BORDER JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 15

Border Terriers

Overall, I felt there was reasonable quality in those forward. Some exhibitors continue to have their dogs underfed &/or carrying little muscle, both to the detriment of a terrier expected to put in a day’s work. There were a number of untypical heads – lacking width to the skull & strength to the muzzle. Please keep in mind the shape of an otter’s skull.

I was very pleased with my top winners & extend my thanks to all the exhibitors.

MPD (7,1a)

1 Dean’s Navy Seal by Tyrian, bl/t, enough substance & bone, good coat – in a class where some lacked condition. Good bend of stifle & moved well but lacked a bit of sparkle today;

2 Brewster & Green’s Stowthorney Mr Tickle, good length of body & ribs carried well back. Moved with a good length of stride on good feet & shown in good coat;

3 Fryer’s Irton Mountain Dew.

PD (5)

1 Lowry’s Ravenside Raise Your Glass, well shaped head, keen expression, neat ear & good length of neck stretching into well angled shoulder. Good topline & well set tail. Moved with drive from well formed quarters. Bit short of coat today. BPD;

2 Bryan & Pounder’s Hemlockstone Nimrod, not as strong in head as 1. Good shoulder & narrow in front. Stood on good feet & presented in good, pale coloured jacket. Would like to see him again when he has had time to grow on & strengthen up;

3 Docwra’s Bandicoot Doc Martin.

JD (10,2)

1 Higham’s Comberdown Reiver, short, strong muzzle with little stop. Big enough but spannable & narrow in front, correct angulation in shoulder & stood on good feet. Ribs carried well back & racy loin. Pleasing topline & tailset. Moved well & shown in really good condition. Well balanced with no exaggeration;

2 Horner’s Stineval Napoleon, slightly smaller all through than 1, the size of dog who could work almost anywhere. Strong enough, good length to ribcage. Correct otterlike head, nice shoulder with straight forelegs & standing on good feet. Sound on the move;

3 Metcalfe’s Dandyhow Friendly Fire at Chevinor.

YD (5)

1 Lee’s Tythrop Timepiece, bl/t with correct ticking to harsh outer coat & loose pelt. Well proportioned head. Broader muzzle than many, with a keen expression. Moved best in this class;

2 Dean’s Manorborders Maverick by Tyrian, lacked the drive of 1 when on the move & not so tidy in front. Another bl/t but with rather a thin skin;

3 Jordan & Smith’s Glebeheath Smash N’Grab.

ND (4,1)

1 S Mr Tickle; 2 Dean’s Cedarhill Once Upon A Time, not as balanced as 1, being a bit wider in front & not having quite the reach of neck I would have liked. Movement was not very free striding. Good coat;

3 Horton & Green’s Foxfactor Scotts Briar.

GD (4)

1 Golding’s Earthdog Lanyard by Beaconpike, good head with strong, broad muzzle – too many lacked breadth & appeared snipey. Neat ear, narrow through the ribs, easy enough to span. Coat coming but enough to assess, pelt OK. Moved with purpose & drive;

2 Massen’s Bramblesgate Razle Dazzle, not so settled when on the move. Good shape of head & length of body but not as narrow through the ribs as 1. Coat OK;

3 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Caius.

PGD (9,3)

1 Yeates’ Bristoc Rock The Boat at Bluebabel, balanced but good sized dog. A bit short of coat today, thick pelt. Good head, sufficient neck, moved well with drive from behind. Good solid topline;

2 Alexander’s Glenbucket Whisky Mac, slightly bigger all through than 1, but spannable & correct shape to the ribcage. Good head, & moved well, standing on good feet. I would have liked a bit more muscle behind;

3 Marr’s Redfox Watchman.

LD (19,2)

1 Larner’s Hawcoat Lord George, harsh grizzle/t coat with good, thick skin. Pleasing head with good reach of neck. Good bend of stifle, moved positively with drive from his hindquarters. Noticeably good feet, small, tight & with thick pads;

2 Girling’s Benattivo Betfred, a bit racier in outline than 1 but equally deep in the rib &, so, spannable. Pleasing head, good reach of neck, well angulated shoulder & ribs carried well back. Topline is good & shown in a good coat;

3 Fletcher’s Wadesleia Mr Herriot.

OD (11,1)

A really good class which had insufficient places for those worthy of recognition.

