BORDER SKC AUGUST 14 Judge(s): MR E J HOUSTON Border Terriers My first appointment at this level. My thanks to the society for inviting me & to my two very efficient stewards, Lorrraine & Barbara, who kept things moving. I was very pleased with both my line-ups & feel that my main winners were excellent examples of the breed. Many dogs were sporting dense, tweedy jackets but, as is always the case, some were lacking in coat & this did influence some of the placings. Mouths were good & only one dog was unspannable. On the downside, size is an issue & some of the minor puppies are already up to size. Front movement could be better in a number of exhibits & a few were carrying too much weight. My sincere thanks to all those who entered & afforded me the privilege of going over their dogs. MPD (7) Challenging start to the day. Some of these pups will undoubtedly do better with a bit more confidence & maturity, others may end up too big. 1 Pickering’s Picer Just Joey, very smart grizzle of 7 months of age. Head developing well with correct bite & large teeth. Well balanced with good angulation front & rear. Well shaped & set on tail. Super coat & pelt. Moved well in profile but front movement could be tighter. BPD; 2 Duxbury’s Ridgebow Rifleman, close up to first. Also 7 months grizzle & with a strong head & correct bite. Good coat & pelt, well angulated & with good tailset. Moved soundly; 3 Curtis’ Cedarhill Time Flies Matamba. PD (5) 1 Armstrong’s Ploughdown Plato, bl/t, at 7½ months this youngster doesn’t want to grow on. Rangy pup with a lot to like. Good topline, typical in head, good length of neck. Narrow front, well shaped tail & moved well on neat feet. Better angulated than second; 2 Higham’s Comberdown Reiver, almost 10 months & a shade larger than first. Strong head with a neat ear. Thick pelt & a good coat. He has a narrow front & neat feet. Would like a touch more rear angulation but he moves soundly; 3 Wildey’s Shiftyfox Roll The Dice. JD (4) 1 Fletcher’s Wadesleia Mr Herriot, light grizzle. Very promising young dog who was seriously considered in the challenge. Lovely head with good bite, good length of neck, narrow front & good feet. Moderate angulation front & rear, good tailset & shape. Immaculately presented in a good double coat & sound on the move; 2 Barrett’s Howthwaite Grainsgill, dark grizzle with a typical head & dark eye. Narrow throughout & moving well he is well balanced & was shown in a correct double coat. Tailset good; 3 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Caius. YD (2) 1 Lothian’s Topaz Design, nice red dog of good size shown in super, dense coat with loose pelt. Masculine head with neat ear & good strength of foreface. Well balanced, good tail & sound on the move; 2 Johnston’s Joncroft Moss Trooper, grizzle of similar type to the first. Another good, sound dog who was easily spanned but couldn’t match the winner for depth of coat. ND (2) 1 Lorraine’s Raleniro Second Time Around, 7 months grizzle. Very much a baby but showing potential. Head developing OK, good bite. Nice size, well angulated, neat feet & fine for coat & pelt. A little ‘bum high’ at the moment; 2 Appleby-Jones’ Shiftyfox Blue Moon, 11 month old bl/t. Much more strongly made dog. Typical head with good mouth. Well balanced, good body length. Could be a little narrower in front. Bit erratic on the move. PGD (9,1a) 1 Gosling’s Akenside Cumin, nice, unexaggerated grizzle of good size. Masculine head with correct mouth & well set ears. Good neck, well ribbed back. Super coat & pelt, nice tail. Easily spanned & free-moving. Maturing well; 2 Carr’s Thorneyburn Peace Pipe at Wreighaugh, rangier grizzle. Lovely head, well balanced, very good coat & pelt. Narrow, neat feet & correct tailset. Sound mover; 3 Dakers’ Otterston Arran Ranger. LD (9,1) Good class. 1 Duxbury’s Keycharm Phantom by Ridgebow, grizzle. Strong headed dog with good bite & neat, well set ears. Super coat & pelt, well off for bone & good feet. Well balanced & free-moving. Well made but spannable. Strong contender; 2 Dickinson & James’ Badgerholme Epsom, rangier bl/t. Another quality dog with good head & a dark eye. Narrow front, correct coat & pelt, nice tail. Well angulated hindquarters which produced driving movement. A natural showman; 3 Palmer’s Comitis California. OD (8,1) Super class, any of the placed dogs would have been deserving of a CC. 1 Spencer’s Ch Cobstoneway River Magic, very impressive, masculine dog, who, at 5 years old, is fully mature & still in his prime. Immaculately presented. Lovely head with punishing bite, well set ears & good expression. Well angulated front & rear, nice body length, well set tail. Well off for bone, super pelt & good double coat. Very sound on the move with good drive from the rear. Spannable. MPB (9,1) 1 Gregory’s Remony Frosted Ivy, leggy grizzle of 8 months. Well grown & well balanced pup with feminine head & good mouth. Narrow throughout she has a super coat & pelt, neat feet, well shaped tail. Beautifully presented & well handled. Very sound movement for a youngster which is where she scored over the dog puppy. BPB & BP; 2 Pickeriong’s Picer Aimee Vilbert, another attractive grizzle also well presented & shown in good coat though not the density of the winner. Promising head, good length of neck, straight front, nice bodylength. Well shaped tail; 3 Morton-Shaw’s Fehmarn Molwynbach.
