CAIRN JUDGE THREE COUNTIES 24

I would like to thank the officers and committee of the show for their kind invitation to judge Cairn Terriers. Thanks also to my efficient stewards. I was originally invited to judge the 2021 show, but the long wait was worth it – some lovely dogs to go over at a well-run show in the Malvern Hills – and the sun shone. I have two general comments to make: mouths were excellent: mostly clean, large teeth and good bites. Unfortunately, though, I noticed that some handlers didn’t show their exhibits on a loose lead, which hampered movement. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and was delighted with the overall quality of Cairns. Sincere thanks to all the exhibitors for entering under me and allowing me to go over their dogs.

MPD (3,0)

1 Mcintyre’s Castleline Lucas of Macantsoir. A confident 7 months old wheaten brindle puppy. Good head and expression with correct mouth and large teeth. A good coat for his age. Showed well. Needed to settle a little more on the move today. Will watch his progress with interest.

2 Munday’s Furythor Reluctant Villain. Another confident puppy, not quite as mature as 1), but well balanced, with a good reach of neck and correct ear set. Good coat. Just needs to settle on the move.

3 Parkin’s Mosspur Into the Shadows.

1 Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Game Set N Match. A dark brindle, masculine dog, who immediately impressed me when he entered the ring with a workmanlike appearance and alert attitude. My notes say ‘on his toes’. Very well made throughout; lovely head, excellent expression, Good reach of neck flowing into excellent shoulders, super topline and correct tailset. Very good front and rear, good bend of stifle; nothing overdone. In excellent condition, moved with drive both ways. I was delighted to be able to award him DCC and BOB.

2 Thomas’ Tycadno Magic Man. Another masculine dog who was good to go over. Well-made throughout with super expression, confident demeanour and showed well for his handler. A quality exhibit who moved well both ways, but I preferred the coat quality of 1) on the day.

3 Lucas and Tobutt’s Seveek Country Lad.

OD (4,2)

1 Inett and Harrison’s Carradine Applejack. This smart and alert dog caught my eye as he entered the ring. Fully furnished, masculine head with excellent mouth, typical expression. 2 Thompson’s Castleline Maitree. Very pretty cream bitch with well furnished feminine head and expression. Big teeth and strong jaw. Good shoulders and nice spring of rib. All in proportion and beautifully balanced. Good coat. Liked her a lot, but just preferred the movement of 1) on the day.

3 Munday’s Furythor Marvel at Me.

OB (3,0)

1 Kinton’s Ch. Cloverbrook Unbreakable at Woodthorpe. I judged this bitch as a puppy and remarked she was ‘out of the top drawer’. She proved that again today. Beautiful head and expression, dark eye. Excellent mouth, well balanced, standing well on forepaws, presenting a lovely, typical outline. Lovely to go over and in excellent condition. Moved correctly both ways but lacked a little animation today. Had to give way to the younger bitch on this occasion, but couldn’t be denied RCC.

2 Inett and Harrison’s Carradine PiccaddLilly. Another smart bitch who presented a typical outline. Good head, excellent mouth, neck, topline and tailset. Good front, decent depth of chest and enough bone. Moved correctly. Presented in excellent coat and condition.

3 Bubb’s Wandris Please Yourself.
