NORFOLK JUDGE CRUFTS 16

I witnessed no aggressive or poor temperaments today which in my opinion a very foreign to this pack terrier.
I witnessed no apple heads again which where some might find them attractive are by definition incorrect to the standard. Hardly any mouth imperfections from last time I judged the breed. Overall presentation was good.

Puppy dog (3)

1. Britten’s Krisma Dark N’Stormy . Rich b/t dog of great breed type. Great for size and overall shape. Loved his head, good neck and shoulder with straight front. Correct bone, well sprung ribs. Good on the move showing overall balance. Like him a lot. Presented, moved and showed well. BPIB.

2. Gee’s Watercroft Chilli Pepper. Red dog of similar size and type, lovely head and eye with correct bite. Straight level topline, shows great drive from behind but not quite the reach in front as 1st place, hence 2nd today. Well presented and handled.

3. Atkinson’s Alfie Boy At Manybrook. B/t longer and rangier in type than 1 & 2. He has a great coat in texture but is longer on the leg, bite OK.

Junior dog (2)

1. Newton’s Strathinver Sea The Stars. Red dog 15 months old, excellent breed type, put together in a great make and shape. Liked his head, eye and bite although could have a tad more strength. Correct bite. Short backed with a level topline, great on the move, showing balance with type both in front, rear and side gait. Coat texture ok although am sure will harshen up each strip with age. RCC.

2. Hamar’s Gordon’s Boy. Rangier in type than 1. Correct bite and harsh coated but a little too proud of his tail! Could be a little shorter in back.

Post Graduate dog (6-1)

1. Gee’s Watercroft Coin A Phrase. B/t 20 months old. Correct overall size and shape and good type. Handsome head with correct eye shape and good bi8te. Good use of ears and ear placement. Great coat colour and texture. Front OK. Short in back, correct tail set and carriage. Good on the move but not quite the reach in front.

2. Gee’s Watercroft Hot News. B/t of great type. Liked his head and expression. Correct coat and good bone. Front assembly not as good as 1 but very good for type so could forgive this.

3. Lloyd’s Orison Custom Cut. Rangier in type than 1 & 2 but an honest dog, not glamorous but functional. No furnishings but well boned. Head of correct proportions with good bite, moved well once settled.

Limit dog (3-1)

1. Jenkins’ Kinsridge Back Chat. This dog filled my eye standing and did not disappoint on the move. Excellent breed type, strong head but not overrounded, just the slight rounding the standard required. Correct eye shape although could be a shade darker. Correct bite with a strong jaw. Presentation is excellent of his deep red hard wiry coat. Balanced angulation both in front and behind, short back with level topline. Comes alive on the move and delighted to award him the DCC, his third I understand. A credit to the breed and his breeder!

2. Mounfield’s Arderry Son Of A Gun. Slightly longer cast than 1st, lovely head and expression. Great bite with strong jaw. Good neck and shoulder but front could be straighter. Would prefer a straighter tail. A very good quality Norfolk male overall, presented, moved and showed well.

Open dog (4)

1. Gee’s Ch. Watercroft In A Pickle. Red dog of correct size, head shape and bite correct, a little heavy in ear. Good overall type. Neck and shoulder OK, front straight but not quite the reach on the move. Enough bone, positive drive on the move from behind. Presented well.Y

2. Ackling & New’s Ruby Ruben Sh.CM. Quality Norfolk, OK for size but good type and balanced correct head proportion, ear shape and size. Harsh coated honest dog well off for bone, could be a little sounder both fore and aft but overall shows grand breed type in a balanced structure.

3. Smith’s Javidel Just May Have To. Not the strength in head of 1 & 2, slightly longer cast that 1 & 2. More angulation behind than in front which shows a lack of balance on the move, he shows himself well and presented in great form.

Good citizens dog (1)

1. Brown’s Dajean Dotty’s Digger. Enjoying his day out at Crufts with his owners today, Nice head and expression. OK for bone. Could be shorter in back. Moved and showed OK.

Puppy Bitch(2-0)

1 . Gee's Watercroft Saffron Very pretty feminine 10-11 month old, liked her overall size & shape. Shirt backed with a level topline. Correct head & eye with a lovely expression. Good bone, moved & showed well with great presentation. Another consistant winner from this kennel.

2. Corfield's Langdenfarm Ruby Tuesday Not quite the quality of 1, pretty head not co-operating with her handler today but should be proud as did her best. Enough bone and coat.

