BORDER JUDGE BOURNEMOUTH 17

This was such a special appointment and I am indebted to Bournemouth for the opportunity. You see it was "Aunty Eva" Heslop, the revered breeder of the Corburn Border Terriers, who drove me to my first ever allbreed Ch show in 1970. Eva took Sunday school in the Methodist chapel in Corbridge, Northumberland, and I was her secret weapon boy soloist at the competitive music festival! I particularly remember the beautiful Ch Corburn Corn Dolly shown by Mr Skeet. Bellingham show was not only local for me but THE Mecca for Geordie/Scots Borders. I have judged the breed since 1992 and been educated both by a breed club seminar in 2012 and by obtaining a JDP Credit in Nov 2013. That would theoretically have halved the KC Judges Sub requirement of 160 hands on. I actually had 200. I only mention all this as cynics assume the likes of me to have been "fast tracked" and/or to have no actual interest. 69 of the original 82 starters made it so I had plenty to work with. THE bugbear was fronts whether steep /elbows /plaiting /hackney. As a toydog specialist I am accustomed to spotting lift / hackney that is often written into the breed standards. But this no decorative breed but rather a functional working terrier "capable of following a horse" that requires endurance and hence a rhythmical swing straight through from the shoulders ensuring no wasted effort, He will tire all too quickly otherwise. Moreover the breed standard expressly includes in the Faults section an assessment of "its effect on the terrier's ability to work".

MPD (1)

1 Jenkins' Badgerback Bataclan, 6 month old, excellent outline, balanced angles, good neck and backline, harsh jacket, good skull but a little long and narrow in muzzle, loose in front but plenty of time to firm up, promising.

PD (5,1)

1 Ruth's Bowencloud Busy Bee, 10 month old, sired by OD winner, very nice type, excellent head with breadth and short, strong muzzle, well constructed but can firm in pastern, correctly narrow and fairly long, ribbed back, racy quarters, excellent jacket, a quality youngster, BPIB.

2 Newman's Kyscafter Equinox, 9 month old, excellent bodylines and balance to give an ex outline and easy profile movement, just plainer headed being a touch long and narrow in muzzle.

3 Woollacott's Tufterslodge Tea N Cake.

JD (3)

1 Guverchin's Baillieswells Glengyle At Glebeheath, just 13 month old, gave me the most positives, all coming together in the one exhibit, my hands flowed over him as one part fitted so easily into the next, typical otter head with squareness in breadth/depth across skull and short, strong muzzle, spannable, has some forechest thanks to his excellent forehand, good jacket and pelt, correctly narrow and ribbed back though I would elongate him a tad for preference, racy quarters with matching angulation to that up front, well let down in hock, ex feet, but it was his rhythmical, straight striding soundness that kept him ahead together with his game attitude. Dog CC (and I am aware a 2nd CC has certainly followed!)

2 Haydon and Gibbing's Earthtaw Indiana Jones,14 month old, very good head type in skull and muzzle proportions, albeit prefer smaller ear, excellent neckand backline, nothing overangulated, weaving in front.

3 Spafford's Oakyard Out N' About At Dassett.

YD (3)

1 Hughes and Kendrick's Chatmoss Bullet Tooth Tony JW, 23 month old, decent head and small ear, good outline w/o exaggeration, good neck and backline, spannable, excellent jacket, came into his own on the move where he was foot perfect with a good length of stride.

2 Read's Roxambor Space Invader, 20 month old, less forward and needing more condition over the loin, certainly narrow and fairly long with racy hindquarters, fails in front.

3 Newman's Cedarhill Shining Star At Nookshot.

ND (4,1)

1 B Busy Bee.

2 B Bataclan.

3 Jenkins' Badgerbeck Bordeaux.

GD (1).

1 E Indiana Jones.

PGD (5,1)

1 Winsley and Holmes' Davmar Levi, 2 year old, very typy, lovely otter head of the correct proportions, deep and narrow through the body, spannable, ex jacket and pelt, moved true, equally balanced, if rather straight, angles, prefer higher tailset.

