LAKELAND JUDGE CRUFTS 19

The overall entry of 34 from 33 dogs was not too bad. The early classes were very thinly populated, but the senior classes were good. My impression was that movement was pretty good by and large, but that there were very few dogs there that had coats as described in the breed standard as being 'Dense, harsh and weather resisting, with good undercoat'. And size needs to be watched with several of the exhibits being well above the standard's requirements. In the main heads seemed good. My thanks to the exhibitors for the sporting way in which they accepted my decisions.

VD (1)

1. Rose's That's My Harry, an eleven year old and the only veteran present. OK for size but coat not at its best. Moves OK in front but showing his age a little in hind movement. Well enough proportioned. Tail not carried with the enthusiasm of a youngster. Good eye and correct ears well carried. Best Veteran

PD (1)

1. Anderson & Watt's Nisyros Somersby, a very pleasing little youngster of eight months. Good flat skull and correct head proportions and good ears. Enough reach of neck. Good firm topline and correct tailset. Moved OK in front and behind and shown in pretty good coat for his age.

JD (1)

1. Evans' Ralphina All About Kevin, very pleasing in head and expression, good tailset and shown in good harsh coat. Enough bone and good for size. Could benefit from a shade more strength of thigh and second thigh to complete the picture but moved around the ring maintaining his topline well and moved slightly better behind than in front. Showed smartly

PGD (1)

1 Schoeneberg's Paperman Moon Driver, a dog that is not overdone for size. Good skull and correct eye. Enough strength of muzzle. Good neck, topline and tailset. Shown a bit short of coat. Well muscled behind. Plenty of bend of stifle could be better in hocks.

OD (9)

1. Averis & Barker's Saredon This I England, very pleasing young dog. Correct for size. Good in head with correct flat skull and well-proportioned skull to foreface. Enough bone and good compact feet. Good coat of the right texture and had enough of it. Moved soundly and was well muscled behind. Showed well most of the time but can be a bit of a handful if he so chooses. Scored for type, size, balance and coat. Went on to win DCC and BOB

2. Van Zantvoort & Albers' Multi Ch Mieth's Aaron. Very good in head and expression. Shown just a shade light in body substance. Well arched neck of enough length. Better in tail than 1. Could have a shade more coat. Good feet. RDCC

3. Schembri's Multi Ch Saredon Enigma, another pleasing dog but now rather up to size. Very strong head and good eye and expression and correct in neck and topline. Could benefit from just a shade more refinement. Shown in good coat and moved out well.

PB (2)

1. Averis & Barker's Saredon Finer Things, better for size than 2 and was well proportioned. Very pleasing in head and skull, good reach of neck and pleasing topline. Better in coat than 2. Needs to settle in movement. Scored here for size, compactness and for coat. Went on to be Best Puppy in Breed

2. Aleksashina's Viva Tramontana, not so good in coat as 1. Pleasing in head but could be better in eye. Good reach of neck and OK in topline but not in the best of coats. Could move better in front. Well bent stifle, good tailset and enough bone

JB (3)

1. Schoeneberg's Paperman Moonshine, a very pleasing youngster with an excellent neck and topline. Moved well in front and behind. Excellent head with just the right skull and enough strength of muzzle. Good ears well carried. Correct tailset. Enough bone and good compact feet with correct pasterns. Went on to win RBCC

2. Grenaae's Kajsenborg's Amazing Arizona, close up to the winner in many ways though a shade heavier over the shoulder. Very good in neck and firm in topline. Tail carried a shade high. Enough turn of stifle. Good in head and expression. Didn't move quite so well as 1.

3. Mikheeva's Sher Izabel, not quite so strong in topline but pleasing on head and ears, good in front but not using her rear end as well as I would have preferred on the day.

PGB (3,1)

Quite a difficult class to judge.

1. Leadbeater & Kerrigan's Leadstaffs More Than This, didn't have much coat but what was there was of better texture than 2. Could move better in front. OK in head but could use ears better at times. Good topline and better for size than 2.

2. Girousse's Zavetnaya Mechta Marigold, wasn't really giving the most impressive performance in the ring. But she was very good in neck and topline. Not by any means small and feminine, she could have been a bit more refined in head and skull.

LB (4,3)

1. Evans' Eskwyre Red Mist to Ralphina, very pleasing bitch shown in excellent coat. Typical head and expression with correct eye and ears. Very good neck, topline and tailset. Good rib and correct loin. Moved out very soundly in front and behind. Sometimes played up a bit for handler.

OB (7,1)

1. Johnston's Oregill Hot Topic, a very typey bitch. She did not always make the most of herself, but she scored for type and moved very soundly in front and behind. She was excellent in head proportions, good reach of neck and had correct strong topline and good tailset. She was shown in good coat. Excellent in front. Not overdone in any way but simply shouted 'Lakeland Terrier' for type.

2. Schoeneberg's Paperman Julia, not quite as typey in head as 1 but scored very much for body lines with a good firm topline and correct tail well carried. Could do with a shade more coat. Good small compact feet and correct in pasterns. Moved well behind

3. Averis' Ch Saredon Miss Pimernell, another pleasing bitch with a good head but needed more body substance to complete the picture. Didn't move quite as well as 2 in front but moved well behind and had pleasing overall proportions.
