LAKELAND JUDGE SKC MAY 23
SKC May 2023 Lakeland Terriers
Overview Thank you to the committee of the SKC for the invitation to judge and to my two stewards for keeping me straight and of course to all the exhibitors who entered. As an overall view of the breed in the ring at the moment I have the following observations. Size and substance: while there is no lower height or weight in the standard to be “fit for function” a Lakeland should be capable of following the hounds all day on foot in the Lake District and still be up to the job of dispatching a fell fox underground if necessary, some exhibits lacked the size and substance to do that. Condition was an issue for some exhibits, while I am very grateful for the entry because I know how expensive it is to show dogs these days, those dogs shown in less than optimal coat and condition had to pay the price in the challenges. A dense harsh weather resisting coat with good undercoat is required in the standard.
JD 2:0
1st DCC and BOB Vickers Dams and Punter’s - Jodean Dallas his 3rd CC and still such a youngster, super dog, all male and so much presence in the ring, has the substance required for the job, stands well over his ground , he could be a little bigger, super masculine head, long neck, well laid shoulders, level top line held well on the move, tail on top with plenty behind, sound mover both ways, has reach, drive and terrier purpose in spades, presented in a jacket that was put down to the minute and in hard muscular condition.
2nd And RDCC Manson’s -Del Frislake True Blood -not as mature yet as 1st but great for size and length of leg, super clean head, ears a shade heavy but he uses them well, plenty of strength through muzzle, long neck, well laid shoulder, strong level top line, good bend of stifle, good colour, coat in great Nick and he was in well-muscled condition, sound mover fore and aft with purpose and drive, gave his handler a bit of a hard time but he will come through it with time.
LD 2:1
1st Anderson and Watt’s Louisville Nadal at Nisyros Attractive and sound red grizzle dog a shade more head for his size than I prefer and he could be bigger with more substance, good ears, good length of neck and well laid shoulder, level top line, tail on top with enough behind. Sound mover front and rear and looked good in profile but he can naturally stand a bit A frame after the up and back.
OD 4:1
1st Anderson and Watt’s Nisyros Somersby Smart dog with a lovely clean head good ears good length of neck well laid shoulder good top line tail on top with enough behind the tail moves with drive and purpose overall good make and shape I would prefer him a shade bigger and he had a tendency today to stand under himself at the rear.
2nd Young and McCluskey’s Dk ch N ch Nisyros Rough and Ready Presented in super coat and -condition lovely clean head, good ears and expression clean front, long neck, well laid shoulders, a shade longer than 1st, sound front and rear and moved with drive I just would prefer a higher tail set.
3rd P and J Clayton Nisyros Cappucino for Lokilake
PB 2:0 S
1st P and J Clayton 1st and BPIB and PG4 Lokilake Rainbow Red . Stunning colour presented in correct coat and condition, moved and showed well, a bit tentative on the table but she’s only a baby and she got over it quickly, overall good make and shape I would prefer more stifle bend.
2nd Rougvie Terrahawk Explorers Moon This is a very typey bitch of good size, substance and proportion for her age, clean feminine head, good ears, good expression, nice long neck and well laid shoulders, level top line, tail on top with a good shelf behind, coat condition and presentation could be more refined. Sadly she was pacing today.
JB 1:0
1st Anderson, Watt and H and H Quigg Jodean Chicago by Nisyros Very pretty clean head with good ears, nice clean front, short coupled, level top line, tail on top with a good shelf, moved soundly front and rear, held her top line in profile. Stifle bend and return of 2nd thigh could be more shapely and I would prefer a bit more of her all over.
PGB 1:0
1st Everard’s Terrahawk Pocket Rocket Nice Bitch, pretty & clean head, good length of neck and well laid shoulders strong level top line held well in profile tail on top with enough shelf presented in good coat and condition could do with a shade more substance, sound fore and aft and showed well.