Junior Bitch (3,0)

1 Dixon & Davies Perrisblu Pricilla Red bitch with correct head eye and bite. Dark eye, neck OK, Shoth backed with level topline. Great on the move showing great balance. Great coat and condition. Presented & handled very well.

2 Devereaux’s Vichea Heavans above. Coat OK have seen her much better presented. Very feminine head, good bone, dark eye with correct ears. Straight tail, come together once settled on the move.

3 Gee’s Watercroft Pop Picker Good headed bitch short tight jacket which needs time to fill. Good neck & shoulders but longer cast than 1 & 2, does need more body.

Post Graduate bitch (9-3)

1. Saltmarsh’s Pipridges Holly. Red bitch, bigger in frame than bone but still typey. Strong head with good strength and jaw, correct bite. Short back with a level topline. Could move with more enthusiasm but very balanced on the move. A good honest Norfolk.

2. Devereaux’s Vichea Cash and Carry. Red bitch of great type, short back with a level topline. Great head, eye & bite. Far too much enthusiasm for owner to control. Got glimpses of correct movement, could have been better presented today.

3. Lloyd’s Orison Calm Attitude. B/t, nice head with correct bite, strong jaw, not the overall type of 1 & 2. Good bone, short back and level topline. Could be a little stronger behind giving more drive.

Limit bitch (7-1)

1. Devereaux’s Vichea Little Gem. Deceptively correct Norfolk bitch of good size, overall make and shape. Red wheaten in colour, lovely head and expression, good bite. Correct neck, short back with a level topline, great reach and drive on the move once settled. Well sprung ribs with correct body Proud to award her the RCC.

2. Britten’s Krisma Nip In The Air. When I first witnessed this girl walk into the ring I thought she would be my winner. When going over her she is a little leggier in appearance and not the depth in rib as 1st. Narrower in her overall frame as needs to drop, in profile paints a lovely picture. Could have a little more layback in shoulder, not as sound as 1st. Rich red in colour, presented and handled well.

3. Darnell’s Jacquidon Next Sensation. B/t, a little bigger than 1 & 2. Strong head with good bite and strong jaw, enough bone but very fond of her food! Losing a little weight would help her exhibit more positive movement.

Open bitch (3) A trio of well deserved champion girls.

1. Jenkins’ Ch. Kinsridge Top Tip. 2 ½ y/o bitch of amazing breed type coupled with balance and soundness. Showing the cheeky Norfolk temperament we all love. Correct head proportions, slightly rounded and well defined stop. Strong jaw with correct bite. Short back with level topline, equal angles both in front and in the rear. Which has well let down hocks , great on the move, presented and handled in excellent order. Proud to award the kennel both CCs and to whitness my BOB bitch to win terrier group 4.

2. Gee’s Ch. Watercroft Top Tia. Similar in overall type to 1st, not quite as sound as 1 in front or rear but a great type of Norfolk. Correct head with dark eye and good bite, enough strength in jaw, a worthy Champion presented and handled well.
3. Smith’s Ch. Javidel Definitely Maybe. B/t not putting 100% in today, great overall body good head and expression, longer cast than 1 & 2 but not long by any means. 1 & 2 are ultra short. A deserved Champion, presented well.

Good Citizens bitch (1)

1. Owen’s Brickin Happy Dance. Head on, great bone, coat coming through. Enjoying her day. On her own in this class, well done to the owners for qualifying.

To my stewards Kim Lathaen & Dave Franks. A few thank you’s. First of all to the Crufts committee for thinking highly enough of me to judge my first love, the Norfolk, at Crufts but at the tender age of 39! An achievement to judge but nonetheless at this young age I have been allowed to experience the event at the centenary show. To both mum and dad, although mum no longer with us, without whom from the age of 11 their unconditional support to drive me to any dog event, ringcraft, open or championship show I wanted to attend my passion for dogs would not have been so fulfilled. Thank you’s could never be completed without gratitude to my mentor Martin Phillips who spend and gave so much time in my early years until now to impart any knowledge he could.

We all have the breed at heart as breeders and exhibitors and can disagree as long as we all remember we are only custodians of the wonderful breed the Norfolk and to share humility, sportsmanship at all events, and work together for the good of this breed and dogs in general, we should all remember.

I was so pleased with the overall depth in quality although not a huge entry in number.
