Australian Terriers

I was delighted with my entry, both in numbers & in quality, & I was further delighted with the fact I had no absentees on the day; many thanks to my fellow exhibitors. It was lovely to see some promising puppies.

I have just one comment to make about the breed I have given the past 44 years of my life to & which I care passionately about & that is that we must pay attention to size as this has really crept up in the last decade. As breeders & custodians of our breed we must always remember that the Breed Standard for our breed clearly states that the Australian Terrier should be "about 10 inches” which means our breed should be one of the smallest of all the terrier breeds. Please bear in mind each additional inch constitutes a 10% increase in size which is a great deal in a breed that is meant to be "about 10 inches”.

PD (2)

1 Stoddart’s Millvalley Blue Lord Derby, masculine, well made 9 months dog, pleased in mouth & reach of neck, decent front, level topline & strong loin, well turned hindquarters, sound & moved very well;

2 Leeson’s Larry Guy vom Rindbach, very raw 6 months b/t whose tan is a lovely rich colour, in good coat & condition, good body properties, his front is OK & he was quite sound on the move. For my personal preference I would like to see him with a little more turn of stifle.

JD (1)

1 Leeson’s Amberush Walking On Sunshine, 18 months on the day, masculine head, good ears, his front is fine & he has lovely hindquarters which he used to advantage to move soundly & well.

OD (2)

Two quality exhibits who gave me much food for thought. It was a very close decision between these two excellent males.

1 Seaton’s Gr Ch Temora Ri Diercc, 3 years red who is superbly constructed throughout, level topline, correct tailset, a beautifully balanced dog who moves with the correct free, springy action which is so typical Australian Terrier. I awarded his sire the CC the last time I judged our breed & I must say he is very like his sire. Like Red Rufus, he is altogether a very smart dog who was expertly handled & presented. CC & BOB;

2 Skelton’s Ch Millvalley Scotch Mist, whose size I actually prefer to that of the winner. Also 3 years, is b/t with a lovely masculine head, good mouth & great reach of neck. He too is superbly put together, has a spirit-level topline & excellent hindquarters which he really used to great advantage to move soundly & extremely well & to top it all he was shown in fit & hard condition. RCC.

PB (1)

1 Skelton & Stoddart’s Millvalley Blue Persimmon, 9 months whose type & quality impressed me the moment I saw her. Ultra feminine with the loveliest head & expression, pleasing neck & front, level topline, excellent hindquarters which she really used to produce sound, ground-covering movement. In the challenge she immediately caught my eye & I was delighted to award her her 1st CC. BP.

JB (4)

1 Leeson’s Amberush Quick As A Flash, lovely head, eye & expression, pleased in front, level topline, had the best hindquarters in this class, very well bodied & very sound on the move;

2 Leeson’s Armirelli Evergreen Lady, pleased in head, eye & expression, moved out soundly & smartly;

3 Stoddart’s Jumpers Highness of Millvalley.

LB (1)

1 Leeson’s Armirelli Secret Code, she’s 3½ years b/t with good strength of muzzle & a leather nose which is one of the features that sets our breed apart from all others. Sadly, this is a trait in our breed that is rarely seen nowadays. A very attractive bitch who pleased me in front, level topline, good tailset, lovely hindquarters, sound & moved well. Better presentation would have enhanced the overall picture.

OB (1)

1 Stoddart’s Temora’s Photo Finish, dam of the CC-winning puppy bitch. A feminine 3 years b/t, attractive head with flat skull & correct earset, excellent reach of neck, decent front, lovely hindquarters, moved soundly, particularly behind; altogether a very appealing bitch who, on the day, just had to give way to her daughter. RCC.
