BORDER JUDGE BLACKPOOL 16

Border Terriers

My first CC appointment & a big thank you is due to the officers & committee of Blackpool & district canine society for allowing me the honour to judge at your show.

It was an immensely satisfying day judging a quality entry of Border terriers.

I found size in general to be excellent with only a couple who were too large that I couldn’t span. Mouths were all acceptable, with just a few who had teeth out of line. All Males were entire.

Coats were a problem, not on my main winners I hasten to add, & a good few exhibits were brought out too early in the coat department. Some judges may overlook this very important part of the breed standard but I certainly couldn’t. Upholding the maxim “essentially a working terrier”, a good double weather protective coat is a must!

I was thrilled when I stood back & looked at my DCC & BCC when they came in to challenge for best of breed, I thought they were very similar for type & stamp. A very pleasing & humbling conclusion to judging the dogs & bitches. Best of breed went to the bitch in a very close challenge; simply it was her head & expression that won me over.

Thank you to each & every exhibitor for bringing your dogs under me & accepting my decisions with grace.

V (5,1a)

1 Baxter’s Int/Am/Can Ch Sulan Fancy That, grizzle bitch with balanced outline, in excellent coat & condition, good size with easy span topline & tailset correct, narrow throughout, good angles front & rear, moved best in class. BV;

2 South’s Borderella Day Tripper, handsome grizzle male who has a super hard tight coat & thick pelt, narrow throughout, wonderful head, topline & tailset correct, out moved by winner.

MPD (2)

1 Broomhead’s Bardenfox A View To Kill, charming puppy just 6 months, lovely size, liked his head & expression, lacking in coat today, super topline, good length to body, moved out well, promising puppy;

2 Read’s Roxambor Space Invader, bl/t, taller dog & not so developed in head yet as winner. He is narrow & has a good length of body. Should come together well.

PD (4,1)

1 Woollacott’s Tufterslodge Tea For Two, grizzle who was quite together & presented a very pleasing outline stood & moving, excellent showman who enjoyed his job, good head with dark eye & neat ears, easily spanned body with tight harsh dense coat & thick pelt, correct topline & well set thick short tail. moved out well BPD;

2 Baxter’s Mysulan Going Solo, bl/t, lovely headed dog of a good size, another with a very good outline, close up to winner but coat not the quality of 1st today.

JD (11,1)

1 Duxbury’s Ridgebow Tracker, handy sized red who was very much on form today, presented new tight harsh coat, scored very much in head & expression for me, darkest eyes with excellent neat ears, well angulated front & rear, very on his toes & moved soundly with purpose. Stood & moving he kept his lovely outline with his thick short tail carried off his back, super little dog who in the challenge still shone enough for the RCC;

2 Johnson’s Karison Kosta, grizzle who I also liked immensely for type, a size larger than winner but still easily spannable, narrow dog with good length of body, very good head, he also had a perfect harsh dense coat & thick pelt, like the winner he was also on his toes, was a very close decision here,2 very nice young dogs who gave me a hard time deciding.

GD (7,1)

1 Haughton’s Chorbeck Chatty Man, light grizzle 3rd in a strong junior class, good headed dog, liked him for size & length of body, gave a lovely balanced outline stood & moving, moved with drive & accuracy. Smart youngster;

2 Golding’s Earthdog Lanyard by Beaconpike, red with super head & expression, good narrow front, easily spannable size, moved out & back soundly, coat longer & more open than winners.

PGD (6)

1 Castel’s Flutorum Artful Dodger, grizzle dog of good size, liked his head, for me a little less beard would show it off to advantage, presented with a very harsh & dense jacket with thick pelt. Good for size & span, tailset good, moved the best in the class, good honest typy dog;

2 Fawcett’s Carrock Carnegie, another lovely moderate grizzle dog, appealed for his type & size, body of good length,excellent topline & tailset, close up to winner, 1st moved out better today.

LD (9,1)

1 Goddard’s Kgills King of Swing at Awbrooksky, grizzle in super new tight harsh coat on a thick pelt, narrow all through with good angles front & rear, scored in head & expression, good length of neck into well laid narrow shoulders, body was a good length with ribs well back. Topline & tailset were excellent as was tail carriage. He was presented in fit condition, loved his outline stood & on the move. In the challenge he moved with purpose & drive, this is where he excelled, extremely delighted to award him the CC;

2 Johnson’s Karison Keiser, grizzle who was very close up to 1st & appealed greatly for size & outline, very good head, again another who was in a top class harsh coat with thick pelt, another difficult decision, my winner was more settled & positive on the move.

OD (8,3)

The first three were presented in the super correct double coat with correct thick pelts.

