BORDER JUDGE RICHMOND 15

Border Terriers

I should like to thank Richmond committee for my invitation to judge Border Terriers. It is quite a while since I judged the breed and so came to it today with a very open mind. I thoroughly enjoyed my day, with the opportunity of going over some very lovely dogs. I had plenty of choice in choosing my winners, and I would thank the exhibitors for bringing their dogs and receiving my decisions sportingly. My Stewards were excellent, keeping everything moving like clockwork.

Veteran D(4,2):

1. Freeman's Bolt Tail Jebba ShCM, 9 yr. old typy dog, in very good jacket, pleasing head proportions, spannable, scored in topline over 2, good tail, moved well. Best Veteran.

2. Channer's Mingrovier Flintstone Chief at Rubyfin, 7 yr. old, not quite the overall quality of 1, and not so strong in quarters, quite pleasing in head properties and showed well.

MPD (2,0): Two pups at very different stages of development in this class,

1. Sentance's Breckgreen Rock or Bust, almost 9 mths. old, quite liked this one, the least mature of the two and without benefit of a full jacket, quite nice head, good mouth, well proportioned body construction, good front but a bit overdone in hind angulation, I felt, at this stage of growth.

2. Gullett's Keebank Withy Hero, 8 months old, and more mature generally than winner but time should help growth to even up, good mouth, in good jacket, but not holding such a typical outline when moving.

PD (2,0):

1. Barrett's Howthwaite Dreams, 11 mths.,thought this young fellow a touch on the large side for a pup but sound & not overdone, head proportions good, well angulated in both front and rear, good bone, shown in good jacket & moving on good feet.

2. Dean's Tyrian Arrowsmith, another 11 month old, nice for size, but moving in a most uneconomical manner maybe was affected by the weather today.

JD (4,0):

Interesting class to judge, with differing types & sizes.

1. Brewster & Green's Stowthorney Mr Tickle, liked this red grizzle dog, just turned a year old, well made all through, good head proportions, strong muzzle, well angulated in shoulder and stifle, spannable, in good jacket with thick pelt, best mover in the class.

2. Clark's Gameway McVitie JW, 17 mths. old, close up to winner but not quite presenting the overall picture as 1. in profile, but a nice dog nevertheless.

3. Ramus' Onthill Aramis.

YD (3,1):

1. Brewster & Green's Breckgreen's Soldier Blue, 23 mths. old blue/tan, in lovely harsh jacket, well made and balanced, spannable, well angulated fore & aft, good neck into topline, good tail, easy economical mover, covering the ground well.

2. Sneddon's Kersfell Cool River, 15 mth. old dog, lovely standing but his movement let him down today.

PGD (7,0):

1. Jackson & Jackson's Clipstone Starshine, a dog with quality all through, well made and balanced, typical head and expression, good angulation in shoulder & rear, spannable, all topped with a very good dark grizzle jacket, went well on good feet.

2. Hollingsbee's Otterwood Caius JW ShCM, blue/tan, another nicely balanced well constructed dog in very good harsh coat, good bone, typical Border head, went well but lacked the sparkle of winner.

3. Holmes' Barnby Caramel Wafer at Bimandi JW ShCM.

LD (6,1):

1. Thomas' Daluce King of Emotion, what a pleasing dog this red grizzle was, balanced all through, correct conformation, good bone, head, neck, topline proportions pleasing, stands himself well and moved accordingly, very close for higher honours whilst in very strong competition today.

2. Barrett's Howthwaite Grainsgill, different type, stockier than winner, but looked a workmanlike sort, as a Border should, would have preferred a stronger muzzle but mouth OK, in good jacket with thick pelt, moved well both ways.

3. Stevens' Cobstoneway Ocean Sunrise.

OD (8,1):

1. Hall & Ellis' Ch Brackenfell Bok to Bach JW, up to size but plenty of quality about this dog, body proportions correct with good angulation both ends, liked his head & expression, very well presented in harsh red grizzle coat, stands himself very well, an excellent showman both standing and on the move, CC & BOB, pleased to see he went G2 later in the day.

2. Hunt's Ottaswell Palamedes, although a different type to winner this one had plenty of appeal for me, close up but lost out on coat quality as he was still waiting for a new jacket, good headed with well constructed body with good angulation, neck, topline & tailset all pleasing and in balance, moved well. RCC.

