IRISH JUDGE CRUFTS 19

It was in the early 70's that I attended my first Crufts, then held at Earls Court which left a lasting impression. Since then my visits to Crufts have numbered 30, mostly as an exhibitor, but never imagined that one day I would be standing on the green carpet to judge at this prestigious show. My sincere thanks to the Kennel Club for the privilege and the exhibitors for the opportunity to handle their dogs. In judging the Irish Terrier, I look for the true d'hurty expression, achieved with a correct head with strength and strong underjaw, a dark almond shaped eye, not too close together, well placed ears not to high set and they must never resemble a Fox Terriers. Movement needs to be free with good reach from powerful hindquarters, parallel coming and going. A correct coat needs to be harsh with a broken appearance.

Vet D (2,1)

1 Suhonen's - Ch. Karamell-in Mister Finland. Strong dog, shown in a tip top condition. Very good head, strong foreface, most elegant neck, straight back, excellent coat, showed and moved very well for his age.

2 Bannister's - Ch. Montelle Vision in Red. Excellent head with correct expression and ear carriage, correct top line, good tail set, not in the best coat today. Has well angulated quarters but could have moved with more purpose today.

PD (2)

1 Bamsey's - Holbam Celtic Wizzard - Excellent youngster with the correct head and expression, right for size. Elegant top line, straight back and correct tail set. Nice coat. Correct angulation, moved very well, coming and going. Will have a bright future. BP.

2 Nevill's - Norakim a Storr at Rosemonelle - An excellent dog too but needs more time to mature. Lovely head, correct size and proportions, nice jacket, moved well, would like to see him in a year.

JD (6)

1 Cooke's - Montelle Look of Gold - Nice dog with excellent head and ears, elegant top line, straight back with good tail set, harsh coat, very good movement, needs time to settle down and some show training.

2 O'Meara - Megacant Brian Boru - Very good head with correct expression, foreface could be stronger, elegant top line. Straight back, with just enough length. Excellent coat, very well angulated, moved and handled well.

3 Nevill's - Norakim a Storr at Rosemonelle.

PGD (4)

1 Anderson & Byrne's - Kerrykeel Dillon - Lovely head and expression, great top line, well laid-back shoulder, straight back with correct length, tail on top, excellent coat but a little bit short today, moved very well both ways.

2 Simons' - Saredon Red Berry - Nice head, foreface with good length but could be a little bit stronger, straight back with good tail set, moderate length of back, in excellent coat, quarters of good angulation, hocks well let down, moved well both ways.

3 McGloin's - Kilkillogue Flame Dancer - Head of good proportion, just a little plain has dark eye & correct ear set. Would prefer more slope to shoulder to give a more elegant top line as in 1 & 2. In very good coat, moved well.

LD (4)

1 Kennedy's Betirish Flying in the Sky at Tippanagh. Correct head with nicely placed ears, strong underjaw, elegant top line, racy body with the correct substance, well placed shoulder, strong hindquarters with low hocks, excellent coat, but not in the best show-condition, moved with power.

2 Bower's Lakeridge Riordan. Presents an impressive picture, however head rather too narrow with eyes too close together and ears rather high set, has an excellent topline with straight back and correct set tail. Presented in excellent jacket, harsh and deep red. Rear movement a little close, front rather untidy. Showed to advantage and well presented.

3 Atkin's Gengis Khan. Head of good proportion, just a little heavy in ear and would prefer a darker eye. Has good topline, straight back, but high tail set. Has an excellent coat of good colour moved well, parallel both ways.

OD (4)

1 Thomas' Ch. Lead the Way to Montelle. A great dog, very close to the standard. Excellent head with parallel line, flat skull, strong underjaw, dark eyes almond shaped, perfect ears, the fold is about 1 cm over the skull, and they fall to the outside corner of the eye. Elegant top line with straight back, correct proportion, very best coat, he would get the award for best coat and colour and best expression easily, perfect reach and powerful hind movement. CC and BOB.

2Anderson's Ch. Ben-Oskar von Obersten Holz at Kerrykeel - An excellent dog too. pressed the winner very hard. Excellent head with the correct expression, very elegant top line, straight back, correct length, excellent angulation, coat today a little bit short, moves very well but not so smooth as the winner. Res CC.

