BORDER CITY OF BIRMINGHAM 16 Judge: Mrs C Archibald BEST OF BREED : 4600 GILPIN Mr & Mrs J R & H Otterbobs Xolana BORDER JUDGE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM 16 Border Terriers My thanks to the officers & committee of Birmingham Canine Society, for the opportunity to judge the Border Terriers at this show. My personal thanks to all the exhibitors for allowing me to ‘go over’ their dogs, & making it a most enjoyable & memorable day. I was delighted to find some fabulous jackets/pelts, which is crucial for a working terrier. On the downside, I found some exhibits with weak pasterns, hence front movement issues, & some ‘poppy’ eyes which detracts from the ottery head, & expression of the border terrier, some very attractive dogs just too much of them. On the whole, apart from a missing tooth to a misplaced one, most were reasonably fit, & there were some very close decisions. VD (2) What a way to start the day! 1 South’s Borderella Day Tripper, almost 8 years old, grizzle with lovely otter head, & expression, this dog has improved so much with maturity, easily spanned, fit condition, good angulation, thick pelt/coat just coming through. BV. Delighted to see he was VG3; 2 Lorraine’s Stbedehounds Frank In Sense of Raleniro, b/t, also 8 years of age, not as strong in head as 1, has neatly placed ears, moved out steadily on neat feet. MPD (6,1a) 1 Matthew’s Togamatt Moriarty, barely 6 months, grizzle with a fabulous thick jacket & pelt, well shaped head, neat ear placement, spanned easily, neat tight feet, moving out well fore & aft showing off his carroty tail; 2 Reynolds & Marston-Pollock’s Etterbern Sloane Ranger, very smart grizzle, neat head with little stop, level topline held on the move, longer in loin than 1, not the coat or pelt of 1, front movement a little erratic; 3 Golding’s Beaconpike Darkest Night. PD (3) 1 Hughes & Kendrick’s Chatmoss Bullet Tooth Tony, lighter grizzle with excellent pelt, ottery head, with strong muzzle, enough bone, moved well on neat feet holding his level topline. BPD; 2 Channer’s Benattivo Gun Fire at Rubyfin, finer in bone than 1, neatly placed ears, typical expression, less jacket than 1, moved out well, not much between these two; 3 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Pluto. JD (7,3) 1 Anscombe’s Orangebox Dark Energy, b/t up to size, but spannable strong head ,thickest of jackets, which may have made him look heavy, neat feet & moved out well; 2 Larner’s Hawcoat Mr Fixit, darker grizzle, decent head, not the jacket or muscle tone of 1, moved out OK; 3 Pearce’s Shiftyfox To The Victor. YD (2,1) 1 Reeves & Heslop’s Baywillow Blueprint, b/t as name suggests, very attractive 20 months old dog, thick jacket & pelt, lovely balanced head, with attractive dark points, moved out very well on neat feet, just spannable, a tad heavy. PGD (4,2) 1 Keeffe’s Keebank Charlie’s Diamond, grizzle a very nice example of the breed, thick pliable pelt & jacket, neatly set ears on a strong head, good topline, moved with drive, just spannable; 2 Barber’s Acumlow Parsley, grizzle, different type to 1, narrower dog, deceivingly also just spannable, not as strong in head as 1, a tad short of coat, didn’t move as confidently. LD (12,3) Strong class. 1 Horner’s Stineval Napoleon, grizzle in tip-top condition, lovely border head/expression, with strong jaw, thick pelt, tight jacket, easily spanned, neatest of feet, moved foursquare with drive which earned him the class. RCC; 2 Duxbury’s Ridgerow Rifleman, another one with depth of quality, similar size to 1, enough bone, excellent pelt/jacket, moved out well maintaining a level topline; 3 Clark’s Gameway McVitie. OD (9,3) Close decision between these two. 1 Holmes’ Barnby Caramel Wafer at Bimandi, lighter grizzle in top form, terrific pelt & jacket, spanned easily, typical border head, neat dark points, strong jaw/muzzle, moved with purpose, plenty of reach & driving from behind, lovely example of the breed. CC; 2 Girling’s Benattivo