BEDLINGTON JUDGE WELKS 23

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge the Bedlington Terriers at their 2023 Show, and for their excellent hospitality. Thanks also to my very helpful stewards who kept the ring running smoothly. It is several years since I last judged the breed and there have been some changes, There has been an increase in liver and sandy coloured dogs and coat texture has improved together with presentation. All coats were within the colour range and of equal merit as stated in the breed standard. There were no black or white coats. I found no bad mouths and all dogs present had good feet but size is still a problem, a number of the dogs and some bitches were up to size. The Breed Standard quote “Height: about 41 cms (16 ins) at withers. This allows for slight variation below in the case of a bitch and above in the case of a dog.” Tail carriage spoilt a number of dogs when moving, particularly, in profile. Top lines varied as usual and a few were upright in shoulder. Heads were one of the major problems, a number were rather small with small teeth. A bedlington should be fit for purpose i.e. killing vermin and supplying food for the pot so requires a strong jaw. A number appeared to be well balanced but were shallow in brisket which was disguised by a curtain of coat under the body. Some bitches were overweight and others were lacking in body. I am sorry I had to keep my coat on while judging but I was very cold.

MPD (1)

1 Lacey’s Bowlingbrook Hummingbird - 8 month old well coated blue, good for size with good head, mouth, ears and eyes, presented a well balanced picture. Moved well for one so young with good tail carriage, BPD, pushed hard for BP.

JD (3)

1 Martin’s Honeymist Firecracker - Up to size liver but very sound with strong head, good front and body, very good coat for texture for age. Well balanced, Moved better today, than I have seen him do previously. Seriously considered for the RCC.

2 Bannister’s Miteymidgets Modern Love - Dark blue of correct size, well presented, but moved slightly wide in front and close behind.

3 Long’s Travellersway Godwin.

YD (1)

1 Zanelli’s Agnellino Midnight Runner Del Tintalora - Another up to size liver, well coated but a little soft. Very good head, mouth, eyes and ears. Moved a little close behind but had good tail carriage.

PGD (1)

1 Poultney’s Jobanker Rocky Road - Another liver, but better for size with good coat texture. Front, head and ears all good. Moved OK from front but a little close behind. Tail a little short.

LD (4)

1 Godden’s Ozbreeze Surprize of the Day - A correctly sized blue boy with very good coloured and textured coat, which was very well presented. Correct topline which he kept as he moved confidently round the ring. Pleased to award DCC Just preferred the bitch in the challenge, very close decision.

2 Ross & Creggan’s Major Tufts at Mactufts - Another correctly sized blue dog, not quite the coat texture of 1, but still a well made bedlington without exaggeration, moved well.

3 Moore & Chudleigh’s BedlishesValiant Knight at Devleigh.

OD (3)

1 Kinns’ Kinnuva Dark Sleekstar - Another liver boy, well balanced with coat of good colour and texture, lovely size, all in proportion and moved well. A well deserved RCC.

2 Middlebrook’s Ch Tcheria Tcharleston - Another blue who was OK for size. He did not appear to be happy in the ring today, spoiling his topline and movement. A well deserved Champion.

3 Tonner & Oxbury’s Tunman Full Throttle at Jukenblu.

VB (1)

1 Tonner & Oxbury’s Miteymidgets Nations Unite at Jukenblu -A 9 year old blue with darker coat who was OK for size, would have preferred truer front movement. BV.

PB (1)

1 Harris & Cleaver’s Ratzwell Jolly Jubilee - First saw this blue 8 month old, as a very raw puppy in February and she has blossomed and now shows a more balanced picture. She moved well for one so young, BPB & BPIB, pleased to see her short listed in the Puppy Group.

JB (3,1)

1 Lee’s Angellino’s Faith no more at Corderito - Another liver of good size, well balanced without exaggeration and moved OK.

2 Mitchell’s Paceypaws Philippa - A smaller blue who was difficult to assess as she would not keep still, also difficult to assess movement.

YB (2,1)

1 Zanelli’s Silverkin Sparkle of Hope del Tintalora - Another blue of correct size, colour and texture of coat OK. Good front and rear angulation but moved a little close behind.
PGB (5)

1 Ross & Creggans’ Mactufts Nanny Macphee - This liver bitch caught my eye last summer for her lovely size and outline on the move but seemed to lose out on presentation. She is very well made without exaggeration and with improved presentation she presented a well balanced picture. Pleased to award her the BCC and BOB and pleased to see her go well in the group ring. I evidently made one of her owners very happy as the day was her Birthday.

2 Lacey’s Bowlingbrook Tumblyweed - A good coloured and coated blue, well balanced and moved well, seriously considered for RCC.

3 Martin Impey’s Silverkin Whittlesbach Gem.

LB (8,1)

1 Martin’s Honeymist Crazy Dreamz - A well proportioned, lovely sized dark blue, very good shape which she held on the move. She moved very confidently. Pleased to award her the RCC.

2 Ross & Creggans’ Mactufts Kindred Spirit - Similar sized blue who again was well balanced without exaggeration and moved well.

3 Harris & Cleaver’s Jobanker Virtuous Veronica.

OB (3)

A difficult class of three very different blue Champion bitches.

1 Moore & Chudleigh’s Ch Devleigh - Another of correct size and well proportioned, she is well made and moved very well, just lost out for RCC.

2 McNally’s Ch Conekesheved Too Shy - Beautifully presented blue bitch, who I remember as an eye catching puppy, but just too big for the ‘breed standard’.

3 Bishop’s Ch Chaselyne About Thyme