3 Rundle & Williams' - Ch. Sidewater Sea Fury - another worthy Champion but did not have the head of 1 & 2, correct topline, with well-proportioned body, good tail set, harsh coat, very good shoulder and hindquarters, moved well.

Vet B (2)

1 Price's Sujoncla Dancing Orchid at Woodraith. Lovely bitch, correct head and expression, very good top line, good set on, harsh coat, moved sound and well both ways.

2 Nevill's - Rosemonelle Isabella - nice bitch too, with all the attributes an Irish should have, but not showing her terrier temperament on the day.

PB (2)

1 Ruffles & Williamson's Holbam Celtic Erin - Very nice young girl with lovely head, very correct proportion with good angulation, harsh coat, showed and moved very well for her age, one with a future.

2 Redman's - Holbam Celtic Little Minx - Another nice puppy, sister to above and similar in type but ears not so settled. Not quite in the coat of above but moved and showed well.

JB (7)

1 Teeuwen's - Queen du Neufmoulin - Young bitch of correct proportions, with a lovely head and expression, ears a little unsettled at times. Has an elegant top line, well-made body of substance with well laid shoulder, correct set tail, in good harsh coat, showed and moved very well.

2 Rhodes' - Magairlin Silver Dawn at Ghyllslap - Nice bitch with a correct head, elegant top line, straight back, good tail set, very good harsh coat, moved well. Needing a little more time for coat condition.

3 Hardman's - Bonosue Red Tess - Well-built bitch with very good head, ears a little high set, good top line. Correct back and tail set, substantial body, very good coat, movement okay.

PGB (6)

1 Anderson's - Kerrykeel Naoise - Excellent head, flat skull and strong underjaw, very elegant top line, straight back, tail set OK but rather gay in carriage. Has a strong well-built body, showed and moved well, not in best coat today.

2 Cooke's - Royal Lady at Montelle. One I like a lot, with lovely head and expression, typical top line, straight back with high tail set, excellent coat, this is the coat I like very much with the real broken appearance, correct body proportion. Not at one with handler on the day so she did not show me the real Irish temperament.

3 Karau - Balirolyat Molly's a Diva - Correct body proportion, has good head, but has winter nose at present. Coat could have a little more texture, showed and moved well.

LB (7,2)

1 Atkin's - Holbam Celtic Summer - A lovely bitch with excellent head, ears are not at their best today, very elegant top line, correct tail set, racy body of substance of good proportion. Hindquarters strong with good angulation, harsh coat with correct texture. Moved very sound and parallel both ways. BCC.

2 Lee's - Sujoncla Goyathlay - Typical in outline. Has pleasing head, correct expression with parallel lines, well placed and set ears, nice topline with good rail set, excellent coat of harsh texture. Quarters well angulated but went a little close behind.

3 Hobson's - Erredwiltsir Irish Bells - Typical bitch of correct size, very good head, foreface could be little bit stronger, very good ear set, elegant top line, back line could be firmer but has a good set on and good angulation. Coat of harsh texture.

OB (6/2)

1 Kennedy's Ir Ch. Betirish Greetings from Eire at Tippanagh - Excellent head, although correct in expression could be trimmed to better advantage. Has an elegant top line with strong racy body, well set tail, moved well with great reach and power to hind movement. Res-BCC

2 McGloin's IR Ch. Betirish Great Expectations - Another nice bitch with many good points, has a lovely head of correct proportion. Rather short in coat today, more time for this could have made a difference.

3 Price's Magairlin Adhmor Queen. Overall, an excellent bitch, elegant top line, of good proportions, very well angled, excellent harsh hair, moved very well both way. Disappointing in head, would prefer a flater skull and more strength in underjaw, eyes a little close set.

Good Citizen Dog Scheme B (2)

1 Lee's - Sujoncla Goyathlay. 2 Nolcini's Holbam Celtic Kate A very nice type of bitch of good balance. Most pleasing in head. Coat not at its best. Movement sound but could have more animation.