2 Read's Roxambor Magical Timepiece Sh.CM, 2 and a half years, plainer headed being longer and narrower in muzzle, scores with his lovely, flowing bodylines, correctly narrow and deep, excellent neckline, well angulated fore and aft, good tailset and carriage, racy quarters, went well.

3 Taylor's Smockmill Brandysnap.

LD (8,1)

1 Irving's Dandyhow Galloping Gourmet JW, 2 years, frankly there is nothing not to like, thoroughly typical both in head and outline, clean front, spannable, good angles and backline, harsh jacket, thick pelt, excellent tail carriage, here was an exhibit that was masculine, workmanlike and absolutely sound, of obvious Champion quality as marked by Reserve Dog CC.

2 Jackson's Clipstone Starshine, 3 years, also of CC quality, superb outline, deep and narrow of fair length, spannable, balanced angles, excellent jacket, such an easy mover as he demonstrated not only true but also economic movement, just a little plainer in head being narrower in muzzle.

3 Hall and Ellis' Brackenfall Ragamuffin.

OD (6)

Competive class.

1 Halland Ellis' Ch Brackenfall Bok To Bach JW, 4 years old, a d. with an understandably mighty reputation, Dandyhow sired, choc full of breed specifics, excellent otter headpiece w/o pronounced stop, the epitome of balance, outstanding body proportions and bodylines, ribs carried well back, correctly narrow and deep, excellent tailset and carriage, short of coat and whilst he moved absolutely sound he could not match the long, straight profile stride of the two placed above him in the challenge.

2 Girling's Benattivo Betfred, 4 years old, utmost quality, another who is thoroughly typical from head to tail, excellent neck and backline to give a balanced outline, spannable, well ribbed back, racy quarters, good jacket, went well, of obvious CC quality.

3 Docwra's Bandicoot Doc Martin.

VD (2)

1 Spencer's Ch Cobstoneway River Magic, 8 years, sheer breed type and still well able to hold his own, looked fit and functional, good head type, good eye and ear, ex neck and backline, spannable, well ribbed back, narrow and of fair length, excellent jacket, sound with good length of stride, a quality exhibit.

2 Westland's Renaissance Rhododendron, 7 years, excellent type, has breadth to skull with short strong muzzle, good outline and proportions, just heavier through his forehand, absolutely sound and active.

MPB (2,1)

1 Medhurst's Grizzledale Hot Chocolate, 6m, can grow on to advantage, needs to strengthen in muzzle, good neck and backline, balanced proportions, good tailset, sound, active mover.

PB (3,1)

1 Ruth's Bowencloud The Bee Charmer, 10 month old, litter sister to the winning PD and sired by the OD, cracking youngster, lovely type all through, good skull, touch narrow in muzzle, good eye, prefer smaller ear, fabulous, flowing outline, ex proportions, well angulated, game and sound on the move with a balanced profile. BPB.

2 Levett's Kyscafter Right On Time, 9 month old, plainer headed with weak muzzle, very well bodied, beautifully balanced angles, good neck and backline, harsh jacket, moved out well and true.

JB (6,1)

1 Irving's Dandyhow Heather Honey,12 month old daughter of Reserve Dog CC, ultra feminine, good head proportions with strength through muzzle, good neck running into quality, balanced bodylines, well angulated,, excellent jacket, racy hindquarters, moved with active ease consistent with her conformation, one to watch through 2018.

2 Roslin-Williams' Mansergh Paint By Numbers, 15 month old, another pretty b., her Champion dam was 2nd in OB, correctly narrow through, ex flowing outline, good jacket and tail carriage, racy quarters, close up, not quite the head properties, went well, another able to look forward to the New Year with confidence.

3 Cobby's Litelheych Secret Potion.

YB (4,1)

1 Fulker's Foxpaw Revelation JW, 19 month old, maturing well, excellent breed type, loved her otter head with keen expression, good neck and backline, clean front, harsh jacket, spannable, positive in profile on the move, should hold her own as she continues to progress through the adult classes.

2 Girling's Benattivo Fire Flower JW, 2 year old, another good head and eye if heavier in ear, well ribbed back, spannable, good neckline, beautifully balanced angles to allow tireless, rhythmical movement, tailset a tad lower, close up and another of obvious quality.

