ENGLISH BULL JUDGE DRIFFIELD 19

Firstly, my thanks to Driffield Society for the kind invitation to judge, the weather was unusually glorious which made all the difference to this well-run show. Onto the exhibitors, thank you for their support on the day, it was a pleasure to go over your animals. Overall, presentation was good with most of the exhibits being shown in fit condition which makes such a difference to a breed which is muscular by definition. Temperaments were excellent which again is a credit to the breeders and owners. Finally, not forgetting my two stewards today who did such a sterling job in keeping everything in check.

PD (1)

1 Lewis’ Heavy Metal Thunder, strongly made young dog who at 9 months already is very much a Bull Terrier. Super strong head with the keenest expression, good ear set, good bite with a few misplaced incisors. Really good bone for size and the body to match, although a little loose in front. He moved ok although not fluidly as he was interested in everything around him. He is full of life and no doubt will develop into a masculine dog with time. Made his handler work hard today but good effort. BP.

JD (2)

1 Igo’s Javarke Aesir, well-marked Tri colour. He has strong head but could benefit from more profile and keener expression, one tight canine. Good neck and straight front with a short back and decent hindquarters. He moved straight in the front and closer behind. A little unsettled on the move but a smart compact dog nicely put together and shown in good condition.

2 Pleasants’ Bruneye Bismark For Casodon, completely different in type to 1. Just out of puppy this big upstanding B/W has an abundance of bone for his age. Strong head, mouth fault, could be shorter in back, strong quarters. His movement was a little difficult to assess. He is still a big puppy at heart and found the whole experience fun today, such a lovely character in the ring. Well done to his handler. Just preferred the overall compactness of 1.

PGD (6,1)

1 Murphy’s’ Chavez Diabelskie A Widgets Bull At Katroyden, there is lots to like about this young dog that you really have to go over to appreciate. Big upstanding well mark Tri, he has a super strong head, completely turned and filled without a hint of exaggeration topped off with a good mouth. Lovely keen expression, muscular neck into well placed shoulder, visible broad forechest, straight front with super bone throughout. Strong body, good length of back holding his topline on the move, just carrying his tail a little on the high side. His quarters are angulated, muscular and he was shown in fit condition. He needed the big ring today to settle and get into his stride and move properly. A true male who, in my opinion with some further ring training and practise can challenge further. Good effort by his handler. Delighted to award him RCC.

2 Dyson’s Tawnbarr Battlestar, 16 month old white with eye mark, well-made dog who when standing is four square and nicely balanced. Long elegant head which ideally needs more profile, good mouth, ears could be better set. Good bone, nice feet, short back with well set tail. Strong hindquarters with decent bend of stifle. Initially a little unsettled on the move but eventually moved well both ways. Not quite the overall masculinity and head of 1.

3 Dodd’s Bluepoint Patchogue.

LD (4)

1 Lewis & Sarich’s Afanbull Gorgeous George, smart compact white dog with brindle ears marks. Beautiful head piece, ears, lovely expression and good mouth, strong neck, could be slightly better in shoulder, nice front. Super outline standing with a lovely short back, strong body with good spring of rib, nice underline, short coupled into strong hindquarters and well set tail. Bone and substance to match his size. Moved well coming and going. A quality dog with good proportions and type for his size. Calmly and quietly handled to get the best of this dog.

2 Parkington’s Olliebrad Some Might Say, attractive quality well marked B/W. Lovely classical head, good mouth, neck and front. Good length of back, shapely body and good quarters, moved ok in front and slightly closer behind. A little more up on the leg than 1. At 15 months old this young dog should only get better as he continues to mature. Presented and handled well. A close decision between these two lovely dogs, in the end I just preferred the strength of head and compactness of 1.

3 Dodgson & O’Brien’s Bobuddy Word Up.

OD (7,3)

1 Paterson’s Golitha Generationx, this dog didn’t put a foot wrong for the entire time he was in the ring. Upstanding white with a red ear mark. Lovely unexaggerated long filled head, well place ears, good expression and mouth. Strong shapely neck, correct shoulders, straight front, developed strong body, topline and tail set. He stood squarely and looked completely balanced at all times having the correct amount of bone for his size. He moved and covered the ground well both ways and at just over two years old this dog has matured into an elegant, quality bull terrier. He was presented and handled beautifully today never taking his eyes off his handler, they both are a credit to each other. He thoroughly deserved his win today and the dog CC.

