BORDER JUDGE MANCHESTER 13

Border Terriers

My first time awarding CCs to the breed. I was extremely pleased with my main winners who were all in great condition & fine examples of the breed.

Of concern were a number of exhibits with round eyes & too much stop also some long & flat feet though some of these could be improved by trimming & nail clipping. Coats as ever were at all stages. I feel judges need to pay attention to correct double coats as a Border could survive many things we pay particular attention to in the show ring but not five minutes doing his original job of work in the depths of winter without his correct jacket.

MPD (6)

1 Ruth’s Peakrunner Arrows Of Gold, best for size, attractive head, good expression, in good double coat but needed tidying, especially feet, moved steadily;

2 Tutin’s Riseburn Retro, bl/t, up on the leg. In good coat, moved well but not the head of 1;

3 Haydon & Gibbing’s Earthtaw Ethos.

PD (6)

1 Dickenson’s Badgerholme Epsom Jet, balanced bl/t, nice outline, good topline, OK in head, well presented with neat feet, showed & moved well, in good coat. BPD;

2 Day’s Withershin’s Frankie, attractive head, short strong muzzle, good flat skull. Preferred his size has nice balance. Moved & showed well. Lost out as lacking coat;

3 Lowry & Hodgson’s Ravenside Going Underground.

JD (5)

1 Higham’s Comberdown Finnegan, strong headed dog with keen expression, good eye & punishing jaw, narrow easily spanned, moved with drive. Just right for size which I preferred over 2, though not in such good coat;

2 Duxbury’s Keycharm Phantom by Ridgebow, in very good coat, well angulated front & rear, good rib carried well back, moved well holding a good outline, very strong head;

3 Gurvercin’s Glebeheath Jump The Gun.

PGD (8)

1 Rumsam’s Saygo of Hassage, liked very much for type, not overdone in any way, good head with correct expression, right length of neck into well placed shoulder. Kept a good topline finished by a well set & carried tail. Preferred his length of leg over

2 Woollacot’s Tufterslodge Good Move, stockier type in lovely new coat but very short. Good topline & well set tail, appealing head & expression. Moved well but not as narrow in front as 1;

3 Johnson’s Karison Klaret.

LD (8)

1 Haydon & Gibbing’s Earthtaw Dexter, very attractive dog who was in really great condition, super thick double jacket & thick pelt, very good head, short strong muzzle & good eye, well placed ears. Moved soundly from his well muscled hindquarters. Definitely said ‘look at me’. RCC;

2 South’s Borderella Day Tripper, another who pleases for type & balance, very attractive head with good expression, in super coat & condition, good pelt. Not a great showman, covered the ground well in profile;

3 Haughton’s Chorbeck Charlie Chaplin.

OD (6)

1 Matthews’ Rexlands Cock Robin, really lovely type, great head with good skull to muzzle proportions. Just right for size, correct shape & balance, in the thickest of double jackets with a good harsh texture. Moved with great drive & enthusiasm from good hindquarters, never stopped showing. CC & BOB;

2 Stockley’s Ch Foxfactor Pied Piper, another really super dog, quality head & expression, strong & masculine but not overdone. Beautiful balance with correct angulation fore & rear, kept a great topline & moved out true finished by a well carried tail. A little deeper in chest than 1 & not the depth of coat;

3 Wilson’s Olderhill Afortunado.

VD (1)

1 Stockley’s Foxfactor Hornblower, smart 7 year old of correct size, still narrow with good topline, well set tail. Moved well both ways.

MPB (6)

1 Bates’ Peakrunner Follow My Dreams, nice type with good head & expression, right for size at this age. Correct double coat but needs tidying especially feet & nails. Moved steadily. Topline OK but tail could be better set;

2 May & Whisker’s Thistlestone Jellybean, bl/t, pretty head, nice short strong muzzle, good in front with a level topline & well set tail. Moved a little erratically but OK when settled;

3 Gilpin’s Doreen Of Lindale via Otterbobs.

PB (11)

1 Armstrong’s Ploughdown Portia, eyecatching puppy in beautiful blue jacket, well turned out with lovely neat feet, good head, straight front, well ribbed back with good angulation fore & rear, just the right amount of bone. Moved out really well, happy showgirl. BP;

2 Higham’s Comberdown Thistle, another well turned out puppy, in super blue coat, very good for balance & shape, very pretty feminine head, moved & showed well. Two very nice puppies;

3 Moss’ Tombac Tara at Vallemoss.

JB (10)

1 Holmes’ Bimandi’s Belladonna, quality ‘no nonsense’ bitch, well put together, just right for size & bone, good head with correct expression, good reach of neck into well laid shoulder & the right amount of angulation. Fit & moved with drive. Considered for top honours but lost out due to lack of top coat;

2 Dean & Whyte’s Cedarhill Irrestistabelle, bl/t, attractive head, strong muzzle, good width to skull. Would prefer a smaller ear. Good rear angulation, moved out well holding a good topline;

3 Haughton’s Jamespaw Cockle Shell Bay by Chorbeck.

PGB (9)

1 Stockley’s Foxfactor Cue The Music, very appealing for type, lovely head with good eye giving keen expression, good reach of neck & well laid shoulder, level topline, well angulated rear, tail well set & carried, moved soundly;

2 Gilpin’s Otterbobs Umber, workmanlike balanced bitch of good size, strong head with punishing jaw, hard fit condition, showing & moving well;

3 Phillips’ Nantcoch Ffion.

LB (8)

1 Lowry’s Ravenside Zenyatta, great depth of coat & pelt on this bitch, well proportioned head, shallow stop & nice dark eye. Good topline held on the move & well set tail, good length of rib. Moved soundly;

2 Johnson’s Karison Koffee, a more compact bitch also in very thick coat which made her look a little heavy. Very pretty strong head, good neck & topline, short thick tail. Moved true & showed well;

3 Day’s Withershin’s Daddies Girl.

OB (6)

1 Armstrong’s Ir Ch Blewecourt Manhattan at Ploughdown, very well presented bitch in first class coat & condition, created a very good outline from the tip of her nose through her workmanlike head with very little stop down her well set neck to good topline & well set & carried tail. Deep body but spannable due to good shape of rib. Moved soundly & true, well handled to get the best from her. CC;

2 May & Whisker’s Thistlestone Jenny Wren, good for size, unexaggerated bitch of nice type, attractive head & expression. Moved soundly & covered the ground on a long stride. Though a little unco-operative with her handler in the challenge her type & good coat tipped the balance. RCC;

3 Pickering’s Picer Grace Darling.

VB (2)

1 Ramsden’s Benattivo Rock Rose, many would consider small but I’m sure fits within the weight Standard. Lovely head, short muzzle, good eye & well set ears, good topline & well set tail that never stopped wagging, in good double coat. Moved true with enthusiasm;

2 South’s Borderella Emma, better leg length on this bitch with good balanced outline. Showed well, just preferred head & expression of 1.
