BORDER JUDGE BOURNEMOUTH 15

Border Terriers

I would like to thank the officers & committee for inviting me to judge, the stewards for unobtrusively keeping things running smoothly & the exhibitors for bringing their good dogs & accepting my decisions with grace. I was gratified to have only 3 absentees despite the awful weather forecast. The necessary inside ring, albeit slightly sloping & uneven, was a decent size giving each exhibit the opportunity to get into stride. Coats varied but there were many good textured topcoats over dense undercoats & on the whole pelts were thick. My worst issue was that some exhibits, despite being narrow & not fat, were very heavy & also a difficult span. Pads were generally thick but feet could be better trimmed as some that looked large & flat actually weren’t on examination. I look for shortish carrot-like tails & although some were thick at the base & tapering correctly they were overly long. I only found 2 with misplaced teeth & it was delighted to find most today had large well set white teeth in good scissor bite. In the past I’ve commented on lack of condition & poor muscletone in hindquarters so was happy that all today’s entry was presented fit & in hard condition. Overall type was good, I was pleased with both line ups & the veteran classes were a particular treat.

MPD (2)

1 Irving’s Dandyhow Galloping Gourmet, typy 7 months dark grizzle dog. Good head with keen expression. Straight front, lovely neck & shoulders & well-proportioned body. Good topline & short carrot-like tail. Just needs to settle on the move. BPD;

2 Read’s Roxambor Magical Timepiece, almost 7 months. Taller rangier dog with thick pelt. Narrow throughout & easily spanned.

PD (2)

1 Brewster & Green’s Stowthorney Mr Tickle, 11 months. Won the class on head properties & more positive movement. He has a broad skull & strong jaw & is narrow throughout;

2 Dean’s Navy Seal By Tyrian, just 11 months this handy sized b/t had a lovely crisp jacket on a thick pelt & correct tail.

JD (2)

1 Eriksson’s Toftahill New Edition, tallish narrow dog. Good breadth of skull with small dark ears & dark eye. Well balanced & having thick pelt;

2 Rasmus’ Onthill Aramis, handy sized b/t with well-ticket harsh jacket. Preferred his size but the stronger head of 1.

YD (3)

1 Dean’s Manorborders Maverick by Tyrian, sensibly sized b/t with well ticked jacket. Good breadth of skull & dark eye. He has a narrow straight front & moderate bone. Is nicely balanced & moved well;

2 Brewster & Green’s Breckgreen Soldier Blue, another with good harsh b/t jacket. Built on racy bodylines & is well angulated both ends. A little plainer in head than 1;

3 Eriksson’s Meadowlake Once In A Blue Moon.

ND (1)

1 S Mr Tickle.

GD (4,1a)

1 Lorraine & Thomas’ Raleniro Second Time Around, good headed dog with lovely expression & strong muzzle. Neat feet & adequate bone. A little deep in brisket but spannable. Good angulation enabled him to move out well;

2 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Caius, b/t with decent head & excellent depth of coat & good undercoat on a thick pelt. Nice carrot shaped tail. He just lost out on movement to 1;

3 Westland’s Renaissance Rhododendron.

PGD (3)

1 Jackson’s Clipstone Starshine, beautifully presented in pin-wire coat & in great condition. On his toes & with keen expression. Masculine head with mouthful of well-set teeth & large nostrils. He was a good weight easily spanned & ribbed well back;

2 Kelland’s Kyscafter Frosty Jack, up a size from 1. Well-shaped skull & short strong muzzle. Good topline & tailset & well-bent stifle. A little short of coat but earned his place on movement;

3 Newman’s Nookshot Nutcracker.

LD (7)

1 Girling’s Benattivo Betfred, liked him for type & body proportions. Good head well set onto clean neckline & lean narrow body. Neat tight feet. In good coat & showing well;

2 Dean’s Tyrian Outlaw, good for overall size. Easily spanned. Attractive head with alert expression & good well set scissor bite. Correct moderately short well shaped tail;

3 Waller’s Question Master.

OD (7)

1 Wilson’s Ch Olderhill Afortunado, grand Border type & so good to go over. Masculine & workmanlike without a hint of coarseness. Has a lovely head & alert expression. All in proportion he has a neat front, well laid shoulder & good length of rib is easy to span & comes to hand beautifully. Presented in harsh coat of good depth & keeping his topline on the move he was a worthy winner of both a strong class & the CC;

2 Hall & Ellis’ Ch Brackenfell Bok To Bach, an immediately eyecatching dog with a striking rich red coat. He has a good ottery head with dark eye & lovely expression. He is spannable, ribbed well back & has a good turn of stifle. Such a showman but giving way today to my preferred size & the narrower front of the winner. RCC;

3 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Cyrus.

VD (3)

Thank you for bringing 3 such nice veterans.