3 Medhurst's Grizzledale Forget Me Not.

NB (2)

1 Milton and Haffenden's Baillieswells Scapa, 13 month old, litter sister od Dog CC, lovely b. of outstanding breed type, excellent head and eye, spannable, thick pelt, quality through her narrow bodylines, excellent tailset and carriage, correct bone and feet, dense coat, sound with a reachy, rhythmical profile, will surely be joining her brother as a CC contender.

2 Roslin-Williams' Mansergh Brush and Palette, 15 month old, correctly narrow through, good neck and backline, lacked coat, positive mover, just found her too fine, particularly in head, as against the above.

GB (2)

1 Winsley's Davmar Move Over, 2 years, very typical, lacks a little depth still, has breadth through skull, short, strong muzzle, keen expression, clean front, balanced angles, straight, striding profile action.

2 Read's Atanasova Lady Sofiya At Roxambor Sh CM, 4 years, plainer headed, excellent body proportions, good neck and backline, harsh jacket, racy quarters, weak at elbow.

PGB (7,1

1 Dochra's Bandicoot Dragon Glass,2 years, daughter of 3rd in OD, so many positives, scored in head type, correct degree of stop, clean front, not too heavy in bone, ex bodylines of fair length, harsh jacket, went true and gamely, can still body up to advantage, and so strengthen in loin, when she will readily win her way out of this level and up the rankings.

2 Read's Badgerbeck Cha Cha Cha At Roxambor, 4 and a half years, good skull but longer in muzzle, conversely, needs no more condition, well angulated to give excellent outline, harsh jacket, prefer higher tailset, moved out well.

3 Hooper's Earthtaw Goldfinch.

LB (12,3).

Excellent class.

1 Brannan and Kelly's Brankell Double Or Quits, 2 and a half year old, outstanding breed type, superior otter head of correct strength and proportions with just enough stop, firm front, good neck and backline, deep and narrow, spannable, well ribbed back, harsh jacket, racy, well angulated hindquarters, good tailset and carriage, good length of straight stride, clearly of Champion quality as marked by awarding her Reserve Bitch CC.

2 Stevens' Cobstoneway Love Song JW Sh CM, 2 and a half year old, so many breed specifics, good skull, eye and ear, touch narrower in muzzle, beautifully balanced and angulated, good neck and backline, well ribbed back, racy quarters, good jacket, moved true and with ease, another of CC quality.

3 Jenkins' Badgerbeck The Masher.

OB (9,2)

Truly competitive.

1 Sansom's Ch Tarkaswell Double Agent, 4 years, half sister to 2nd in OD, as you work your way through your entry so you are always looking to find THE exhibit that not only most represents YOUR interpretation of the breed standard but also screams "quality" and here she stood! classic breed type, superb stance, has some breadth and depth across her flat skull, stop not too pronounced, dark eye with keen expression, neat ear, clean front, correct degree of bone, spannable, well ribbed back, deep and narrow of fair length, strong loin, thick pelt, harsh, dense jacket, racy quarters, well let down in hock, straight, rhythmical' effortless mover on excellent feet. Bitch CC and BOB.

2 Roslin-Williams' Ch Mansergh Plusfours, 5 years, dam of 2nd in JB, so feminine, struck me as truly defining "fit and functional", a little plainer in head, excellent outline being not only narrow and deep but also of fair length and well ribbed back, excellent jacket, racy quarters, good tail carriage, her balanced angulation provided ease of movement with a good stride.

3 Spencer's Ploughdown Persephone.

VB (3)

1 Levett's Ryscafter Kestrel Sh CM, 8 and a half year old, such excellence that I would have expected her to be titled, not only exudes breed type, and in so many specific details, but also one of the soundest shown today, feminine head w/o being weak in any way, super' flowing outline, spannable, well ribbed back, strong loin, classic profile both stood and on the move so as to still challenge the best.

2 Stevens' Cobstoneway Bayou Sunrise, 7 year old, dam of 2nd in LB and litter sister of 1st in VD, a longer, narrower muzzle, excellent angles that were evident as she moved, good outline, well ribbed back, excellent jacket, good tailset and carriage, just heavier built all through.

3 Small's Badgerbeck Tree Pipit At Tilmoray JW Sh CM
