PARSON JACK RUSSELL WELKS 11

Parson Russell Terriers
It is just short of two years since I last judged this breed at the other end of the country, I found it interesting to see how some dogs that I judged then had changed with maturity over that time, one can only ever judge the dog on the day. I found type quite varied & it is disappointing to see that the breed is losing some breed specific points which all add up to make the Parson Russell Terrier; the strong slightly arched loin & moderately high set tail unfortunately seems to be giving way to straight toplines & high set tails, there were not many thick loose pelts & undercoats were often lacking. This is a dog of moderation not exaggeration & I felt that a few exhibits were over angulated behind while others were lacking angulation. There have always been two types of wedge shaped head in the breed, one slightly wider in skull than the other, my personal preference is towards the later slightly ‘stronger’ head provided the cheek bones are not prominent. However, it seemed to be the narrower skull that was in the majority. With the permission of the owner/handler I like to lift exhibits from the table to feel balance & I am glad to say that none were front heavy. This was not the case a few years back, however quite a few exhibits were difficult to span either because they were overweight or simply had too large a ribcage. On the plus side I feel that as the years have progressed lay of shoulder & return of upper arm have improved & as a result so has front movement.

PD (5)

1 Newport’s Digaden Playing The Field, well balanced with strong head, good reach of neck, shoulder & upper arm, correct body bone & feet, good coat, moved well in profile;

2 Hooley’s Hoolmark Sundance Kid, super for type & size, lovely head ears & eyes, good through neck, front assembly, coat & pelt, correct topline & quarters. Unfortunately let himself down on the move;

3 Brown & Grange’s Afinlea Ratzer Ringlet.

JD (3)

1 Bigland’s Heythrop Tailwind, alone but deserved his place, really nice type with good masculine head, correct ears, strong long neck, correct front & good to span, good pelt & coat, correct topline & tailset, moved well. PGD (4) 1 Broadberry’s Ratscallion Tactical Move, good for size & overall balance, nice head, eyes & ears, good neck, shoulder & upper arm, body, bone & feet, correct economic movement;

2 Newport & Baker’s Ratscallion Tactical Play, quality terrier close to 1, but unfortunately not wearing his best coat.

LD (9)

1 Vaughan’s Parruss Comanche Chief, great for size & to span, my type of dark tri, wedge shaped head with super eyes & good earset. Just the right amount of clean muscular neck which fits perfectly into correct lay of shoulder. With the right return of upper arm, good bone, feet, topline & to span, super double coat & correct pelt, good quarters with just the right amount of angulation, super strong straight tail, moved well. CC, BOB & G4;

2 Smith & Moon’s Alncroft Blackthorn, handy size, stronger in head than 1, neat well earset. A little overdone in neck. Good to span & coat, good profile movement;

3 Highfield’s Bradpole Beau of Guestwick.

OD (4)

1 Hooley’s Ch Hoolmark Johnny Ring, quality dog with dark tri head, good eye & earset, correct reach of neck & front assembly, easy to span & good topline, strong quarters which he used to his advantage on the move. Unfortunately not in his best coat but still could not be denied the RCC;

2 Swift & Parr’s Spellbert Captain Jack, similar in type to 1 & close up. Just not quite as good to span;

3 Sollis’s Ch Mister Bonamonty.

PB (9)

1 Coogan’s Pacolito Phorbidden, lovely for size & type, feminine head with good eyes, correct neck & front assembly, good body, bone & feet, correct coat, pelt & good to span as a puppy should be, just the right amount of angulation in quarters, moved well for her age. BP;

2 Smith & Moon’s Alncroft In Gold, good for size, long neck, good lay of shoulder, bone & feet, harsh coat & good to span, moved well in profile;

3 Newport’s Digaden Playing Truent.

JB (2)

1 Steel’s Kingpar Callista, good for size & to span, correct wedge shaped head with correct eye set, good neck which flowed nicely into correct lay of shoulder, good return of upper arm, nice overall balance & strong well developed quarters, moved well for her age;

2 Minett’s Princess Lilo, very smart bitch just built on slightly larger lines than 1 and not as good to span, pleasing head with good eyes & earset, correct neck & front assembly, good broken coat, strong well muscled quarters, despite only two in the class deserved her place.

PGB (9)

1 Liddell’s Jane’s Lass, well balanced & of correct size, pleasing head with correct eyes & earset, good neck & lay of shoulder, correct topline & tailset, good coat, good profile movement;

2 Evans’ Aurgwen Meryl, nice bitch who needs more ring training to realise her potential, good head & eyes, correct, neck & front assembly, just the right amount of bone, good coat, a little overweight;

3 Smith’s Bethane Liberton Lassie.

LB (5)

1 Baker’s Pacolito Persistant, well balance bitch with good head, eyes & ears, correct neck & front assembly, good for bone, feet & body, strong quarters with well muscled thighs, moved well;

Correct muscular neck set nicely into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm, correct depth of body & to span, harsh coat & good pelt, correct bone & strong well developed quarters, moved well. CC, her third;

2 Baker’s Pacolito Numero Uno, it was a very close decision between these two bitches & I feel that they could change places another day. Good broader type wedge shape w/t head with the correct ears & eyes, good strong neck which flowed well into correct front assembly, good for body, bone, topline & tailset, good quarters with correct angles, moved well. RCC;

3 Sutton’s Ch Pacolito Maid A Phortune at Springbeck.
