BORDER JUDGE RICHMOND 19

In this day of mentoring I make no apologies for restating the main criteria I apply in my judging. The standard states that the Border Terrier is essentially a working terrier and it should be able to follow a horse. Therefore I require a dog deep in chest but well ribbed back providing ample heart and lung room which will enable it to travel and be present when, and if, required to flush the quarry, narrow throughout and spannable to enable it to go to ground, head like that of a otter with strong muzzle and big teeth to help protect from any attack of the quarry, harsh double coat and thick skin as protection from the elements whilst underground or on the moors, good temperament to mix with the hounds and able to be handled as necessary. I felt that most of my winners met this criteria and my report concentrates on the dogs distinguishing points that resulted in its placing. However, no dog is perfect, and that is where the judgement comes in and remember opinions from the ringside do not always hold up on closer inspection.

VD (3)

1 Goddard & Goddard’s Ch Kgills King Of Swing At Awbrooksky. Overall meets the standard well but would prefer more moderate rear quarters. In good coat and shows well.

2 Waller’s Question Master. Like this old favourite, generally well made, just preferred front assembly of first.

3 Parton’s Colmarel Bobbin.

SBD (2)

1 Haugh’s Skyeisla Blue Reflection. Nice size blue and tan of good conformation that moves well for age, but just a baby.

2 Cox’s River Boy. Three year old in good harsh coat, but up to size.

MPD (4)

1 Spafford’s Reedwater Doc Holliday By Dassett. All babies but all showed promise, first most forward with good head and expression and moved well and in good coat.

2 Haugh’s Skyeisla Blue Reflection.

3 Lowe & Miles’ Brumborder Jump Ship To Rockslade.

PD (2)

1 Haydon & Gibbings’ Earthtaw Keep Smiling. Blue and tan that moves well, good shoulder, topline and rear quarters, would like to see the coat break. 2 Taylor’s Barkanellie Blackadder. Preferred the head of this one but did not move as well.

JD (10, 4)

1 Girling’s Benattivo Jack Jones. Blue and tan, good head with moderately broad skull, strong muzzle, correct length of neck, flowing top line, straight front, correct ribbing and racey rear quarters all enabling him to move with ease, well presented.

2 Clark & Southam’s Southash Blue Jasper. Liked the make and shape of this one but would prefer slightly less of him, in ok coat, moved quite well.

3 Ramus’ Onthill One And Only.

YD (5)

1 Mooney’s Chesterton In Focus. This one showed all the correct attributes and shown in harsh double coat and moved out well to take the class, considered in the challenge.

2 Burgess’ Grizzledale War Cry. Overall well constructed and moved quite well, preferred head and expression of first.

3 Sneddon’s Glen Mara Oh Viedo At Kersfell (Imp Fra).

PGD (10)

1 May & Whisker’s Thistlestone Glenfiddich. Stood away for correct construction presenting good otter type head and excellent body outline with no exaggeration has good second thigh and let down hocks enabling easy ground covering movement topped by harsh double coat. Another considered in the challenge.

2 Burrell’s Eneonith Marbles. Similar but not the underline and ribbing of first, but good head front and rear quarters, moved ok.

3 Small’s Howthwaite Gentil Duke At Tilmoray.

LD (6, 2)

1 Hughes & Kendrick’s Chatmoss Bullet Tooth Tony JW. Disappointing class both first and second shown out of coat, preferred head and make and shape of first.

2 Ramus’ Dallas Dhu By Onthill. Not moving so well.

3 O’Connor’s Modann Wilson.

OD (8)

1 Clark’s Gameway Mcvitie JW. Class of the day, a line-up of five super dogs all covering the ground. This one fits the standard so well, super otter head with good expression, big teeth, correct length of neck into well laid shoulders, flowing top line, correct ribbing back into strong loin, good second thigh and let down hocks allowing him to move with ease and drive presented in harsh double coat and fit condition. CC and BOB.

2 Docwra’s Ch Bandicoot Doc Martin. Another lovely dog with similar great attributes, slightly more rangy than first but close up. RCC.

3 Guvercin’s Ch Glebeheath Just A Gigolo.

VB (2, 1)

1 Cobby’s Pops Blackcurrant Fizz. Nice size blue and tan generally well made would prefer a stronger muzzle. SBB (1) 1 Aldous’ Twigglestone Serendipite. Needs more time to develop in head, moved ok, but could tighten in front, out of coat.

MPB (4)

1 Wright’s Totherend Myrna Loy. All babies, but these sisters were more mature, preferred movement of first but the head of second, generally well constructed, not in the best of coats.

2 Wright’s Totherend Greta Garbo.

3 Judge’s Chesterton Notre Dame With Plushcourt.

PB (6)

1 Fleming’s Brankell Countdown To Flegato. This one fits the standard well and her correct front assembly and rear quarters allow free ground covering movement, shown in good double coat. BP.

2 Matthews’ Tojamatt Ann Brandreth. Similar type and well constructed just preferred head of first.

3 Clark & Southam’s Southash Kiss Me Kate.

JB (11, 1)

1 Peacock’s Ragatam Essence JW. This one stood away for type, make and shape, typical head and moved so well with reach and drive, in harsh coat, considered in the challenge just felt there was too much of her for her age.

2 Matthews’ Ebffiniau Bluebell Before Summer At Tojamatt. Another one well made and put together from this kennel and moved out well, not quite the coat or head of first.

3 Stockley’s Foxfactor Fire Cracker.

YB (7, 2)

1 Jordan-Smith’s Ravenside Marsha At Jordith. Well made throughout with otter head, good length of back and quarters, a tad deep in chest, moved well and in harsh grizzle coat.

2 Wingrave’s Rhozzum Thisbe. Blue and tan, well constructed and moved well not the head or coat of first.

3 Jones’ Rhozzum Truffle At Otterholme.

PGB (7, 1)

1 Ramsay’s Arodella Song Sung Blue. Well made blue and tan with good head and expression, length of body and moved with drive, coat ok.

2 Greenway’s Foxcourt Amber Spirit Gambler. Deeper in chest but otherwise well made with good head and moved ok.

3 Anscombe’s Gameway French Fancy Avec Orangebox.

LB (5)

1 Service’s Marsirdan Jemima Puddle. This bitch is a pleasure to go over from her super otter head with keen expression which is difficult to ignore, correct length neck into well laid shoulders, straight front, ideal depth of rib carried well back into short strong loin, slightly rounded quarters providing power and short hocks to drive for sound ground covering movement, red grizzle coat of good texture but could be a little better prepared to effect. CC.

2 Fulker’s Foxpaw Revelation JW. Liked this one as a puppy perhaps hasn’t come up on the leg as expected but otherwise is a fine example of the breed, shown in harsh double coat and moved quite well.

3 Mooney’s Chesterton Boutique.

OB (7)

1 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Paint By Numbers. Good size and well made throughout with good head, moving so well to win class, coat of harsh texture just coming to its best. Preferred that keen expression of the CC winner in the challenge but close up RCC.

2 Guvercin’s Ch Glebeheath Fingers On Lips. Just more of this one but so well made and presented in good coat and condition did not cover the ground quite so well as first.

3 Brewster & Green’s Byrewick Valentine.
