FOX SMOOTH JUDGE BORDER UNION 19

My thanks to the Committee of the Border Union Championship Dog Show for inviting me to judge Smooth Fox Terriers at this popular dog show, set in the most beautiful surroundings on the Scottish border in Kelso. My thanks to my two stewards who had a very long day. Thank you to the exhibitors for allowing me to go over their dogs. The Standard states in ‘General Appearance’... ‘Active and lively, bone and strength in a small compass, never cloddy or coarse’. This describes my two Challenge Certificate winners without doubt. Both are puppies, which bodes well for the Breed, the Bitch, ‘Borovale Nameri’ despite being two months younger than the Dog, Glendraterra Will Eye Am’, shows more maturity. Both are of a similar stamp, in the challenge for Best of Breed both gave a good account of themselves. The dog with his stunning head, short back and substantial limbs, the bitch with her classic outline, keen outlook and standing four square covering the ground, up on her toes. Today she had the edge pleased to award her Best of Breed, Best Puppy and delighted to see she won the Terrier Puppy Group.

PD (2, 1)

1 Thornton & Bebbington’s Glendraterra Will Eye Am. 11 months black headed puppy of substance and quality. Most gorgeous head, best of the day, flat skull, clean cheeks, strong muzzle of good length, correct bite. Good well placed ears adding to his excellent expression, small dark eyes correctly placed giving him a almost ‘noble’ outlook. Long neck good shoulders. Well bodied, short strong loin with well set tail, strong quarters, good turn of stifle, hocks well let down, feet need to tighten to complete the picture. All he lacks is maturity and that will come with time. Pleased to award him the CC.

JD (3,1)

1 Vickers’ Eskwyre Meet Me In St Louis. Rich tan marked dog in excellent condition, nice size combining substance with quality. Great forehand, elegant outline, attractive head, well placed ears, good neck flowing into well laid shoulders, level back, good spring of rib, strong quarters, good hind angulation. Good front, best of legs and feet, sound mover, great showman. Res CC. Just preferred head qualities of the CC winner.

2 Davison’s Agria Latin Lover. Black marked dog in lovely order, long lean head, small dark eye, neat ears, well put together, straight front, ample bone, good quarters, moved well.

OD (3, 1)

1 Dams’ Tamedale Caruso. Handsome masculine tan marked dog of good type, classic outline, stands four square on excellent legs and feet, head of good length, flat skull, strong muzzle, well placed ears and eyes. Good neck and shoulders, well ribbed up, powerful quarters, in good coat, moved well both ways.

2 Anderson & Watt’s Ch Nisyros Stormbound To Humeston. Quality lightly black marked dog that I have always admired from the ringside, standing he looked the part. Nice size, good head of fair length, dark eye, clean cheeks, would like more lift to his ears, elegant outline, short coupled, straight front, nicely balanced. Not happy with the grass surface on the move.

PB (5, 1)

1 Hannar’s Borovale Nameri. Most beautiful black headed puppy, oozes quality and class. So balanced, classic outline at only 9 months of age she has room to grow on, everything is there in correct proportion. Long elegant feminine head, flat skull ,neat well set ears, strong foreface, small dark eye giving correct ‘varmity’ expression, long gracefully arched strong neck flowing into clean well laid shoulders. Short level back with good ribbing for one so young, strong well angulated quarters, ample bone good tight feet, stands up on her toes ‘on the tip toe of expectation’, moved with drive. Gave 100% all the time, a great showgirl with a bright future. Pleased to award her the CC and later BOB, she went on to win the Terrier Puppy Group. Well handled and congratulations to her family. CC, BOB, BP & PG1.

2 Thornton & Bebbington’s Glendraterra Eye Catcha. Black marked quality puppy, unfortunate to meet such a polished performer in first. Elegant and feminine, like the winner has the most beautiful head and expression, good ears, lean cheeks, eyes like ‘coals’, keen expression, good neck and shoulders, straight front, short coupled, nice round bone, moved well, kept her handler on her toes, litter sister to the CC winning dog. Fortunate to have two such lovely puppies. 3 Smith’s Thunderclap Macarena.

JB (4, 2)

1 Dams’ Tamedale Priscilla. Attractive quality tan headed bitch of good type, good head and ears, neck of fair length, well laid clean shoulders, straight front, nice legs and feet. Good spring of rib, level topline, well set tail, good quarters. Hind movement let her down.

2 Smith’s Thunderclap Macguigan. This substantial black marked bitch was giving a lot away in age, very much a raw puppy but a very nice, youngster. Litter sister to third in the Puppy Bitch class, she has a lean classy head, dark eye, ears need to lift to complete her expression, lovely round bone, good feet, well bodied, moved well.

PGB (3)

1 Glass, Anderson & Watt’s Nisyros Absolutely Spot On. Lightly black marked bitch, nice size, in good coat and condition Good head, strong foreface, good ears, dark well placed eyes. Big deep body, short coupled, good tailset, correct front legs and feet, would like more turn of stifle.

2 Davison’s Lizoni Hot To Trot. Black and white bitch in lovely condition, covered the ground standing and moving. Pleasing head and expression, correct ear and eye, balanced outline, moved well, taller and less compact than the winner. 3 Dams’ Tamedale Obsession.

LB (4, 1)

1 Arustamyan’s Lorecon Space Monster. Elegant half faced black marked bitch, scored in head qualities, flat skull, lean cheeks, strong well chiselled foreface, neat ears, dark eye, very feminine. Good reach of neck flowing into well laid shoulders, straight front, well ribbed up, strong loin , good tailset. Good angulation, hocks well let down. Moved and showed well. In the challenge just preferred the overall balance of the CC winner. Res CC.

3 Ketley & Gash’s Enjakay Secret Love.

OB (2)

1 Glass’ Nisyros Out Of Control ShEx. Compact beautifully balanced lightly black marked bitch of good type like the others from this kennel. Sound, good legs and tight feet, quality head, dark eye well placed ears. Unfortunately not interested in the proceedings. However in the challenge gave a good account of herself.

2 Hannar’s Borovale Georgia. Well known black headed bitch with a stunning profile, keen outlook. Great head and expression, long graceful neck, strong topline, good tailset, excellent spring of rib, strong quarters, hocks well let down, out of coat today. Preferred the front on first.
