LAKELAND JUDGE CRUFTS 25

It is always an honour to judge your own breed and even more so when it is at Crufts. I express my gratitude to Tom Mather and his committee for the invitation and the generous hospitality on the evening pre-Crufts and on the day. My two stewards deserve a mention as they operated the ring efficiently without any issues. As for the dogs, I was more than delighted to have received an entry of 31 dogs/ 36 entries and pleased to report they all had good temperaments and were presented in good order. However, I was extremely concerned with the size of some of the dogs. The Lakeland standard asks for dogs to not exceed 14 ½ inches at the withers and I’m sure a male measuring 14 inches would look too big next to some of the exhibits shown today, who appeared no more than 13 inches tall. The Lakeland should never appear short on the leg, light in bone and toyish in appearance. We need to remember the origins of the breed and the size of the quarry they were expected to dispatch.

JD (1/0)

1 Oregill Ferrari Rosso (Johnston) – An upstanding youngster who is the correct size and well balanced throughout. His silhouette is a typical Lakeland and not a long necked, short backed generic terrier. He has the Oregill stamp as his head is flat and clean with a good length of foreface, a typical eye and small correctly placed ears culminating in a typical expression. He has a super reach of neck into a well angulated front assembly. His ribs extend well back to a short loin and he has a good set on.. He was well presented, moved true in front and just needs to tighten in his quarters. I considered him for the RCC.

PGD (5/1)

1 Nisyros Rigatoni for Lokilake (Clayton) – This dog has a typical head and expression, correctly constructed front and quarters and his ribs extend well back to a short loin. He moved true out and back and was presented in good order.

2 Kajsenborg’s Kelvin Cholla (Renoud Grappin) – Decent head and forehand, although he is a tad heavy over the shoulders. He held a level topline and moved true behind. Not the balance or front movement of the winner.

3 Team Spirit Tin Soldier Njk (Geenen)

OD (9/2)

I Ch Under Pressure Foxhouse (Schembri) – Avery typical Lakeland male when viewed from any angle. He is the correct size and well balanced. He has a lovely head that is flat and clean with the correct ratio of foreface and his eyes and ears are of the desired size and shape to enhance his expression. His neck is elegant and flows into a textbook front assembly that is correctly angulated and mirrors his quarter angles. His ribs are deep and extend well back to a short loin and he holds a level topline standing and moving. He was presented is super condition and moved true both ways with correct footfall when viewed from side profile, CC & BOB.

2 Nordlicht von Den Schönen Bergen (Schoneberg) – Another quality dog who has similar attributes to the winner but I preferred the overall balance of the winner. RCC

3 Ch Saredon Revere (Averis)

PB (3)

1 Stanstead Pandora Pitstop (Whitehead) -An exuberant puppy, which is what I like to see. She is correctly angulated front and rear and holds a level topline and a good tail set. Her head is clean and flat with the correct ratio of foreface, and she portrays a typical expression. She was sound both ways and presented in good order. BPIB

2 Cheston What About Us (Renoud Grappin) – Typical head and expression with a good reach of neck into well laid-back shoulders. Level topline and a good tail set. Presented in good order and moved soundly both ways.

3 Jaydavine Nature Diamond (Ablard)

JB (1/0)

1 Cheston What About Us (Renoud Grappin)

PGB (5/2)

1 Laketrix Pretty Things with Raniero (Betts) – A nice type who has a good head and expression, reachy neck into shoulders set well back, straight forelegs and good feet. Her quarters are well angulated, and she has a good tail set. Moved true both ways.

2 Oregill Voodoo Child (Johnston) – I have admired this bitch from the ringside and was pleased to get my hands on her today. She did not disappoint as she has a typical head and expression, correctly constructed in front and quarters and holds a level top line. She tends to stand a touch wide in front and would not cooperate with her handler when moving.

3 Team Spirit Belle Helene (Scholten)

LB (5/2)

1st Lokilake Rainbow Red (Clayton) - A very nice type who has a good head and expression, well made in front and quarters and her ribs are deep and extend well back to a short loin. Her topline is level and she has a good tail set. Presented in lovely condition and moved true both ways. RCC

2 Terrahawk Pocket Rocket (Everard & Rougvie & Cook) – This bitch portrays an elegant outline. She has a lovely head and expression, a short back and a good tail set. She was presented in excellent condition and moved true behind. I preferred the front movement and coat texture of the winner.

3 Dapperdax Holly at Wychvalley (Gill & Gibson)

OB (4/1)

1 Ph/sea Ch Big Slick Diamond Flush (Uy) - A lovely bitch who is the correct size and has bone and substance without appearing coarse. She has a super head and expression, correctly constructed front and quarters and a good tail set. Her ribs are deep and extend well back and she was presented in super condition. She moved true both ways and effortlessly when viewed from side profile. CC

2nd Jasmin von Den Schoenen Bergen (Schoneberg) – Another lovely bitch who has similar attributes to the winner but lost on front movement.

3 Nyamindi Spring Song (Everard & Rougvie & Cook)