Betfred, grizzle with typical border head, lovely expression, well put together bodylines, leading to well set tail, fabulous jacket/feet, moved very well; 3 Anscombe’s Orangebox Dark Energy. GCD (1) 1 Hollinsbee’s Otterwood Caius, lovely dog of good proportions, honest type with excellent expression, neatest of feet, good body length & moved very well. Sadly short of coat. VB (4,3) 1 Small’s Badgerbeck Tree Pipit at Tilmoray, 9 years of age looking well, in good jacket, & moving out well. MPB (16,3) 1 Armstrong’s Ploughdown Paloma, well put together 6 months old grizzle, with the sweetest expression, lovely head with well set neat ears, dark eye, in good jacket, moved very well. Pleased to award her BPB & BP; 2 Fulkner’s Foxpaw Revelation, slightly older than 1, remarks very similar to 1, a close decision here, lovely outline & moved exceptionally well, a little short of coat; 3 Fawcett’s Carrock Caelan. PB (6,1) 1 Girling’s Benattivo Fire Flower, another lovely pup, with strong head, typical expression, excellent jacket/pelt, narrow front & moved out well; 2 Jenkins’ Quite Fiery Lucifer by Badgerbeck, very close decision between these two, b/t with excellent tight jacket, was on form moving out well just preferred overall balance of 1; 3 Southam’s Southash Finding Bliss. JB (17,8) 1 Docwra’s Bandicoot Dragon Glass, grizzle in lean hard condition, so easy to span, narrow front, lovely balance & movement, thickest of jackets, well set tail/ rib longer cast than 2, was a strong contender for higher honours, just needs to mature a little more; 2 James & Render’s Chorbeck Gossip Girl at Blackmine, very attractive grizzle, a little deeper in chest than 1, in excellent condition, strong head, thick jacket, just preferred the movement of 1; 3 Theobald’s Bimandi’s Bananrama. YB (11,3) 1 Brannan & Kelly’s Brankell Double Or Quits, what a lovely bitch, lighter grizzle, excelled in head, well set ears, good reach of neck, neatest of feet, steady mover, level topline & thick pelt decent jacket; 2 Pickering’s Picer Flora Mcivor, very smart dark grizzle supporting the thickest of jackets, slightly deeper in chest than 1, spannable, lovely bright eye/expression moved well on neat feet; 3 Hillman’s Badgerbeck Fair Trade. PGB (11,3) 1 Pinkham’s Puzzlers Hope Full Hattie at Broadsmill, b/t with a super head, strong jaw/ dentition, looked deep in chest but spannable, thick pelt, made quite a picture moving out with drive; 2 Lorraine’s Raleniro New Rose, b/t slightly finer than 1, in construction, good expression, well set tail, moving well; 3 Mooney’s Chesterton Boutique. LB (19,7) 1 Spencer’s Ploughdown Persephone, grizzle, although up to size, a joy to go over, good length of body, excellent rib/bone, looked a bit deep in chest but spannable, strong but feminine head, with well set ears, great jacket, moved very well; 2 Mooney’s Brumberhill Bollinger for Chesterton, grizzle a different type to 1, but had equal qualities, not the same size of frame, or depth of jacket, but supported a lovely typical expression, moving out well; 3 Morgan’s Blewecourt Carpe Horam. OB (10,3) 1 Gilpin’s Otterbobs Xolana, grizzle that fits the Standard to a ‘t’ fit hard condition, well muscled, the best of double jackets covering a thick pliable pelt, good for bone, handy size, strong ottery head, but feminine, typical expression, moved with purpose, plenty of reach & driving well from behind. CC & BOB; 2 Bladen’s Emblehope Dance And Dance, different type to 1, not just in colour, b/t, has all the attributes of the breed standard, most beautiful bodylines, super jacket, lovely carroty tail, moved so well, a very close decision, just preferred the overall balance & presence of 1. RCC; 3 Pickering’s Picer Aimee Vilbert. GCB (5,3) 1 Aldous’ Twigglestone Elfenor, grizzle, of nice proportions, with a good head, sadly lacking in coat today, moved well on neat feet; 2 Pearce’s Bimandi’s Bellisima, slightly longer cast than 1, a little heavy in ear, excellent pelt, moved OK.