1 Fryer’s Irton Morse Code, red in lovely full coat, very good head, he has an excellent length of body with ribs right back giving a lovely balanced outline, excellent angles front & rear, moved well to take this class, in the challenge he lost some of his sparkle;

2 North’s Ch Northborders Mr Pickles, bl/t who was similar to winner in outline. Another with a very good head, in harsh thick coat with probably the thickest pelt of the entry (I could barely pick it up!) Moved out well. Two handsome typy Borders.

MPB (4,1)

1 Illingworth’s Witch Way to Thornyhurst, a very charming grizzle puppy with a super head, liked her outline & length of body, super topline & tailset, moved out soundly & happily, very promising youngster, just a little short on coat today;

2 Read’s Roxambor Triple Step, grizzle who was taller than winner & not so together on the move, head still developing, she had an excellent harsh coat, just needs a bit more time but she’s got the makings there.

PB (8,5)

1 Girling’s Benattivo Fire Flower, grizzle who caught my eye straight away for her balanced outline, narrow type with a lovely length of body, super tailset. Good angles front & rear. Pretty head, in a lovely harsh coat with plenty of pelt, enjoyed showing herself off with a lovely confident attitude, everything you would want at this stage, very promising youngster, BP;

2 Pearson & Towers’ Shiftyfox Fairymist, grizzle who was presented in an excellent thick tight coat, liked her head a lot, excellent spannable size, moved out well, not the topline of the winner.

JB (14,2)

1 Fraser’s Achnagairn Tutti Frutti, a very charming pretty grizzle bitch of perfect size, in super harsh coat with thickest of pelts, her outline was very good with correctly angulated front & rear, good length of body, topline & tailset completed a lovely picture, moved out confidently with drive & accuracy;

2 Brannan & Kelly’s Brankell Double Or Quits, grizzle with a lovely attractive otter head, another with very good harsh tight coat on a thick pelt, tailset good, very close to winner but not as settled on the move.

GB (13,1w/d)

A quality class & this was the only class I felt I needed to shortlist to get a closer view of my preferred 5.

1 Moore’s Bardenfox Pussy Galore, grizzle in perfect fettle, coat was harsh & dense, feminine otter like head with beautiful expression, lovely elegant neck into narrow shoulders & well ribbed back body, topline & tailset completed a lovely outline, when I went over her on the table I liked everything about her & hoped she would impress as much on the move, which she did. Moved away & back with enthusiasm & accuracy, a real eye catcher delighted to award her the CC & BOB;

2 Golding’s Beaconpike Venus, red who was another dressed in her best coat & pelt, feminine otter like head with the darkest eyes & neat ears. Lovely for size & spanned no problem, tail short & well set, when she came in to challenge for the RCC she really pulled out the stops on the move & free stood showing her excellent outline, she completely took my eye when it counted, pleased to award her the RCC today.

PGB (16,6)

1 Stevens’ Cobstoneway Love Song, such a lovely Border & my type of bitch, lovely for size, her head is strong but still feminine, narrow front, excellent topline & tailset, happy showgirl who moved out with confidence, seriously considered in the challenge but her coat wasn’t as hard as my CC & RCC, liked her a lot;

2 Samson’s Tarkaswell Doctors Orders, grizzle with good head & expression, good neat narrow front, again excellent for size & span, super harsh coat with very good pelt, accurate & active on the move, presentation first class, topline not as 1st on the move today.

LB (14,4)

1 Ritson’s Borderexpress Miss Moppet, grizzle who caught my eye for her balanced outline, body of good length, attractive feminine head with a lovely kind expression, good reach of neck into a narrow well angulated shoulder, body of correct length which was well ribbed back, topline & tail set spot on, in excellent coat with thick pelt. A good honest bitch that moved out well;

2 North’s Emblehope Cape Verdi at Northborders, fabulous ticking on this Blue & tan with a superb coat & pelt, maybe a bit plain in the head but it’s correctly proportioned, lovely balance to her outline, with good angles front & back, tail was short & thick & set well, fit well conditioned girl who moved with drive & accuracy.

OB (11,3)

1 Brannan & Kelly’s Ch Cedarhill Rising Star at Brankell, grizzle with a pretty feminine otter like head, good straight narrow front on neat feet, presented in immaculate tight coat & thick pelt, excellent for size & span, beautiful outline stood & on the move, Another who went better in her class than the challenge;

2 Samson’s Ch Tarakaswell Doctors Orders, liked this bitch as soon as she came into the ring & thought she would be my winner, dark grizzle coat which was harsh & dense. A lovely mover, she shows off her racy outline well both stood & going around. Lost to winner as I felt she could have carried more condition over her rib today.