3. Girling's Benattivo Betfred.

Veteran B (7,2):

1. Day's Gameway Cappuccino of Withershins ShCM, 10 year old red grizzle bitch of handy size, best overall in this class for correct conformation & movement, pleasing head qualities with good eye & ear. Moved well.

2. Provost & Hopkins' Argentail Bucks Fizz, another ten year-old, blue bitch in good jacket, moving quite well.

3. Baxter's Am Can Int Ch Sulan Fancy That.

MPB (3,0):

1. Brannan & Kelly's Brankell Double Denim, just a baby of 6 mths., but setting the standard with the best movement in the class here today, nicely put together with lovely head / expression, topped by a very good jacket, just needs to mature now, but very promising at this stage.

2. May & Whisker's Thistlestone Rhyme N Reason, well, constructed 7 mth. old red bitch, balanced with good angulation both in shoulder and stifle, moved well.

3. Brewster & Green's Breckgreen Song Sung Blue.

PB (5,0):

1. Pinkham's Puzzlers Hope Full Hattie, very pleasing b/t 10 mth. old bitch with good body construction & balance, typical head with feminine expression from correct eye & ear, with neck flowing into correct topline and tail, presented in good jacket, moving well round the ring. Best Puppy.

2. Medhurst's La Senza, red/grizzle bitch, typical in head & ears, in lovely jacket, well made & balanced throughout, very responsive to her young handler.

3. Barrett's Howthwaite Gold Dust.

JB (4,0):

1. Ramus' Argentail Titania By Onthill, 16 mths. red grizzle bitch, presented in excellent jacket, well balanced all through in conformation, I just liked the whole picture, for me a very pleasing Border Terrier, moved well looking as though she could keep going all day without tiring. RCC.

2. Girling's Benattivo Good Friday, very similar to winner in most respects, same age but not quite the maturity & confidence in the ring today.

3. Taylor & Taylor's Clydebeck Solitaire.

YB (7,1):

1. Sanson's Tarkaswell Doctor's Orders JW, just under 2 years old & stood out in this class for me, presented in good order, harsh r/ gr coat, & with everything in the right place and in the correct amount, moved & showed well.

2. Parkes' Clevepark Dazzle, 16 mth. old r/gr very similar in most respects to winner, just not quite so eye-catching, shown in correct jacket & moving well.

3. Pearce's Bimandi's Bellissima.

PGB (14,1):

1. Dean's Tyrian Fifth Element, handy-sized bitch, well put together, good conformation & general balance, pleasing head qualities, not overdone in any area, enough angulation for economical movement.

2. Baxter's Sulan Strictly Blues Dancin', well-made b/t, close up with lovely typical outline, pleasing head proportions, good neck, topline & tail, shown in good jacket.

3. Baird's Tojamatt Debutante For Dowgri ShCM.

LB (8,0):

Having seen quite a few exhibits in earlier classes with poor movement it was a pleasure to judge this class where not one exhibit displayed poor front or rear movement.

1. Bladen's Emblehope Dance And Dance JW, good headed bitch with typical expression, well-balanced outline in profile, well angulated at both ends, good topline ending with pleasing tail, altogether a good bitch which moved very well to win this class.

2. Samson 's Tarkaswell Double Agent JW ShCM, dark red grizzle bitch here which had a lot to like, typical outline in profile with everything in good proportion, slightly smaller than winner, but another good bitch moving well.

3. Parry's Glebeheath Maiden Name At Oakyard.

OB (10,3):

This was a most interesting class to judge with so many pleasing bitches.

1. Jackson & Jackson's Ch Cobstoneway Moon River At Clipstone, this bitch really took my eye, lovely head proportions with correct eye & ear, neck of good length sloping into correct topline down to a correctly set & carried tail, matching angulation both fore & aft, excellent pelt and lovely thick jacket, spannable, with the complete dog moving so well round the ring with style. I was delighted to award her the CC.

2. Cobby's Pops Blackcurrant Fizz, well proportioned blue & tan, balanced in body construction, good for size, generally fitted the Standard very well being typical in all departments, shown in good harsh jacket.

3. Dean's Cedarhill Wish Upon A Star JW.
