PARSON JACK RUSSELL JUDGE CRUFTS 13

Parson Russell Terriers

Thank you to all the exhibitors for a truly lovely day at Crufts 2013. In this multinational entry there was quality right down the line in most classes, & such was the depth in OD that some who I have placed highly before did not even get in the final line-up.

I was delighted with my two CC winners. BOB went to Int/Multi Ch Rustic Russell P Belvedere. I judged him as a youngster in Denmark, & loved him then. Now he is the mature, finished article, shown to perfection on a loose lead, both standing & on the move, & he never gave up for a moment, even in the group ring where he did the breed proud, & gained some lovely comments from my fellow judges. BOS was an old favourite of mine, Ch Alne Tribute to Riplington, who complemented the dog perfectly, just slightly lacking his showmanship, which tipped the final decision in his favour. BP was a very promising young lady, Alnecroft Sovereign at Lyonmill who headed some lovely babies, all enjoying their day out.

Temperaments were, as expected, absolutely impeccable, indeed VB posed something of a problem as these mature ladies bounced around the ring with great joie de vivre thoroughly enjoying their moment in the spotlight once more, thus making movement difficult to assess in some cases. Bites were good, with lovely clean teeth although in some they could have been a little larger. Coats too, were pretty good, only one or two slightly soft, & none of the really untypical coarse wiry coats that used to be seen a few years ago. Heads were variable, some really lovely, again nothing coarse & heavy, but a few a little deep in stop & lacking strength in muzzle & foreface. Size was much better than it has been, nothing too large, but all with decent bone, & virtually every dog was spannable. If I have to be critical, there were some rather untypical round eyes, & it is once again in movement that many failed. Fronts have improved tremendously, only one or two with the short upper arm & upright shoulder that restricts forward extension & most with decent angulation at the rear. So why was the hind action so poor on so many? Maybe some serious road work would improve many exhibits beyond all recognition? I’m not suggesting that the terriers here today were not fit – on the contrary, they were all in beautiful condition, neatly groomed, sparkling white & well muscled, not too fat & not underweight either. My hands were as clean at the end of the day as they had been when I started. No need for chalk here!

As always when judging there has to be a balance between type & movement. I still think of myself as a breed specialist, & as such will always try to go for type first & foremost. However, this is a breed that was designed to travel over rough terrain, & yet arrive at an earth fit enough to enter & face a fox. He must be spannable & his movement should be economical, with reach & drive to enable him to cover the ground tirelessly. When judging therefore, compromises sometimes have to be made. It’s important to reward the virtues of the dogs that are entered, rather than penalising their faults. In general it was easy to find a class winner that had good type, excellent conformation & the desired movement, but in some cases I had to give a little on type to acknowledge superior movement in the lower placings.

VD (4)

What a super class to start the day!

1 Nordstrom’s Int/Nord Ch Danscan’s Frederick, super mover, keeping his excellent topline at all times. Good coat, excellent tailset;

2 Chapman’s Foxwarren Tomass, immediately the dilemma of type versus movement. Easily spannable with a more correct head than the winner, a really typical example of the breed, but not quite the side extension of the winner & not quite so accurate in hind movement;

3 Brown & Grange’s Ch Afinlea Road Side Skipper, quite solid all through but still moving out well, lovely head & excellent shoulder.

PD (4)

A difficult class with all having different virtues.

1 Hughes’ Ruffntuff Regal, good type, but carrying a bit of puppy fat, which made him look a touch cobby, nevertheless his nice size made him easily spannable, neat feet, won this class on his good hind action;

2 Rutter’s Boultmoor Badge Of Honour, very smart youngster, but a little down on his pasterns, lovely head, excellent angulation, just needs to tighten up all round to complete a promising picture;

3 Stevens’ Wightline Grandmaster, up to size but his excellent quality full coat made him look bigger than he really is. Excellent head & correct topline. Again just needs to strengthen behind.

JD (6)

1 Chapman’s Foxwarren Traveller, just lovely for type, darkest of eyes of correct shape, beautiful head, correct size, easily spannable, a real old fashioned Parson. He needs a little more maturity & to strengthen in movement, then he will trouble the best;

2 B Badge Of Honour;

3 Roberts & Todd’s Chataway Primate, the best mover in this class with good angulations & of the correct size. Beautifully presented, a little deep in stop & short in muzzle.

YD (2)

1 Filipecka’s Zulus Czaka vom Schwarzwald, lovely head, dark eye, excellent coat, good angulation, excellent topline, tends to stand a little wide in front;

2 Selby’s Jacksden Jimmyjack, a close decision. Excellent movement, good bone, excellent angulation – I just preferred the head & eye of 1.

PGD (6)

1 Blair & Hadley’s Cleeve Hill Kasper, real quality here, lovely head, excellent coat, correct size, excellent topline & good angulation leading to reach & drive on the move;

2 Davies’ Goldfern Grand Lad, very close up, I was nit picking between these two nice boys. This one scored with his good bone & excellent coat, just not quite as precise in hind action;

3 Griffiths’ Digaden Windrush Chase, excellent head, decent length of neck, but fraction short in upper arm, slightly low tailset. Another good mover.

LD (9)

1 Roberts and Murray’s Pacolito Prymeval Mindlen, in sparkling condition & well handled to get the best from him, especially when he set his mind to moving out with real reach & drive. Not quite a classical head shape, but a correct topline & tailset & enough breed type to take this class over 2;

2 Wilson’s Pacolito High Phlyer to Dragonmoor, who was more typy, up to size but still spannable. Better hind action would have won him the class;

3 Broadberry’s Ratscallion Tactical Move, the first word of the breed standard is ‘workmanlike’ & that is a good description of this lad. Handy sized, easily spannable, excellent coat, good head. Doesn’t make the best of himself on the stack, but comes alive on the move.

