BORDER WELKS 13 Judge(s): MRS JANE ROBERTS Border Terriers My first appointment at this level & I was grateful for being given the privilege to go over your dogs. I thoroughly enjoyed my day & fully appreciated the opportunity to judge some high quality exhibits. Some decisions were difficult & places could change on another day. On a positive note, temperaments were good as were mouths & feet. On the down side, there were not enough exhibits that moved with drive & there were several with wide fronts – these are faults that would impact on the dog’s ability to work. VD (3) 1 Wallace’s Ch Hobholt Harrier, rising 7½ years & still in wonderful condition, top quality grizzle who presented a balanced outline, good head with strong muzzle & big teeth, excellent construction, good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, straight narrow front with good length to body & ribs carried well back, spannable, strong through loin into racy hindquarters, excellent double jacket & pelt, excelled in movement as he has a long economical stride & moved true coming & going. CC; 2 Moffatt & Zech’s Towden Storm Driver at Laurelton, enjoying his day out, likeable 8 years grizzle in good condition, good head & expression. Although shorter coupled than 1, he presented a pleasing outline & moved out soundly on well angulated hindquarters. Good coat & pelt; 3 Freeman’s Bolttail Jebba. MPD (5) 1 Sneddon’s Kersfell Chorister, 8 months light grizzle, still very much a baby. Liked him for size & balance over the others in this class, promising head with nicely shaped dark eye, good reach of neck into well angulated shoulders, liked his length of body & rib shape, easily spanned. Movement was erratic at times, but this should improve with maturity. BPD 2 Martin’s Bortino Red Emperor, confident grizzle of 7 months, well grown & more mature than 1, good head & expression, narrow bodylines, good rear angulation, nice double jacket & decent pelt. Movement was erratic, but covered the ground well in profile when settled; 3 Mudd’s Breckgreen Blue Steel Ironfield. PD (1) 1 Stevens’ Cobstoneway Ocean Sunrise, rising 9 months bl/t with masculine head & correct bite, up to size for his age but I liked his narrow front, shoulder assembly & good length of rib. Moved soundly off really good feet, well presented, good double jacket. JD (12) Two very good young dogs headed this class. 1 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Uncle Fester, I really liked this masculine 15 months grizzle/t dog, beautifully presented in hard fit condition, presented a balanced picture, very good head with moderate width of skull, strong muzzle, very good set of teeth, well constructed with lovely reach of neck into narrow shoulders, excellent length & shape to rib, so easily spanned, level topline & tailset, well angulated hindquarters, evidence of double jacket & thick pelt, moved soundly to take this class & RCC; 2 Guvercin’s Glebeheath Jump The Gun, handy sized 15 months bl/t, another quality exhibit. Presented a balanced outline & excelled in head, goo reach of neck into narrow shoulders & straight front, very good topline, tailset, legs & feet, harsh double jacket, covered the ground really well in profile & accurately coming & going; 3 Wallace’s Hobholt Hallmark. YD (6) 1 Larner’s Hawcoat Lord George, upstanding light grizzle of 18 months, really good head with well placed eye & strong jaw, loved his expression, very good reach of neck into narrow shoulders, ribs carried well back, level topline & tailset, well angulated hindquarters, strode out well with a long accurate stride. Considered for top honours; 2 Duxbury’s Keycharm Phantom by Ridgebow, masculine grizzle dog, well constructed throughout, strong head with big teeth, good reach of neck into well angulated shoulders, good length of rib, level topline into good tailset, really good deep feet, good thick pelt with plenty of undercoat. Not much evidence of top coat here. Moved OK, but not quite the movement of 1 3 Hunt’s Ottaswell Palamedes. PGD (10) 1 Wright’s Hobholt Hi Roller, likeable type, good head & expression, balanced outline with good shoulders, narrow body, good topline & tailset, in good coat & condition, moved out well on a long stride, preferred length of body over 2; 2 Rumsam’s Saygo of Hassage, fit looking dark grizzle, well proportioned masculine head with keen expression & strong muzzle, narrow bodylines, straight front, racy hindquarters, in full coat with plenty of harsh top coat & a good thick pelt; 3 Ramus’ Onthill Amaretto. LD (18) This was a difficult class to judge with a variety of type & size. 1 Fryer’s Irton Morse Code, r/grizzle who won this class on overall balance & shape, masculine head with strong muzzle & big teeth, good reach of neck into well angulated shoulders, good length of body, well angulated hindquarters which he used to advantage on the move, good feet, good quality double jacket with crisp top coat, very fit, moved well from all angles on a loose lead which is something of a rarity these days; 2 Larner’s Hawcoat Blue Bertie, smaller type to 1 but has lots to offer. Outgoing dark grizzle with a well shaped head & large teeth, good reach of neck into straight front, well laid back ribs into strong loin & well angulated hindquarters, sports an excellently shaped tail, very well presented in really good double jacket with thick pelt, shown to advantage; 3 Yates’ Okarito Omar. OD (10) 1 McPherson’s Brumberhill Blue Tempest, quality bl/t exhibit, very good otter head, I really liked his overall construction, very good reach of neck into narrow shoulders & straight front, good length of body, presented a lovely balanced outline with good front & rear angulation, moved accurately from all angles. Seemed to lose enthusiasm in the challenge; 2 Bailey’s Ch Grindevald In Full Cry, rising 5 years & still looking very good, athletic masculine grizzle/t with very good head & expression, well constructed throughout, presents a balanced picture, in very good condition, thick pelt & evidence of a tight harsh top coat on its way in, moved very well from all angles. Just preferred the overall balance of 1. GCD 1 Gordon’s Tarkatale Midnight Memory, dark grizzle in very good condition, good head & expression, good length of rib, well angulated hindquarters, moved well, very good coat with harsh top coat; 2 Westland’s Renaissance Rhododendron, grizzle, ranger than 1. Appeals for his overall shape & construction, good head with big teeth, narrow bodylines. A little unsettled on the move & not much coat here which is where he lost out to 1. VB (3) T Two lovely bitches. Credits to their owners. 1 Speake & Tart’s Aurora’s Popcorn, 7 years grizzle looking in good form, lovely feminine head & expression, has retained a straight front, narrow bodylines, ribs well laid back, in excellent coat, moved freely; 2 Moore’s Clipstone Tweed at Bramblequest, 7½ years bitch in lovely condition, good head & expression, well placed ears. Not as narrow through the body nor as much coat here as 1, but moved soundly from all angles. MPB (12) This was a lovely class to judge & there were some promising puppies who were unplaced.
