FOX SMOOTH JUDGE CRUFTS 16
It was the greatest honour to have been invited to judge this prestigious show and I thank those who entered their dogs for my honest opinion. I must thank my stewards Bob Potts and Ruth Calvert Smith for their excellent assistance throughout. It had been instilled in all judges to think of “fit for function” whilst officiating and together with breed type and size I endeavoured to uphold those thoughts throughout. The UK has lost many of the clever breeders of yesteryear who maintained breed type and we now find several different types and sizes. Those wonderful heads that we once had are now a rarity and movement also needs to be addressed. There were a few whose hind action was too close behind and these should not be used in any breeding plan. My CC winners fulfilled my requirements and my BOB reminded me so much of the type and quality that the UK used to have as norm.
VD (3,0): A lovely start to my judging.
1. Darby’s Ch Star Pride Devil in Disguise.
Well known Tan/White who exudes quality throughout. Lovely head with good eye and ears. In exc ellent condition as one would expect from this kennel. Good bone, legs and feet. Moved well.
2. Griffiths & Jones’ Ch Yozella White Tie.
Another well-known dog. This B/W has a good head. Nice neck into well-built shoulders. Good body shape. Moved OK. Again in excellent condition. Just did not use his ears to advantage.
3. Johannessen-Adams Trellwffan Coal.
B/W who at 10 plus years is a credit to his owner. Nice overall shape and in good bloom. He was just feeling his age today and not using his ears to advantage.
PD (1,0):
1. Dolman’s Yoxella Without Equal at Zebec.
B/W youngster of nice overall shape. Good head and expression with strength to muzzle. A little heavy in ears. Could be shorter in body. In good condition and moved well.
JD (6,0):
1. Schoneberg’s Pepino vd Schonen Bergen.
B/W of quality. Has good head and expression. Nice neck and shoulders. Good body shape. In lovely bloom and condition. Best mover in the class. Sadly did not appreciate the carpet but did sufficient to win the class.
2. Weiss’ Yoxella Wannabe de la Rosa.
9 month b/w of promise. Excellent body shape being so short coupled. Good bone, legs and feet. Moved OK. Has a fair head with nice expression. Would prefer more foreface.
3 Brookes’ Zetamaz Black on Track.
B/W of nice overall type. Good head and expression. Moved OK. In good condition. Just a shade long caste.
PGD (6,1):
1. Brookes’ Zetamaz Gerard Depardieu.
B/W of quality with good body shape. Nice head and expression. However he is a shade heavy on ears. Good front with adequate legs and feet. Good topline with tail set correctly. Shows really well.
2. Turley’s Zetamaz Marcel Marceau avec Llyunamill.
Nearly all white this B/W has a good head and expression with good chiselling. Neat ears. Nice neck and shoulders. Just a little long caste and I would prefer more bone. Moved well.
3. Saunders’ Galleyshine Black Emperor.
B/W with fair head. Nice expression. Good body shape and moved OK. In excellent condition and bloom.
LD (9,0):
1. Schoneberg’s Nero vd Schonen Bergen.
B/W of quality. Lovely head and expression. To be critical could have smaller ears. Nice neck and shoulders. Excellent body shape with good bone, legs and feet. Moved really well. In outstanding bloom and condition. Pushed hard for reserve cc.
2. Ketley & Gash’s Enjakay Split Second.
Another quality animal this nearly all white b/w impressed with his overall shape. Nice head, ears and expression. Good neck into well placed shoulders. Excellent topline which he retained on the move. Unlucky to meet the winner.
3. Kralova’s Agria Total Recall.
Making up a trio of lovely dogs this T/W has an excellent short coupled body. Good legs and feet. Moved well. Has a nice head and expression. I would prefer his ears a little better set. In lovely condition. Has the correct terrier spirit and never stopped showing.
OD (14,0):
It is a long time since a class of this size was seen and I enjoyed the challenge having to short list a number before deciding my final placements.
1. Anderson, Watt & Gabel’s Am Ch Absolutely Uncensored.
Nearly all white with a black patch on his rump. My comments read wow! He simply took my breath away when he entered the ring and after going over him on the table I took another gulp!
Wonderful head and expression. Excellent neck into decent shoulders. Ultra-short back. Excellent tail set. Great legs, feet and bone. Moved really well for his clever handler. To be hyper critical I would have liked him to be in better coat as he needs a new jacket. However as I found out later he is just acclimatising to a new life in Scotland and can only improve. He is the perfect size and type and both breeder and judge alike should take note of this for the future benefit of the breed. CC & BOB.
