CAIRN BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 16 Judge: Mrs Maxine Bennett BEST OF BREED : 9520 WEINBERGER Mrs S J Correnie Hurricane Fly CAIRN JUDGE BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 16 Cairn Terriers I would like to thank the committee of the National Dog show for giving me the opportunity to carry out my first championship show judging appointment, to the stewards who had worked all day without a break & to the exhibitors who gave me the opportunity of judging their dogs. Interpreting the Standard I am a strong believer in correct movement, all of my winners demonstrated good true movement. I was also looking for heads that really made my heart melt which all Cairns should do. Particularly in the dogs I found that muzzles are growing increasingly longer which is changing the look of the Cairn. Bitches conformed far greater to the Standard. I also believe that coats should be natural & not overdone. Unfortunately I saw a lot of scissor lines; in truth in some odd places, it is such a pity. Temperaments were, without exception, excellent. MPD (2) 1 Waugh’s Tribuns Licoirice Coin at Tribannon, dark brindle puppy giving a good outline, lovely head with good stop, correct dentition. Good lay of shoulders. Rear angulation gave strong rear drive, moved well holding topline. It will be interesting to see how he grows up. BPD; 2 Farwell’s Svendalens Starry Knight, not as advanced as 1 & needs time for his front to settle down. Shown in good coat & moved true from the rear. PD (2) 1 Felters & Rumen’s Landbuck Mister Tom, wheaten puppy shown in good coat, nice head with good stop & dark eye. Good length of neck & good lay of shoulder. Moved well holding topline; 2 Farwell’s Svendalens Starry Knight. JD (4,1a) 1 Shopland’s Trekhilli Mister Bean at Cherrycrack, dark brindle giving a good outline. Lovely head with correct stop, dark eye & correct dentition. Strong coat & looked like a natural Cairn. Moved the best in this class, true movement front & rear. Animated throughout. Liked him a lot & considered carefully for RCC; 2 Keeves’ Seveek I Spied That Dream, r/br who struggled to settle on the move. Good head & stop, strong body with deep rib. Overall preferred the movement of 1; 3 Dennis’ Svendalens Into Mischief. UGD (3) 1 Weinberger’s Correnie No No Romeo, r/br, lovely head with good stop & expression. Good front & rear angulation leading to true front & rear movement holding topline. Good tailset; 2 Thompson’s Castleline Barn Dance, a well turned out wheaten shown in great condition. Deep rib, level topline & good tailset. Overall preferred the movement of 1. PGD (7) 1 Weinberger’s Correnie Hurricane Fly, r/br with a fabulous head, to my mind what a Cairn’s head should look like. Expressive, dark eye, good stop, correct ear placement & correct bite. Good length of neck leading to excellent lay of shoulder. Nice deep rib. Moved with drive holding top line. Movement true front & rear. Coat shown naturally & not overdone. Showed throughout with enthusiasm. CC & BOB; 2 Parkin’s Carradine My Mate Matthew, although different from 1 this did not detract from the qualities you would expect in a well put together cairn. Very much reminded me of the “old fashioned” type of Cairn shown in good coat & the correct size. Lovely head & moved true both front & rear. RCC; 3 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Winsford. LD (5) 1 Kinton’s Woodthorpe I Know The Code, gr/br with good head & stop. Well turned out. Good tailset. Good rear drive holding topline well & won this class on showmanship & movement; 2 Drew’s Tycadno Thriller at L’artiste, very similar to 1 with lovely head. Preferred the movement & outline of 1; 3 Bateman & Gompel’s Carradine Terries Tipple. OD (2,1) 1 Currie’s Stirlingview Superhero, wheaten with good head, nice ear placement. Moved well but didn’t hold his topline so well on the move which spoiled his overall outline. VD (3) 1 Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Fable of Macmoon, dark brindle of 7 years who moved the best in this class. Lovely head with a good stop & furnishings. Teeth good for his age. Nice outline; 2 Parkin’s Roachdee Mystery Of The Full Moon, a smartly turned out 9½ year old who was in good condition for his age, didn’t move as well as 1; 3 Davies’ Cloverbrook Harris Tweed. MPB (4,1) 1 Yates & Johnson’s Pendley Vivien, what a little cracker this puppy is & one to definitely take home. Wheaten with lovely head & good stop, excellent length of neck leading to good lay of shoulders. Moved true front & rear & held topline on the move. Very showy & animated. BPB & BP; 2 Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Cloudbusting, a lovely puppy shown in good coat with many good qualities. Overall good conformation. Not as advanced as 1 but nonetheless a good future beckons; 3 Waite’s Svendalens Knight’s Passion. PB (2) 1 Dolan’s Glenrood High Society, a well turned out wheaten in good condition who moved well with drive. Lovely feminine head with sweet expression; 2 Thompson’s Castleline Caledonian Lass, r/br, a smart puppy who lost out to 1 on movement. Good head with dark eye & correct bite. JB (5) 1 Keeves’ Seveek Hopes ‘N’ Dreams, red with a lovely head & everything in the right place. Good deep rib, well laid back shoulder & good body. Once settled she moved well driving as a result of good rear angulation. Strong double coat. Showed with animation. This was very strong class; 2 Short’s Splinterhill’s Amazing Grace to Glenchess, a smart dark brindle who gave a lovely outline. Strong coat. Moved well. A close call between 1 & 2; 3 Dolan’s Glenrood Burlesque. UGB (4,2) 1 Osborn’s Tweslam Gimme Gimme Magic, wheaten with coat coming through. Good movement front & rear, nice head & correct dentition; 2 Williams’ Seveek Country Sunset, wheaten/br with lots to like but didn’t move as well as 1. PGB (5) 1 Waugh’s Andrum Brite Side, I was very taken with this bitch mainly on her movement. When she moved she virtually floated around the ring. Fabulous head with good stop, feminine expression & some attitude. Good deep rib & held topline well on the move. Although coat not at its best you couldn’t ignore the great qualities underneath. She lost out on BOB as she was getting bored by the end. CC; 2 Osborn’s Tweslam Born To Bewitch, red in strong double coat with good movement. Liked her head a lot, good stop & dark eye. Showed well with animation. Good tailset; 3 Drew’s Miketos Marvelous Fiona at L’artiste. LB (8,1) 1 Robinson’s Cruzo Corn Bunting, another strong class with this bitch taking it on movement. Struggled a little to settle but when she did demonstrated good front & rear movement. Nicely turned out in strong double coat. Good head & expression, good length of neck & level topline. Overall a good outline & animated; 2 Thomas’ Tycadno Miss Moneypenny, a close decision with 1. Preferred head on 2 but 1 had it on movement; 3 Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Fortune Teller. OB (5,1) 1 Dolan’s Glenrood Scheherazade, a well turned out pretty wheaten bitch who was game & alert. Straight front with level topline. Moved true front & rear. Could have moved better in the challenge; 2 Robinson’s Cruzo Capriole, a gr/br with a nice head who rather let herself down when moving. Nice outline; 3 Owen’s Caldwall Carefree. VB (1) 1 Usher’s Stryveling Polly Flinders, 7 year old wheaten with sweet head. Lively & animated & in good condition for her age. MAXINE BENNETT
