NORFOLK JUDGE WELSH KC 10

Norfolk Terriers

Many moons ago when I judged Norfolks at this very show the late Marjorie Bunting took me to task for being negative in my report. So just in case she is up there keeping an eye on things I will try to be moderate. But I believe it is a Swedish trait to be blunt and tell it how it is, point out the good, the bad & the ugly.

Generally speaking I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the males. The building where our ring was did not help, it was very noisy & with plenty of barking terriers close by many normally switched on show dogs were easily distracted. A concrete floor with agricultural odours is, of course, preferable to being out in a wet muddy ring but it is very difficult for the dogs to truly sparkle.

Some failed in head quality & type, I could have done with a few more classical Cracknor heads! Front movement throughout was not up to much but that is true in a lot of breeds. Long tails were not at all as offensive as I had feared, coats were of good texture & temperaments first class naturally.

MPD (1

) 1 Thompson-Morgan’s Belleville Silk Tie, 7 months, not quite sure about things in this very noisy hall but with the help of his clever handler he did get his act together quite well eventually. Good coat texture, moved reasonably well behind, good quarters. Head needs to improve, bit loose in front movement.

PD (6,1a)

1 Stevenson’s Brickin Better Be Good, 11 months red, hard coat, quality head, dark eyes, broad skull, shapely body, well sprung ribs, good outline, well muscled hindquarters, confident mover, showed well when he concentrated. Bit of a fidget. BPD & RCC;

2 Thompson-Morgan’s Belleville Lord Angel, 9 months b/t, harsh jacket, a real hooligan. Short back, low set hocks, good body & bone. Not the ear carriage of 1, bit restless standing & moving, feeling hot;

3 Mountfield’s Arderry Sky Rocket.

JD (4,1)

1 Green’s Wharfvalley Diamond Star, held himself together better than his brother who finished 2nd. Strong body, well sprung ribs, well proportioned, coat in good order. I preferred head & expression of

2 Atkinson’s Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop, low set hocks, excellent bone & body, moved well behind but rather wide in front. Lovely head & expression;

3 Simpson’s Umbrage Longton cum Megalex.

PGD (3,1)

Not a good class.

1 Rayner’s Mstease Making Mayhem, b/t, smart & showy but would like him more masculine in head. Short back, consistent showman. Failed in front movement;

2 Owens’ Harrijen Tegwen Tangle, dark red, mouth not 100 per cent. Dark intelligent eyes, excellent coat texture, narrow in front & front movement.

LD (6,2)

Disappointing for a Limit class.

1 Smith’s Javidel Come What May, moved better than the others in this class. Well proportioned, harsh jacket, pleasing head, firm fit body;

2 List’s Settrenda Alfie Mac from Nicnips, keen intelligent expression, attractive head, short back, good body. Failed in front movement. Litter brother to RCC bitch;

3 Owens’ Hoathnor Jackanory.

OD (6)

1 Thompson-Morgan’s Belleville Angello, red, well coated, happy showman, well proportioned, excellent presentation, good bone, legs & feet, animated mover, a comfortable winner here, quite a good head, expressive eyes. CC;

2 Stevenson’s Penmire Wild Bramble by Brickin, red of good type & quality, broad skull, well defined stop, harsh jacket, strong body. Not always using his neck to advantage & a shade untidy in front movement;

3 Green’s Wharfvalley Kir Royale.

MPB (4,1

) Impossible class.

1 Thompson-Morgan’s Belleville Silk Stockings, 7 months, reasonable shape but needs a stronger head & a little more bone. Good body, moved OK behind. All over the place in front;

2 List’s Nicnips Anya, 6 months red, sturdy body, better size than 1. Flying her ears, bit long in foreface. Good coat;

3 List’s Nicnips Aliss.

PB (5,2)

1 Phillips’ Blakens Toffee Kisses, 11 months b/t, very finished look for a puppy, lovely outline & proportions, compact body, excellent topline & quarters, all quality head, dark eyes, neat ears, carried herself proudly, positive showgirl, moved with drive behind. Shade wide coming towards me but a vivacious exciting puppy. BP, CC & BOB;

2 Domachie’s Jenks Truly Scrumptious, 10 months red, harsh jacket, intelligent expression, happy showgirl. Failed on front & front movement. Hind action adequate;

3 Mitchell & Wilding’s Zazmeer Next In Line.

JB (8,4)

1 Phillips’ Vision Express at Blakens, not very settled but moved & showed reasonably well when she remembered what to do. Pleasing head, good tailset, well sprung ribs, well presented coat of good texture. Handler worked hard to hold her interest;

2 Green’s Wharfvalley Diamond Diva, red, harsh jacket, expressive eyes. Would like a stronger muzzle. Showed & responded well to her handler. Movement not her best feature;

3 Simpson’s Titanium Farandole for Megalex.

PGB (5,2)

1 Simpson’s Megalex Elusive Dream, red, a bit plump but good outline & proportions. Attractive head & expression, lovely coat texture. Untidy in front movement;

2 Owens’ Penmire Lilac, up to size, coat ready for a strip & presentation generally could be improved. Good body & bone, delightful personality. Ears on the big side, needs to move with more drive & purpose.

LB (6,1)

Very good class.

1 Cooper’s Settrenda Saucy Sox, lovely make & shape, well bodied & coated youngster in splendid form, I liked her head & expression, broad skull & when she used her ears properly really looked the part. Clean neckline, firm body & quarters, excellent topline, sound mover. Easily distracted but very close to getting the CC. RCC;

2 Hurrion’s Valentines Cherry Crumble, feminine, showy, made the most of herself posed & on the move, expressive eyes, good quarters. Coat not at its best;

3 Phillips’ Blakens Party Popper.

OB (4,2)

1 Claydon’s Brymarden Copper Kettle, good type & size, feminine head, dark eyes, firm body, well sprung ribs, compact shape, great coat & condition, well handled, keen showgirl. Needs more reach & drive in movement;

2 Atkinson’s Moortop Marys Choice, good honest bitch, excellent coat texture, attractive head, intelligent dark eyes, good topline, well boned, moved OK behind. A bit lazy & wide in front.