OD (19)

Wow! I made a cut to eight & still left out some really quality dogs that I would have been more than happy to place on another day.

1 Horge’s Int/Multi Ch Rustic Russell P Belvedere, judged him as a youngster in Denmark & liked him then. With maturity he is even better. This is the complete package, beautifully handled & moved out on a loose lead to demonstrate the correct economical action, perfectly balanced both on the stack & on the move with real reach & drive. Fit as a fiddle, quality coat in excellent order, good topline & tailset, & never stopped showing for a second, even throughout the group judging, where he was much admired by many. CC & BOB;

2 Hooley’s Ch Hoolmark Johnny Ringo, it’s a cliché to say ‘unlucky to meet 1’ but nevertheless true in this case. I’ve done him well before & still like him immensely but today even his beautiful head, excellent movement & easily spannable body couldn’t quite take him into top spot. RCC;

3 Vaughan’s Ch Parruss Comanche Chief, another truly great dog with the best of presentation & condition, lovely head & moved well. So, so hard to split these three super dogs – & with others of true quality standing behind them as well.

GCD (1)

1 Towler’s Mindlen McKenna at Ansabak, nice size & shape & moved much better here than in his previous class. Just a baby & needs time to mature but shows promise.

VB (8)

A lovely group of mature ladies, all in super condition & a credit to their owners. A special word of thanks to the very sporting owner who showed her beautiful girl but withdrew before the placings were made because of our close connection in another breed.

1 Roberts & Murray’s Ch Mindlen Mataura, nice head, good coat, correct angulation & topline, moved out really well;

2 Bull & Stark’s Clauval Japonica Lady, so full of herself that it was difficult to assess her movement at first but eventually settled to demonstrate good reach & drive, lovely head, good overall construction & excellent coat;

3 Cutler’s Trumpmoor Exmoor Appey Daze, a really typy bitch of correct size, excellent coat, good head, again moving out well.

PB (8)

Nice class of promising youngsters.

1 Liddell’s Alncroft Sovereign at Lyonmill, lovely head, very accurate movement, good topline & tailset, excellent angulation. BP;

2 Walker’s Matsstars Lily Of The Valley, super smooth coat, excellent reach & drive when she settled, good angulation & topline;

3 Blake’s Pacolito Phrankly, did her best to throw away this placing with her enthusiasm on the move, excellent coat, nice size, easily spannable.

JB (6)

1 Hooley’s Hoolmark Boppin Robyn, really loved this youngster who is a full sister to the RDCC winner & of the same nice type. The most beautiful of heads, excellent coat & presentation. Moved really well, she just needs a little more time. RCC;

2 Liddell’s Lyonmill Daydream, lovely size, excellent coat, another I liked a lot, just not quite the drive of 1 but a very nice bitch;

3 Shelton’s Boultmoor True Delight, excellent coat, good head, moved well, keeping a correct topline.

YB (8)

1 Kjempengren’s Revefotens Rubah Betina, another who really appealed for type, with a lovely head, good coat, excellent topline & super movement. Pushed very hard for the RCC;

2 Horge’s Rustic Russell Tante Agathe, very close up to 1. Lovely type, excellent coat, moved & showed very well, just not quite as perfect in shoulder & topline;

3 Collis’ Riplington Black Cherry, lovely! Head, shoulder, topline, size, angulation – she has it all, just determined today to throw it all away on the move.

PGB (15)

A lovely class.

1 Bigland’s Araceta Beatrice from Pacolito, fit & active bitch with excellent movement, correct angulations & lovely neck & shoulder;

2 Coogan’s Pacolito Phorbidden via Breurn, a workmanlike bitch with nice head & good feet, she came alive on the move;

3 Smith & Moon’s Alncroft In Gold, a very showy bitch, handled & presented to make the most of her virtues. Excellent neck & shoulder, good topline, just not quite the extension & precision in movement of those above her.

LB (16)

1 Walker’s Ammanday Apple, very nice indeed. Good head, excellent coat, lovely shoulder & rib, very lightly broken harsh coat, so sound, moving with a real ‘hunting gait’;

2 Nixon’s Gonetoground Go For Gold, super presentation, another who excelled in shoulder & rib, could have just a little less stop & more strength in muzzle;

3 Roberts & Todd’s Shooting Star over Chataway, slightly shorter in back & not quite so precise in movement, but nevertheless completed a lovely trio.

OB (13)

1 Collis’ Ch Alncroft Tribute to Riplington, have done her well before & I still love her. Classic type, lovely head, excellent coat, beautifully constructed throughout. CC;

2 Mejlander-Larsen & Kjempengren’s Cent World/Nordic/Ger/Fin Ch Revefotens Little Spark, not the classic head of 1 but lovely for size, excellent coat, good rib & outstanding movement;

3 Newport’s Digaden Glamouruss, another I have done well in the past, lovely head, excellent construction, handy size & super workmanlike movement.

GCB (5)

1 Doyle’s Ilexquercus Rosy Rustic, handy sized workmanlike bitch with good coat, nice angulation & excellent topline;

2 Kannangara’s Parruss Twist Of Lemon, good movement, excellent coat, easily spanned;

3 Kannangara’s Sherosco Christmas Rose, excellent coat, good movement, ears a little untidy.
