CAIRN JUDGE WELKS 25

I would like to thank the Committee of the West of England Ladies Kennel Society for inviting me to judge Cairn Terriers at its well-run and well-organised show. Thanks also for the warm welcome on arrival and the hospitality throughout the day. This was my first CC appointment and I was thrilled with my entry, with very few absent on the day. Thank you to all of the exhibitors that entered and allowed me the opportunity of assessing their Cairns. It was lovely to be outside and the weather was kind. To be expected, some of the Cairns found the interesting smells on the grass to be quite a distraction. All temperaments were excellent. Sizes varied, making overall balance a particular consideration for me today. I only noted two mouths where the bite was close to being level. There were several quality Cairns in attendance today, and some close decisions. Finally, thank you to my efficient and friendly stewards, Keith and Nicky, for ensuring that proceedings ran smoothly.

MPD (1)

1 Carradine Sir Percival (Lucas & Tobutt) – wheaten brindle, shown in good coat of correct texture. He created a lovely outline when standing. Correct scissor bite, pronounced stop, neat ears and mischievous expression. Clean shoulders, good spring of rib and correct tail set. His neck flows into a level topline, which he held on the move. He moved soundly, though a touch close behind today.

PD (1)

1 Ariom Northern Dancer with Winetta (Percy) – a lovely red puppy, looking more mature than his 10 months. He has correct dentition and a strong jaw. A pronounced stop, neat ears and mischievous expression complete a well-balanced head. He has a good length of neck and clean shoulders. His topline is level, which he holds on the move. Correct tail set and hind quarters. He found the smells in the outdoor ring quite distracting. However, when he settled, he moved well both ways. A true showman and a promising youngster. BPD and BPIB

JD (2)

1 t Landbuck Sabrage (Felters & Rumens) – a grey brindle who is up to size. Shown in a quality jacket of correct texture. He has a lovely head, with a broad skull and pronounced stop, neat ears, strong jaw and correct bite. His neck flows into a level topline and correct tail set. He has a good spring of rib. His angulations are correct front and rear, creating a lovely well-balanced outline. He moved around the ring with drive and his movement was true both ways. Seriously considered him in the dog line up.

2 Mosspur Into The Shadows (Parkin) – a nice dog who is still maturing. He has a correct scissor bite, a pronounced stop and neat ears. His neck flows into a level topline, which he held on the move. Shown in a nice coat of correct texture. He created a balanced outline when standing. He moved around the ring with drive. A little wide in front today.

PGD (2)

1 Wonderpaws Obi Wan Kenobi (Griffiths) – a well-balanced dog shown in a good coat of correct texture. His head is well-furnished with desired dark points. He has a strong jaw with correct dentition and a mischievous expression. I would prefer a slightly higher ear placement to complete his head. Good length of neck and clean shoulders. Level topline and tail well set on. Correct rear angulations. Moved well both ways.

2 Sanderfield On The Rocks for Cherrycrack (Imp Fin) (Shopland) – a dark brindle who is up to size. A lovely head. He has a correct scissor bite, a strong jaw, a pronounced stop and neat ears. His neck is of good length and he has a good spring of rib. He has clean shoulders, a level topline and his tail is well set on. He seemed unsettled in the ring, which affected his movement. I felt the bitch moved a little better in the challenge, which gave her the slight edge today.
