NORFOLK SKC MAY 14 Judge(s): MRS C THOMPSON-MORGAN Norfolk Terriers A small entry reflecting the travelling distance for many, however I had some lovely quality dogs & I was very pleased with my winners. The main point that struck me was the number of large round eyes, some getting a bit light too. The Standard asks for "oval shaped, dark brown or black” These were in very short supply today. The large round eyes detract from a typical Norfolk expression, especially when they are light too. Tails I paid more attention to than in the past although I wouldn’t penalise an otherwise good dog just because of its tail, however I think it is time that as breeders we started to try & improve what clearly does not come naturally to Norfolks. PD (1) 1 Phillips’ Blakens I Look To You, typical low to ground naughty b/t puppy. Lovely bone, nice head for age, prefer more oval eye. Moved well in front but needs to muscle up behind. Good length of rib. Body needs to mature, lovely tail carriage. JD (4) A very nice class, splitting hairs here. Both 1 & 2 are short backed well balanced dogs. 1 Gee’s Watercroft In A Pickle, very attractive head, correct muzzle to skull proportions, good stop, width of skull & neat ear carriage, just prefer more oval eye. Ample bone & substance, compact & low to the ground. Moved well in front, needs more hind angulation. Tail carriage acceptable. RCC; 2 Stevenson’s Brickin Countrywide, slightly more bone than 1 but not the body or strength of skull. Dark eye, could be more oval. Great length of rib, a rare asset. Tail more curled than 1; 3 Atkinson’s Blakens Sugar Candy Dips. LD (1) 1 Phillips’ Blakens The Kandy Man Kan, outstanding in type, strong skull, very good stop, again eye rather too round. Compact & strong, low to the ground. Great bone & excellent spring of rib. However short upper arm & poor hind angulation meant his movement let him down & he didn’t put all in on the move either. OD (3,1a) 1 Newton’s Strathinver Smart Enough, & today he was & shown in very hard condition. The best mover in the dogs by a long way he covered the ground & moved true both coming & going. Good width of skull, correct stop, strong wedge shaped muzzle. Excellent spring of rib & adequate bone. Could be longer in rib. A compact & very strong dog, challenging his handler. Short back. Could be lower to the ground but he has a good depth of body to compensate, nicely set & carried tail. CC won on overall movement along with type; 2 Green’s Wharfvalley Diamond Star, looking the part today in excellent jacket & showing his socks off. Unfortunately not the head or movement of 1 but lower to ground than 1 & lovely large teeth. High set tail but not carried as well as 1. PB (2) 1 Gee’s Watercroft Top Tipple, gassy puppy, short, cobby, compact, low to the ground. Lovely typical head, good width of skull, good stop, strong muzzle, nice correct eye. Good spring of rib, great hindquarters, front movement just spoiled by short upper arm. BP; 2 Saltmarsh’s Pipridges Holly, lovely dark oval eye, something that is in short supply today. Excellent spring of rib, good bone, low to the ground. Not the hindquarters of 1 & longer cast. Coat just coming. Correct for tail shape & carriage. LB (0). JB (4,1) 1 Gee’s Watercroft Hot Diamonds, small, keen & low to the ground, very nice head, adequate stop, well angulated hindquarters which she used well. Good spring of rib & in excellent coat. Tail well carried, just moving a bit wide in front & could have more bone; 2 Phillips, Gullick & Tate’s Jaeva Play The Ace, outstanding head & expression, well proportioned skull & muzzle, good bone & spring of rib, moved well in profile. Prefer her to be lower to the ground with a shorter neck to fit the Standard requirement; 3 Green’s Whafvalley Wild Child. OB (4,1) 1 Phillips’ Ch Blakens Sugar Candy Kisses, loved her, very typical, cobby, low to ground, in excellent coat, good well proportioned head, nice width to skull, correct bite, eye could be more oval & for perfection would prefer slightly shorter back. Very short tail! Correct bone, excellent spring of rib, Showed to perfection, & with her correct construction moved very well both ways & in profile. Had the edge in overall type & presentation on the dog when challenging for BOB. CC & BOB, delighted to see she went G3; 2 Gee’s Watercroft Top Of The Pops, similar type to 1 having similar virtues, cobby low to ground & slightly shorter in the back but unlike 1 not extending behind & a little wide in front. In lovely coat, with a well carried tail, unlucky to meet 1. RCC; 3 Smith’s Javidel Deinitely Maybe. CATHY THOMPSON-MORGAN |