1 Freeman’s Bolt Tail Jebba, I fell hard for this 9 years young man who is so typy & has such a lovely head & ‘been there, done that’ expression. All male he moved well & has a super jacket;

2 Lorraine’s Stbedehounds Frank In Sense of Raleniro, at 7 years this narrow fronted b/t also moved well &, having more coat on the day, beat off the challenge from a good dog in 3;

3 Wren & Langdon’s Hoary Morning.

MPB (1)

1 Steven’s Cobstoneway Love Song, 8 months. So feminine with lovely ottery head, super mouth & alert expression. She has a well-proportioned body, good coat texture, good topline & tailset & moved out positively. BP.

PB (5)

1 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Domina Candesco, 9 months sweet headed bitch with strong short muzzle & wicked expression. She has a narrow front & sensible bone. Was in good coat & moving steadily;

2 Irving’s Dandyhow Mazurka, at 9 months this attractive youngster also has a good topline & tailset. Is ribbed well back & has a well-set carrot-like tail. She has well let down hocks & moved well. Head not yet as well developed as 1;

3 Ritchie’s Ianteg Red Rubi.

JB (7)

1 Girling’s Benattivo Good Friday, beautifully balanced feminine bitch who has a lovely ottery head with flat skull, small ears & short strong muzzle. She is a handy size & is easily spanned. A well laid shoulder & good turn of stifle enabled sound movement & she has a hard jacket on a super thick pelt & good topline with short well-shaped tail. Couldn’t resist her. RCC in hot competition;

2 Morgan’s Blewecourt Carpe Horam, I liked this one very much too. She showed so well & has a feminine head with lovely expression, narrow straight front, neat feet & well-shaped body with correct topline & tailset. In a hard fought match I separated her from 1 only by her coat just going over its best;

3 Rasmus’ Argentail Titania by Onthill.

YB (8)

1 Spencer’s Ploughdown Persephone, stylish light red grizzle who oozes quality & shows beautifully. She has good body proportions, flat rib & stands over the ground well. In excellent deep coat & moving soundly she was a serious contender in the challenge;

2 Aldis’ Torryburn Cadenza, slightly smaller made with a sweet head, narrow front & neat feet. She is well angulated both ends so moved well keeping her topline. Outshone by her more showy classmate;

3 Parkes’ Clevepark Dazzle.

NB (0).

GB (2)

1 Cole’s Laurelton Charlie’s Angel at Towden, this young lady has large teeth in a good bite. Excellent really harsh deep jacket. She is ribbed well back has a good turn of stifle & moved steadily;

2 Spafford’s Dassett Tiggiwinkle, good headed bitch who has a good mouth & strong jaw. She has a narrow front & moved well so it was another nit-pick decision & 1 was a slightly easier span.

PGB (9,1)

1 Baird’s Tojamat Debutante for Dowgri, a very nice bitch, good in all departments. She has a typical outline with good front & rear angulation & shouts game & active. Right for size & easily spanned she showed well & pushed so hard in the challenge but exuberance just got the better of her on the move;

2 Westland & Kerry’s Abisu Domino, also a handy sized bitch with sweet head & expression. She has a narrow well angled front & good rear end. Good tail shape. Coat was dense but just going over;

3 Anscombe’s Orangebox Tangerine Dream.

LB (8)

1 Sansom’s Tarkaswell Double Agent, stood out. Lovely handy sized feminine bitch well presented in crisp jacket. She has a lovely feminine ottery head with good breadth of skull well-set dark eyes with super expression short muzzle & large nostrils. She has a neat front & feet & her head is well set on to a clean neck flowing through well laid shoulders to correct topline & tailset. She showed good reach in front, her racy & well-toned hindquarters gave good drive & she held her topline whilst on the move. Pulled out all the stops in the challenge to take a well-deserved CC & then showed a clean pair of heels to take BOB;

2 Levett’s Kyscafter Fizz, well-shaped head & OK for size but a shade stockier than 1. She has a neat front a good bend of stifle & moved well on good feet with thick pads;

3 Lorraine & Seymour’s Bubble And Squeak for Raleniro.

OB (7)

1 Kellaway’s Benattivo Bookmaker, liked the style & lines of this bitch. She has a typical Border expression & is good for size & span & comes easily to hand. She possesses a lovely thick pelt & moved well in the class once settled;

2 Wilson’s Olderhill Malvena, very pretty headed b/t with neat ears. She is so feminine & handy sized whilst fit to do the job. Touch & go for 1st place & a pity she met the winner today;

3 Cobby’s Pops Blackcurrant Fizz.

VB (5)

Another class of lovely veterans.

1 Freeman’s Borderella Elsa, my recorded notes say “a heartbreaker”. A good Border will last & keep their front & correct mouth, at almost 13 she still has a lovely straight narrow front, a good mouth & is obviously still enjoying herself. In excellent coat. BV;

2 Wrenn & Langdon’s Tyrian Rosebud, at 11½ years this well-proportioned lady powered round the ring with tremendous reach & drive;

3 Taylor’s Lutrabeck Layla.
