BORDER JUDGE RICHMOND 14

Border Terriers

Thanks go to my stewards for making the day run smoothly & to the exhibitors for their enthusiasm for the breed & the sporting way they took my decisions.

Since the hunting bill I’ve been concerned how the breed would keep to the line in the Standard ‘essentially a working terrier’ as the opportunities for work have been reduced & the spin off as to why we require a double coat & the dog to be narrow all through may be lost to some exhibitors who haven’t the opportunity to work or know someone who does or has worked their dogs. There was evidence today that we may have lost sight of the fact that this is a working breed. I’m not suggesting that all Borders should work but that all Borders should be capable to work & those who are closest to the Standard should be able to do the job required of them.

There were a few exhibits with single coats today, look very smart but would soon pay the price on a cold wet winters day if they had to be out in the elements for any length of time. Some exhibits were carrying a little too much weight & quite a number would benefit from a good walk, some with little muscle.

VD

1 Wren & Langdon’s Hoary Morning, nice size grizzle who moved well keeping a level topline. Slightly longer cast than second which tipped the scales in his favour;

2 Freeman & Bolts’s Bolt Tail Jebba, dark grizzle with good double coat & pelt, very pleasing on the move, a close decision.

MPD

1 Holmes’ Barnby Caramel Wafer at Bimandi, confident puppy with pleasing head, narrow all through & correct coat & pelt. Another close decision won on superior showmanship. BP;

2 Thomas’ Raleniro Second Time Around, good head, teeth, coat & pelt. Came to hand well but did not make the most of himself which cost him in a close run battle for 1st.

PD

1 Southam’s Badgerbeck Morgan at Southash, very promising pup, liked his typical Border head. Well put together which showed in his movement, another in good coat. My notes say ‘could be more animated’ hopefully this will come in time;

2 Piles’ Tarkaswell Dr Zhivago, nice sized r/gr, liked his coat & loose pelt, moved well. Preferred the head of first.

JD

1 Golding’s Earthdog Lanyard by Beconpike, dark grizzle with correct head, narrow front & good narrow ribs carried well back. Excels in super double coat & thick pelt. Moved well, lovely level topline & a good bend of stifle. I liked him a good deal;

2 Barrett’s Howthwaite Grainsgill, one I’ve admired from the ringside & I wasn’t disappointed on going over him. Well balanced dog with everything in the right place, moved well which was expected from his build. Unfortunate to meet first in such prime condition.

YD

1 Jackson’s Clipstone Starshine, dark grizzle put down in fine fettle. Typical head, good length of back. Excels in coat & pelt. Nice level topline when stood & he keeps when on the move;

2 Fulker’s Foxpaw Pipps Cross, smaller dog, would have liked more of him. Nice & narrow, good in rib which gained him his place over 3rd.

PGD

1 Carr’s Thorneyburn Peace Pipe at Wreighaugh, lovely headed dog, up on the leg, which I prefer. Straight front, correct in rib & a good coat & pelt. A most typical Border;

2 Waller’s Question Master, another dog with a pleasing head & good coat. Narrow all through, more compact & shorter in back than 1st.

LD

1 Langdon & Wrens’ Dandyhow Douglas Fir, bl/t with the correct coat & ticking. Pleased me with his straight front, narrow in rib & easily spanned. Moved well around the ring;

2 Gregory’s Remony Runrig, very close decision. Nothing to dislike here, r/gr in full coat, correct movement. Lost out to 1st on length of back but that could be due to him carrying a full coat which may have given that impression.

OD

1 Irving’s Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter, what can I add to what has already been said about this dog? He was put down in immaculate order & strode around the ring as if he owned it, which he did. Typical head coat & pelt of the best, moved correctly with great drive & when stood showed a beautiful topline & tailset. Pleased to have had the opportunity of judging him & giving him BOB which he thoroughly deserved;

2 Hall & Ellis’ Brackenfell Bok To Bach, what a disappointment, not in the dog which is one of the best dogs I’ve had the privilege of handling but in the fact he came without any coat, bald. This dog is totally what I want in a Border Terrier & fits my brief perfectly. He has his father’s ring presence which is the icing on the cake as he excels in all departments. I had no hesitation in awarding him the RCC & look forward to seeing him in the ring with his father when more equally matched in coat.

VB

What a lovely class of veterans. Great credit to the owners for keeping the dogs in such good shape.

1 Baxter’s Am/Can/Int Ch Sulan Fancy That, feminine but strong, good head, straight front, narrow ribs easily spanned & a proper jacket & thick pelt. Liked the length of her back & she moved well to complete the picture;

2 Days’ Gameway Cappuccino of Withershins, my notes say similar remarks apply but preferred the longer cast of 1st which made my decision.

MPB

1 Gregory’s Remony Frosted Ivy, dark grizzle with a thick double coat & pelt, narrow all through. Moved well with confidence for one so young;

2 Aldis’ Torryburn Portia, smaller puppy, lovely head & expression, another good coat & pelt. A very narrow puppy, preferred the scope of 1st.

PB

1 Aldis’ Torryburn Cadenza, light grizzle in best of coats. Liked her head, topline & tailset. Pleasing example of the breed;

2 Golding’s Beconpike Venus, super puppy, excels in head, narrow all through as they should be. Coat just coming in, that & the slightly longer cast of 1st made my mind up.

JB

1 Parry’s Glebeheath Maiden Name at Oakyard, tight light grizzle coat, very narrow ribs carried well back. Made a nice picture when standing & on the move accounted for herself well;

2 Roberts’ Smalesmouth Skylark, liked this bitch who strode around the ring driving from her well made hindquarters. A close decision but when pushed I preferred the slightly more narrower 1st.

YB

1 Sansom’s Tarkaswell Double Agent, nice type, correct dark grizzle double coat. Moved well both ways;

2 Roberts’ Smalesmouth Skype, my notes say, loved this blue with the narrowest of ribs but she lost the class as she wasn’t as settled on the move as 1st.

PGB

1 Deans’ Mattedon Farthing for Tyrian, light grizzle well balanced bitch. Very typical of the breed & she moves correctly;

2 Wilson’s Badgerbeck Backchat at Olderhill, another light grizzle in good coat who strode out well around the ring. The overall balance of 1st gave her 1st place.

LB

1 Deans’ Cedarhill Wish Upon A Star, a most pleasing example of the breed. Lovely feminine head & expression, narrow ribs of correct shape carried well back, coat of the best & moved well. Nothing I could find to be critical of this bitch but she is 7/8 of the size I prefer. A quality Border Terrier nonetheless. RCC;

2 Golding’s Beconpike In A Stormm, lovely rich red bitch. Much more my stamp in size. Excellent head, narrow nicely shaped rib, as I like. Another I find hard to criticise but today she lost her topline when standing but pleased to award 2nd place in good company.

OB

1 Brannan & Kelly’s Cedarhill Rising Star at Brankell, Border of the correct size & shape, so well balanced when stood. Best of heads, good shoulder placement, nice length of back, straight narrow front. Pretty much what I look for in a Border bitch. Eventually she moved well when allowed to settle. A pleasure to award her the CC;

2 Levett’s Kyscafter Kestrel, dark grizzle bitch, looked well standing with a lovely topline & tailset. A most typical Border with a strong feminine head which for me is a must. Unfortunately had to bow to 1st who stood out to me on the day.
