PARSON JACK RUSSELL MANCHESTER 14 Judge: Mrs Kim Denby-Gardener BEST OF BREED : 1402 CHAPMAN Mr E W Foxwarren Picasso PARSON JACK RUSSELL JUDGE MANCHESTER 14 Parson Russell Terriers Many thanks to the show, stewards & especially the exhibitors, for a lovely day. Given the atrocious weather that has affected the country, I was prepared to have to forgive some slightly out of condition dogs, so it is a credit to you that most were in such good shape, & most did appear workmanlike, active & agile. There are two issues which I seem to always go on about & I’m doing it again as it does affect the results, & in the longer term, where I think the breed is going. The first is that the Standard asks for dogs that are bold & friendly. Well certainly most gave me a lick, but some were a little unhappy or reserved & it makes even the best constructed dogs look less than they actually are – these are terriers & I prefer some attitude & to see happy tails. The second issue is rear movement, which is still all over the place, with some dogs very wide which leads to a lack of drive, & there is a huge variation still between those that are too straight behind & those that are more exaggerated. PD (4,2a) 1 Chapman’s Foxwarren Picasso, very eyecatching 8 month old puppy dog. Nicely put together all through. Has an excellent coat & pelt. Lovely head, eye, expression & pigment, correct shape & sized ears. Good rib, nothing exaggerated, & so well balanced. Well set tail. Fabulous attitude. He moves beautifully, although a slight tendency to be a bit wide at front, but I think that’s his age. Spanable. My only negative comment about him would be that I hope he doesn’t grow any more. CC, BOB & BP; 2 Neild’s Legierat Lexi of Lochinvar, 9 months old but much more of a baby. Nicely put together & easy span. Most beautiful expression & an excellent shoulder. His front movement is great but his rear is distracting as his tail is not his fortune & he is a bit wide behind. Nice attitude. JD (2,1) 1 Farrow’s Glencymreig Two In One, a pity he was being rather silly, but perhaps not too surprising as a 15 month old male, unfortunately it made movement hard to assess. Right up to size height wise but very spannable & flexible. Fabulous smooth coat & excellent thick pelt. Pigment very dark. Typical smooth head with beautiful eye leading on to an excellent strong neck which flows in to his lovely shoulders. Well muscled, I would like a little bit more body weight, but that will probably come when he matures. PGD (1) 1 Hall’s Frithgarth Magic Sandpiper, such a pity that his coat is not better as he is really a lovely dog. His pigment though is very good & he has the loveliest dark expressive eyes. Loved his attitude when standing & moving. Had one of the best height to length ratios on the day, which helps towards his truly excellent movement. A proper ‘old fashioned’ Russell. LD (1) 1 Blair & Hadley’s Cleeve Hill Kasper, a dog I’m very fond of although he can be his own worst enemy when distracted by other dogs. His handler did well with him today. I would prefer him a shade longer but other than that there is so much to like. Good wedge shaped head with good dark eye, small ears, excellent teeth & bite. Strong neck, good ribs, just spannable. Nice set of tail. Good feet. Moving really well & with plenty of terrier attitude. RCC. OD (3,1) 1 Farrow’s Ch Glenholm Happy Go Lucky, absolutely classic Parson, as you’d expect from his breeding. Much more my type than second, although today he was a little heavy & rather over excited. He has classic head & markings. Really harsh flat coat & good pelt. Good rib & angulation. No doubt as to why he is a champion; 2 Bowden’s Nado Shiz’s Tacoma X-Runner to Pacolito, although not so much my type overall I did love his jaunty attitude. He was showing & shown really well & is very eyecatching. He has a very impressive straight front, good rib, lovely feet. Not quite the coat or pelt of 1. VD (2) I so love veteran classes. Both dogs seemed so relaxed & happy & enjoying their day out. 1 Hall’s Frithgarth Jack Frost, possibly the best moving dog on the day although a tad close behind. He is very hairy but it’s a really good harsh thick coat, with great pelt. Well proportioned all through, just spannable. Good head, eye & ears. Well boned, good rib & well angulated front & rear. BVD; 2 Chapman’s Foxwarren Tomass, happily belying his age, he presents a picture of what he is, a typical working terrier who is also of show quality. Close fitting harsh coat; very fit dog with good bone, but not moving quite as well as 1. He has good eye & ears, & excellent feet – invaluable