SOFT COATED WHEATEN JUDGE BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 19

I would like to thank all exhibitors for the lovely entry and the show committee for their invitation to judge. I really enjoyed my day and I was impressed by the quality and standard of the dogs that were presented to me.
I perhaps shouldn't comment on length of neck these days as they are much improved from the “stuffy” days but I still feel it is something to watch....in both directions. Also, movement. Correctly constructed dogs should, by default, have good movement. However, that movement needs to be at the correct speed for the dog and the handler needs to adjust their pace accordingly. The lead does not have to “hang” loose, neither does the dog need to be “strung up”....The lead can be can be taut and still allow the dog it's head to move out at the pace it requires. I felt that some dogs were constrained in movement by their handlers lack of pace and/or too tight a lead. Every handler has, potentially, the best dog on the end of the lead...it's up to you to show it to it's advantage.

1.  Wright's Abbeymead Stelline; Stood four square giving good outline with well set tail. Nice masculine head. Good pigment and eye. Lovely coat coming. Moved out well. Up for size for me but deserved his placing.

YD (3,1abs) – Close decision between these two.

1. Taylor’s Eblanahalls Silkbeard at Raisingsands;  Good size. Lovely coat of good colour. Nice head and eye. Tail well set and nice rear angulation. Moved out well but needs to “settle in” more.

2. McNeillis' Celtania Atlantic Star;  Nice outline. Lovely head, expression, eye and pigment. Good tail set and rear angulation. Moved well fore and aft. Adolescent coat needs to settle.

PGD (3, 1abs)

1. Wardle's Denzilly He's Got The Look; Well, he has, for me anyway! Right size for me. Stood four square with well set tail up. Lovely masculine head with good eye and pigment.  Nice neck and lay of shoulder. Coat of right colour with wave. Good rear angulation. Moved out with free flowing relaxed ease. CC.

2.  Taylor's Eblanahalls Teckle Ish at Raisingsands;  Another nice sized dog. Irish type with coat. Masculine head with nice eye and pigment. Movement not as accurate as 1.

1. Watkin's Zaraslake Lucky Seven; Lovely size. Nice head, ear set, eye and pigment. Stands four square with good tail set. Good angulation. Lovely coat with good colour. Moved out well. Shown to advantage.

2.  Satherley's Silkcroft Freeze Frame;  Larger than 1. Nice head and eye. Level topline with tail well set on. Good coat with colour coming. Moves out well but wasn't quite as positive as 1.

3.  Lui's Eblanahalls Aye Right

2.  Moles, Williams, Dalton's Ch Celtannia Atlantic Gold; Close up to 1. Difficult choice made on maturity and coat. Masculine head and eye. Stands four square with level topline and well set on tail. Presented very well and nicely handled on the move. Lots to like and a worthy champion.

1.   Brook's Loofahsa Hugger Mugger;  Good for size at 11months. Nice head and eye. Lovely black nose and good dentition. Coat is nice colour and texture for age. Nice rear angulation. Presented well and moved out freely with a good stride and attitude.  Liked her a lot. BP.

JB (4, 2abs)

1.  Springford's Keevasdream White Linen;  Up to size for me. Pretty head and nice eye. Good pigment and dentition. Presents nice outline, standing four square with level topline and well set tail. Coat pale, in transition. Nice texture, colour will come. Longer in back than 2. Moved and presented well.

2.  Sheehan's Keevasdream White Lace; Litter sister to 1 and not much to separate them. Many of the above comments apply. She appears somewhat shyer than 1 and her movement wasn't quite as positive today. Shorter in back than 1. They will no doubt change places many times.

YB (8, 4abs)

1.  Francis' Sawheaten Kiss From A Rose;  Lovely size. Good head and eye with well set small ears. Presents a balanced outline, four square with level topline and tail set on. Good rear angulation. Moves out well and is handled to advantage. Coat maturing nicely and should keep it's colour.

2.  Springford's Keevasdream White Linen;  as above.
