. Not overdone for size & if in better coat could have scored over 1.

PGB (3,1)

1 Nottingham & Dunbar’s Silhill Pops, better coated than 2 & though could move better in front, she moved well behind & was excellent for size & proportions. Good level topline & correct length & shape of neck. Pleasing head & expression. Good skull & OK in eye. Scored for confidence of temperament over;

2 Whitehouse’s Silhill Nuts In May, another with plenty of length but not quite the topline of 1 & a bit softer in coat. Needs a bit more training to gain more confidence on the table. But moved out well & indeed slightly better in front than 1.

LB (2,1)

1 Foskett, Tyrrell & Freer’s Wilfnbell Red G’day Sheela, stood alone – a biggish bitch but could do with just a shade more neck. Could be in better coat bit moved rather better behind than in front where she was a shade untidy. Good bone & correct length of muzzle & skull. OK in eye & good bend of stifle. Could carry a bit less weight to complete the picture.

OB (4) 1 Foskett, Tyrrell & Freer’s Ch Silhill Stelata, scored in many ways. Very pleasing in head, good ears, good neck & topline. Scored there over 2. Pleasing in tailset. Not overdone in rib. OK in bone with good tight feet. Has a great deal of character about her & moved out with the springy gait expected of the breed. She could be better in front movement & though she won the BCC, when it came to BOB she wasn’t as good in front as the dog;

2 McCourt’s Ch Silhill Royal Blue, somewhat better in front movement than 1 but not quite the length or proportions of 1 & not as strong in muzzle. Good in front & in hindquarters. Scored in front over 3. Went in to win RCC;

3 Jones’ Wilfnbell Girl On Fire via Wyeafon, not in as good coat as 1 & 2 but very good in head, eye & expression. Good length of neck. Pleasing in hindquarters & moved well there but not as good as 2 in front.

GCB (2)

1 Freer’s Silhill Rock Chick with Wilfnbell, handled well by probably the youngest handler at Crufts. Shown a bit overweight but very good in head with correct length of skull & muzzle. Good outline, enough neck & good bone. Went around the ring very well;

2 Cox’s Spitewinter Causing Chaos at Petitpaws, a much older bitch & was lacking somewhat in coat but at nearly fourteen years she was in pretty good fettle for her age. Could do with a bit more bone.