2 Connolly & Gourley’s Ir Ch Rabram Real Deal For Bullfortis, a different type to 1, really attractive well marked B/W, which is always good to see. A strongly build dog throughout with lots of bone and substance for his size. Strong, wide head, would like slightly more profile, good mouth. Muscular neck, strong shoulders and straight front and wide forechest. His body is short, well ribbed and compact. His rear quarters are strong with decent bend of stifle. A little unsettled on the move but got there once his handler got him going. He was well presented and a good effort by his handler. A good-looking dog who at 4 years old is now mature and full of type, unfortunately he just didn’t have the zest and style today of 1.

3 Newberry & Mill’s Teirwgwyn Phantom Jester For Ukusa.

JB (4)

1 Welsby’s Tawnbarr Diamond Ice Dragon Avec Sherrywells, a super smart young terrier type bitch who easily catches the eye. Really lovely long filled feminine head with two eye marks, her ears and eye are both well placed giving the right expression. Arched neck into shoulders which could be slightly better, good bone, nice feet. Her body is compact, short, shapely, good topline which she held on the move, her tail is short and well set although she tends to carry it high. She has enough rear angulation and moved ok, she is always busy and on the go being the consummate showgirl. She was presented in gleaming condition and is a credit to her owner, well done.

2 McDonagh & McLeish’s Ukusa Independance Day At Irazistabull, quality young B/B bitch, different type to 1. Her head has lots of turn and fill with a correct good mouth. Really good overall shape to her body, nice neck and front. She stands square and has good length of back for her size. Her hind quarters are parallel when standing, she perhaps could do with a little more rear angulation and strength which showed in her rear movement. Shown in lovely condition and was attentive to her handler. A very smart coloured bitch who is still young and should improve further with time. She was just piped at the post today by the overall type of a 1.

3 Sheehy’s Kenaiteen Rusty Nail For Afanbull.

PGB (4)

1 Roughton’s La Perla Warbonnet, big upstanding Tri bitch, super strong head, well placed eyes and ears, mouth just off. She excels in bone and substance, strong neck and front with good feet. She could be shorter in back but looks the part and has strong rear quarters with good bend of stifle and strong pasterns which she used on the move. Coat was in good condition. A blend of substance whilst retaining femininity. A close decision today between 1 & 2. Two similar classy bitches with not a great deal between them, both with virtues. As they say, on another day the result could be different.

2 Dodd’s Teirwgwyn Voodoo Doll, another good quality upstanding bitch, white with red ear, super head with lovely expression, mouth just off. She has a great deal to like about her, not quite the bone of 1 but enough for her frame. Well-developed yet feminine body with lovely shape and good topline. Decent angulation moving well in front and slightly closer behind. In the final run up I thought she just started to lose her sparkle slightly in the heat but a nice bitch to own.

3 Richmond’s Brough’s Topfuel Rose Gold.

LB (3,2)

1 Kelly & Nisbet’s Serenbull Soul Angel, she may have been the only one in her class, but her quality and balance stood out with her eventually being awarded the Reserve CC. This R/W bitch is completely unexaggerated and has lots of breed type. Good bone for her size. Her headpiece is elegant and feminine, she has a good mouth, neck, shoulder and front, wide chest, short compact shapely developed body, good tail set and carriage. Well angulated hind quarters. She is completely balanced and couldn’t stand wrong and her movement was sound. She was well handled through her paces and gave an excellent account of herself in the ring. I was delighted to award her the Reserve CC. RCC.

OB (9, 5)

1 Morris & Heath’s Bluepoint Kittiwake, the more you look at this young bitch the more you appreciate her. She exudes quality from her wonderful shapely head to the tip of her tail. Her head is excellent, completely filled with the desired profile, well placed eye giving the correct expression. Her front section is exactly as it should with good shoulders and tucked in elbows. Her body is short and standing looking at her outline, she looks an absolute picture. Short back, good topline with the right amount of arching over the loin leading into a good tail set which she carries correctly. She moved well and has a decent bend of stifle, would just like her to drive a little more from behind. At 17 months old, surely she still has even more to offer with further maturity. She is a credit to her breeder/owners and was handled quietly and considerately winning the CC today in very good company and deserved it. Later in the day, she was placed G2 in the Terrier Group, giving a first class performance in the big ring flying the flag for the breed. Congratulations to her owners. CC & BOB.

2 Walker & Jenning’s Unionbulls Miss Saigon Of Astasia, a rich well marked B/W who is sound and nicely made throughout. Enough strength to her head, would like to see a little more profile, good mouth and ear placement. Short compact well rounded body and front to match. Good depth of chest and underline. Enough rear bend of stifle and power to her quarters. She moved freely in the front and slightly closer behind. Another compact stylish bitch. She seemed to lose a bit of interest in the final stages but just managed to squeeze enough out to take 2nd place. Beaten today by a 1st class bitch who put in a star performance.

3 Young’s Bilboen Harlee Quinn.