1 Hall & Ellis’ Ch Brackenfell Bok To Bach, found this a well balanced dog, nicely put together. He has a fairly broad skull & a good eye. Good reach of neck & pleasing shoulder. Deep, narrow body with ribs carried well back. Well constructed in hindquarters & carrying good muscle. He moved freely & positively with a long stride, drive & tracked up well. Shown in the best of coats & has a thick pelt. I felt that he was truly ‘fit for function’ & very pleased to later learn that he was made RBIS. CC & BOB;

2 Privezentseva’s Rus/Svk/Rom Ch Stellar Rover Akko, he stands over quite a lot of ground & has everything in the right place. Good otter head with correct ears dropping close to the cheek. Nice length of neck, good shoulders flowing into a good topline. Today I thought he moved a little closer behind than expected. RCC;

3 James & Dickinson’s Ch Badgerholme Epsom Jet.

MPB (9)

1 Hamilton’s Bruador Girl at Cromlechs, smart baby, well balanced & moved well both in front & behind. Neat feminine head & nice neck set into well angulated shoulders. Good coat. Will be interested to see how she develops as she matures;

2 Bryant’s Stowthorney Make A Memory, bl/t with good head with neat ears. Narrow, fairly long body with good topline & tailset. Coat of correct texture & density. Not the same freedom of movement behind as 1;

3 North’s Stowthorney Miss Chief by Northborders.

PB (9)

1 Parkes’ Clevepark Dazzle, quite a well proportioned head for a young bitch. Narrow body, ribs carried well back & good bone. Very good construction in hindquarters which allowed her to move with drive. BPB & BP;

2 Woollacott’s Earthtaw Groundsel in Tufterslodge, there is a bit more substance to her than 1. Good head & very pleasing build to the forequarters though not the reach of neck of 1. She didn’t move with the drive of the winner today but they all come on at different rates;

3 Ruth’s Hemlockstone Diana at Bowdencloud.

JB (19,1)

1 Higham’s Comberdown Stitch, strong headed bitch, broad skull & strong, short muzzle. Good topline & tailset. Well balanced in the hand, not too heavy in bone & of a size & shape that would allow her to work anywhere. First class coat. RCC;

2 Spencer’s Ploughdown Persephone, liked this one a lot. Good head & neck. Stood on good feet. Correct length to the body with nice tuck up, showing raciness. Good coat & skin & she moved true;

3 Pickering’s Picer Aimee Vilbert.

YB (13,1)

1 Sansom’s Tarkaswell Doctors Orders, very well balanced with no exaggeration. Pleasing head & ear with feminine neck. Deep enough in chest but free in the shoulder. Well angulated hindquarters & moved true, with drive, strode out well & tracked up;

2 Wright’s Borderexpress Miss Potter, neat head with a good eye & correct, balanced, reach of neck. Good topline & narrow front. Not quite the animation of 1;

3 Lee’s Tythrop Turn Back Time.

NB (4,1)

1 Roderick’s Benattivo Good News for Barterhound, pleasing head & reach of neck. Shown in correct double coat & in good condition;

2 S Make A Memory.

GB (8,2)

1 Armstrong’s Carrickfarm Mara, smaller than many – able to get anywhere when working. Keen expression, narrow body, good shoulder & straight forelegs. Moved well, with purpose;

2 Fulker’s Lady Mary of Foxpaw, a size bigger than 1, but well balanced & with a good coat. Good length to the body & correct topline. Moved well once she had settled;

3 Taylor’s Picer Angelica.

PGB (12,2)

1 B Miss Potter;

2 Wilson’s Olderhill Malvena, another with a neat head in balance with her build. Good shoulder construction & narrow enough through the body. Good tuck up to the loin. Moved with drive from behind;

3 Haughton’s Chorbeck Snow Angel.

LB (15,2)

1 Johnson’s Benattivo Best Bet Karison, a grizzle/t of well balanced proportions with a good head & reach of neck. Moved well, good length of stride & has a good bend of stifle & broad thighs carrying good muscling. Ribs are carried well back & correct tailset. Another shown in the best of coats. CC;

2 Larner’s Hawcoat Forget Me Not, very feminine, but strong enough. Easy to span, ribs carried well back & racy hindquarters. Moved well & shown in good coat;

3 Hall & Ellis’ Beaconpike Night Sky at Brackenfell.

OB (10,2)

1 Lowry’s Ravenside Time Passes, very well presented with a good head & pleasing reach of neck into a sloping shoulder. Ribs carried well back. Easily spanned. She stands on good feet, moves true & with drive from behind, tracking up well;

2 Gregory’s Remony Winter’s Diamond, very close up 2nd. Not quite the scope of 1 but well balanced with a neat head. Good reach of neck which flows into well laid back shoulders. Correct length to the body & well built hindquarters allowing her to move with drive;

3 Higham’s Comberdown Thistle.