to a worker. PB (10,1) 1 Tinegate’s Milvinae All Aboard, very eyecatching classy bitch who although only 8 months was showing maturity in attitude & presence. Very neat & tidy & feminine while still strong enough for work. The best of coats & pelts. Nice head with good pigment & good mouth. Has good length of rib & is well boned but spannable. A little close on the move; 2 Shelton’s Pacolito Phirstry, rather different in type, but had such an appealing way with her. Really good coat, which put her ahead of her sister. Super pigment, nice feet. Well shown & moved so well, especially given her age; 3 Biggs’ Pacolito Phirsthand. JB (4) Interesting class as a wide variance in ages, which was quite obvious even without asking. 1 Rawlinson’s Glencymreig Lunar Eclipse over Halshimoor, 15 months old & maturing nicely, a happy & expressive bitch. Has the most fabulous head, coat & pelt. Overall she is nicely proportioned, with nice length of rib. Has good eye, ears & pigment. Strongly boned, good feet. Her downfall is her tail which could be straighter, but it is set correctly. Well shown & moving out well & I felt she could keep going forever. She is a picture of a feminine, unexaggerated, working terrier. CC; 2 Woods’ Ardencote Triple, such a baby at only 9 months, but a very appealing, pretty & feminine bitch who overall is a lovely shape with beautiful head. Good attitude. Liked her eye, pigment, bone & length of rib. Very easy span; 3 Bigland’s Heythrop Tehya. PGB (6,1) 1 Fielding’s Matsstars Lady’s Mantle at Starfield, very much my type, & to me a classic Parson. Very pretty feminine bitch. Has the darkest of eyes, good mouth & ears. Lovely bone & length & shape of rib, well balanced angles front & rear. Spannable. Well set on & carried tail. Would prefer a better coat. She looks so good when she relaxes, especially on the move as she has such an easy gait; 2 Shelton’s Boultmoor True Delight, again different in type but she was so fit & is well put together. Moved so much better than the last time I judged her. Has very good coat & pelt & a nice long rib. Well shown & very showy. Both these bitches had really good length to their tails as well, considering that they are undocked; 3 Neild’s Logierat Little Lotte. LB (7) My first two were really rather similar to look at which is interesting as such different breeding.1 has the longer legs, possibly a fraction too much, while I would prefer second to be slightly longer on the leg! 1 White’s Ebblechase Elspeth, no secret that I love her, I just wish she was a bit more animated. While she is tall she is in no way big & is very easy to span. Correct wedge shaped head with excellent pigment, lovely shaped eye, neat ears & big teeth. Nice reach & arch of neck leading to well placed shoulders. Good coat & excellent pelt. Good length of rib, correct rise over loin & good set to tail. Good feet. Excellent movement; 2 Sutton’s Alnecroft Maid An Issue at Springbeck, pretty, animated bitch, enjoying her day more obviously than 1. Has excellent pigment, & lovely dark eyes. Good mouth & feet, both as it should be from a working terrier line. Well shaped body & excellent tailset. Well shown; 3 Farrow’s Halshimoor Final Fling. OB (2) 1 Kannangara’s Parruss Twist Of Lemon, older than I realised, she is still so full of herself & works so hard to please her owner. Has fabulous coat & pelt, body is spannable & flexible, good head although she will fly her ears! Wonderful pigment. Nice feminine size & correct height to length. Good long ribs & correct rise over loin, well set & carried tail. When she gets speed correct her movement is a joy to watch. RCC; 2 Bull & Stark’s Tarara Boom de Ay, slightly taller bitch, very pretty head & the darkest of pigment. Also flying her ears a little. She is so good in so many parts – pelt, coat, rib, but (& I’ve said before) I wish she had more rear angulation. VB (2) 1 Pell’s Olliebark That’s My Girl, rather more my type, she is slightly heavier in build than 2 but I think overall better height to length ratios. Had a better attitude to showing today which won her the class. Has a lovely ‘old fashioned’ look, excellent head & expressive eye. Good body, really good rib, correct loin & correct tailset. Nice feet. Rough, harsh coat; 2 Bull & Stark’s Clauval Japonica Lady, overall she is a beautiful shape but a fraction too leggy & she seemed worried, although when she got going moved the best I’ve ever seen her. Correct shaped head with dark markings & good pigment. Good mouth & teeth. Good harsh close fitting coat, & nice pelt. Good rib & rear with correctly placed tail. KIM DENBY-GARDNER |