2. Broom & Crouch’s Oaxaca Del Boy with Roxway.
T/W with all white body. Another with correct size. Short coupled with good bone, legs and feet. Tail on top. Quality head with nice expression. At times he does not use his ears to advantage. However did so when it mattered. In outstanding condition and presentation as one would expect from this kennel. RCC and should gain his title in due course.
2.Mitnyan’s Mercuryfox Wigo.
B/W who made up an excellent trio. This dog has an excellent head and expression with neat ears. Good neck and shoulders. Nice body shape. Good tail set with plenty behind. Lovely legs and feet. Moved well and unlucky to meet the winner. In gleaming condition.
PB (5,0):
1. Davies’ L’Magali Du Manoir Saint Adrien of Mosvalley.
B/W with good body shape. Nice bone, legs and feet. Excels head and expression. Good neck and shoulders. Moved well. In excellent coat and condition. Most promising. Best Puppy.
2. McShane’s Thunderclap McKenna.
T/W excelling body shape being so short coupled. Lovely bone, legs and feet. Fair head and expression. Spoilt by cheekiness. Nice coat and condition.
3.Griffiths’ Yoxella Wish List.
B/W of nice shape with good bone, legs and feet. Fair head but needs more length of foreface. Moved OK. In good coat and condition.
JB (3,0):
1. Morris’ Sanamaris Step Lively.
B/W of good overall shape. Nice head and expression. Good neck and shoulders. Excels legs and feet. Moved OK although a shade short stepping. In excellent coat and condition as one would expect from this kennel.
2. Mullan’s Tamodan One Vision.
B/W Again nice overall type. Good head and expression. Bit heavy ears. Good legs and feet. Moved OK.
3.Day & Ellis’ Tamodan First Verse.
White/ticked of good breed type. Nice head. Unsettled with ears. Moved OK. Requires a little more weight to complete the picture.
PGB (6,1):
1. Battistini-Savini’s Star Pride Everybody Loves Me.
T/W of quality. Lovely shape with a quality head and expression. Perhaps just a shade large in ear. Good neck and shoulders. Level top-line with correct tail set. Nice legs and feet. Moved well. In good coat and condition.
2. Templeton’s Nisyros Out of Control.
B/W of quality with good body shape. Nice legs and feet. Good head and expression with decent ear carriage. Another with good neck and shoulders. Moved well. A little uncertain at the end. A pity.
3. Rundle’s Saredon American Girl.
B/W with good overall shape. Decent head and expression. In good coat and condition. A little unsettled on the move.
LB (5,0):
1. Crouch, Murray & Horspool’s Oaxaca Racquel.
T/W of quality. Excels head and expression. Neat ears. Lovely neck and shoulders. Good body shape. Tail on top. Nice legs and feet. Moved well. Presented in excellent condition. RCC.
2. Baker & Jones’ Darlaur Delaware to Tuskenraider.
T/W of much quality having the most gorgeous head and expression. Neat ears. Lovely neck and shoulders. Good body shape with tail on top. Lovely legs and feet. In great bloom and condition. Just not quite the movement of the winner.
3. Anderson & Watt’s Nisyros Remote Control.
B/W making up a lovely trio of bitches. Another with an excellent head and expression. Good neck and shoulders. Nice body shape with tail on top. Good legs and feet. Moved OK. Just did not use her ears to advantage.
OB (7,1):
1. Smith, Ruggieri & Gabel’s Absolutely Oh My.
T/W of tremendous quality. Beautiful head with correct expression. Neat ears. Excels body shape being so short coupled. Lovely bone, legs and feet. Tail on top. Moved well and never stopped showing. Wins the CC. When it came to the challenge for BOB the dog had a better neck and shoulders and was more assertive on the move but this takes nothing away from this lovely bitch who was exhibited in lovely bloom and condition.
2. Mohrke’s Fly vd Bismarckquelle.
T/W. Another quality bitch with lovely overall shape. Nice head and expression. Used her ears all the time. Nice neck and shoulders. Good body shape with tail on top. Moved out well and never stopped showing. In lovely order. Pressed hard for the RCC.
3. Mullan’s Nisyros Climate Control at Tamodan.
B/W making up a nice trio. She has a lovely head and expression with good ears. Nice body shape with tail on top. Moved OK but just a little lethargic today. In good coat and condition.
GCB (1,0)
1. Rogers’ Falkmere’s First Impression.
T/W of good breed type. Fair head. Good shoulders and has a nice body shape. Legs and feet OK. Never lets her owner down when on the move. In good order.
