BORDER PAIGNTON 15 Judge: Miss D Swales BEST OF BREED : 1240 DEAN Mrs K A Tyrian Outlaw BORDER JUDGE PAIGNTON 15 Border Terriers My thanks to the secretary & committee for inviting me to judge at this most enjoyable show & to my two extremely efficient stewards, Felicity Snook & Lady Elain Macdonald, who kept the ring flowing smoothly. I am grateful to the exhibitors for a good entry including some very nice Borders & some promising youngsters. Overall mouths were good with strong, clean teeth & correct bites except for one overshot. Skins were an improvement on my last judging appointment, the majority being thick & loose but I do not like the tendency to strip coats out leaving little evidence of a harsh, dense coat. Remembering that a Border is ‘essentially a working Terrier’ it concerns me that there are a number being shown that really do not measure up to that description both in jacket & the lack of drive & ability to cover the ground when moving. These comments do not apply to my winners & I was so pleased to find many that really measure up to most points in the Standard. MPD (4) 1 BP & PG3, Irving’s Dandyhow Galloping Gourmet, good in all breed respects, excellent coat, lovely ‘otter head’ with keen eye. Needed time to settle when moving but once he did showed really good movement which strengthened each time I saw him; 2 Pile’s Moleschamber Dalrymple, good front & shoulder. Moved well; 3 Jackson & Dugdale’s Kirkbyvalley Silent Storm. PD (3) 1 Dean’s Navy Seal by Tyrian, workmanlike appearance. Covered ground when moving engaging hindquarters. Good coat & pelt; 2 Fryer’s Irton Man, very like 1 but did not settle quite so well. On another day these two could change places & I shall follow their future showing careers. Interested to see that they are by my BOB & BV respectively; 3 Brewster & Green’s Stowthorney Mr Tickle. JD (2) 1 Ramus’ Onthill Aramis, good outline with correct tailset. Moved steadily on nice tight feet. Correct mouth with strong teeth. Good coat; 2 Erriksopn’s Toftahill New Edition, smart dog. Movement lacked drive. PGD (3) 1 Jackson’s Clipstone Starshine, headed a really lovely class. A balanced dog with excellent attributes who came close in the challenge. Super pelt, good shoulder & lay of rib. Easy to span, moved with drive; 2 Jordan & Smith’s Glebeheath Smash N’ Grab, another very good, workmanlike dog with a pleasing outline & strong movement; 3 Dean’s Manorborders Maverick by Tyrian. LD (10) Another very pleasing class headed by two excellent Borders who were hard to split but my winner displayed more confidence today. 1 CC & BOB, Dean’s Tyrian Outlaw, excelled in all respects. Strong movement, really ground covering, using hindquarters. Very good jacket & the appearance of one that could last all day at work. Loved his Border head & confident expression which gave him the class today; 2 RCC, Horner’s Stineval Napoleon, another top quality Border. Much the same comments as 1 & one I hope to hear more of. Unlucky to meet today; 3 Matthews’ Tojamatt Warlord. OD (12,2a) 1 Squibbs & Barker’s Cobstoneway Lazy River, quality dog with good topline, very pleasing head & moved well with drive; 2 Brewster & Green’s Breckgreen Soldier Blue, nice b/t. Good shoulders. Level topline. Moved true. A bit subdued; 3 Hillman’s Badgerbeck Prototype. VD (7,2) 1 BV, Fryer’s Ch Irton Up Helly Aa, a first class Border with a superb jacket. Confident with eye catching presence; 2 Dean’s Ch Stineval Acerola with Tyrian, similar to 1. Very good on all Border points but not the coat. MPB (2) 1 Stevens’ Cobstoneway Love Song, pleasing pup with correct coat. Good mouth & otter head. Moved well & stood freely; 2 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Domino Candesco, another nice one, close to 1 in most respects but not quite so alert. PB (8,1) A promising class & certainly the first five all looked as though they had the characteristics to work. 1 Moore’s Barden Pussy Galore, well made, confident 10½ months pup. Good shoulders with tail well set on. Moved soundly; 2 Fryer’s Irton Scotch Mist, another very good one with good conformation, excellent coat & true movement; 3 Haydon & Gibbing’s Earthtaw Graceful. JB (13,3) 1 Woolacott’s Earthtaw Groundsel in Tufters Lodge, b/t. Good pelt & coat. Pleasing head. Moved out well. A good type; 2 Ramus’ Argentail Titania by Onthill, another sporting type with good movement & correct head; 3 Morgan’s Blewecourt Carpe Horam. PGB (18,2) 1 Baird’s Tojamatt Debutante for Dowgri, nicely built. Good coat & pleasing head. Stands & moves well maintaining outline; 2 Martin’s Bortino Lady Jane, workmanlike. Moved well covering ground when not being gaited too fast; 3 Nightingale’s Glebeheath Gold’n Girl. LB (14) Good trio headed this class. 1 RCC, Sanson’s Tarkaswell Double Agent, a very good bitch with lovely racy outline. Good pelt, super head. Moved out well & stood & showed freely; 2 Nilsson’s Clipstone Sail Away, another bitch with correct ‘Border’ characteristics & good movement; 3 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Plusjhfours. OB (14,6) 1 CC, Fryer’s Irton Enigma, an excellent Border, super jacket, of type not often seen in the ring today, & a hard, well muscled dog beneath it. Good neck & shoulders, spans, strong hind quarters. Moved very well, with drive & covering ground; 2 Martin’s Bortino Smiling Queen, nice overall shape. Skin good but I would like to see more coat; 3 Nillson’s Multi Ch Borderby’s Kisses Of Fire. VB (4) 1 Stockley’s Rhozzum Keynote with Foxfactor, pleasing head & general shape. Good pelt. Moved well; 2 Taylor’s Lutrabeck Layla, moved & showed well; 3 Small’s Badgerbeck Tree Pipit at Tilmoray. DIANE SWALES |
