SOFT COATED WHEATEN JUDGE CRUFTS 13

CRUFTS 2013 SOFT COATED WHEATEN TERRIERS
JUDGE: ANGELA SWITZER

My thanks to the Crufts’ Committee for their invitation to judge the Wheatens, having owned the breed since 1985 I consider it such an honour. I hope everyone enjoyed their day as much as I did. Thank you to all the exhibitors, some of whom came from abroad, it was great to be able to go over the dogs. Over all I was pleased with the quality and type but disappointed about discovering too many exhibits with black eye colour. The standard calls for HAZEL eye colour NOT BLACK, it hardens the expression of Wheatens. Where other exceptional attributes overcame the eye colour the dog was placed but it must be considered a fault and treated as such. On the plus side mouths were better than of late, the breeders must be congratulated on this. Movement was also better, most exhibits moved properly (even though a carpet in an exhibition hall is not their natural terrain!). Lots of lovely long reaching dogs.

Many of my remarks are shared by all the placings, and sometimes I wished I had more cards to award, such was the quality of the exhibits.

VETERAN DOG (4.0)

1. Mrs. S. & Mr. N. Barrett’s CH. LOOFAHSA TEENAGE DIRTBAG

8 yrs old and still looking so well. Not exaggerated in any way. Stood foursquare. Lovely head, big black nose, neat ears, mouth ok for age. Good reach of neck. Level top line which he held very well both standing and on the move. Good to see him so fit, I remember giving him his 1st CC and he is a worthy Champion.

2. Mrs. A. & Mr. R. Naylor’s CH. PETENEIRA P’TICULARLY PETE WITH AMARICY

1 day short of his 8th birthday! Longer cast than 1st place but a lot of the above comments apply. Good coat texture and colour. Moved out well.

3. Mrs. P. Subertova’s GRAND CH. CZ. SK. ARMANDO MARIO DELLA QUATTROCENTO

Another 8 yrs old proving Wheatens hold their age well. Good in head, lovely mouth. Good shape. Coat of a lighter colour but good texture. Movement fore and aft lost him a higher placing.

SPECIAL PUPPY DOG (5.0)

1. Drs. M. & E. Griffiths’ MANAWYDDAN I GOT RHYTHMN

9 months old carrying an ‘Irish type’ coat. Good expressive head, nice eye, good pigmentation. Straight front, good angulation. Level top line. Bit loose on the move at
present. Very promising.

2. Mr. T & Mrs. M. Adams’ SAFFINI CRAZY FOR YOU

10 months old. Larger type. Sired by winner of Veteran Dog in head with strong muzzle. Enough bone, deep chest. Lovely texture and colour to coat. Needs more ring craft, gave handler a hard time!

3. Mrs. J. Thackray’s ABIQUA WILD ON AN ACETRIP

9 months old smaller in stature but good bone. Not as strong in muzzle as higher placings. Good head with neat ears. Lovely coat colour & texture. Moved and handled well.

SPECIAL JUNIOR DOG (4.0)

1. Mr. N. & Mrs. M. Boast’s DENZILLY TICKLE ME ELMO

14 months old. Good in head. Correct colour eye, pigmentation and bite. Carrying a good coat of correct texture and colour. Straight front. Well made which was apparent when he moved properly, it took him a while to settle. Preferred his top line to 2nd.

2. Mrs. E. Ross’ MODNY STYLE NON STOP (IMP. RUS.)

16 months old. Smaller than number 1. Masculine head, good strong muzzle. Lovely neck flowing into good shoulders. Straight front. Deep chest. Lower tail set. Moved and handled well.

3. Drs. M. & E. Griffiths’ MANAWYDDAN I GOT RHYTHMN

First in Spec. Puppy Dog

YEARLING DOG (2.0)

1. Ms. A. Omitogun & Ms. L. Matti’s FRONTLINE MR. FEELGOOD

17 months old. Super looking youngster. Great size, lovely square outline. Correct mouth. Good in head, masculine without any coarseness. Pigmentation as it should be. Best of mouths. Straight front, level top line. Well angulated. Coat just starting to change to adult. Moved and handled well. Should have a promising future.

2. Mr. D. & Mrs. J. Quarrie’s QUAYWEST CLOSER TO THE EDGE

14 months old. Gave away a lot in age. Longer cast. Lost out in top line. Standing his front was straight but on the move he tended too throw his elbows out. Very happy chappie!

POST GRADUATE DOG (5.0)

1. Mrs. K.J. Purser’s SAFFINI TEENAGE DREAMS RCC

Really super masculine dog, no exaggerations. Lovely shape. Super texture, waves and colour to his coat. Good head, correct cheek boned, he has a big black nose, good mouth, correct eye. neck flowing into great shoulders, really good straight front. Level top line held standing and on the move. Well deserved RCC.

2. Mrs. L.M. Mapson’s ZARASLAKE SIROCCO

Smaller dog but all in proportion. Lovely to go over, in profile he looks as if his front is not straight but when you get your hands on him it certainly is, think when he gets more furnishings on his legs he will look more balanced. Nice head lovely mouth and dark pigmentation. Moved and handled well.

3. Mrs. K.J. & Mr. P.A. Williams’ SNOWMEADOW PEREGRINE PIPER

Longer cast. Good texture to coat and at 17 months old has time to mature and improve in colour. Bit unsure on the move at first but when settled moved well.

LIMIT DOG (9.0)

This was a really lovely class, one of those I wish I had more cards to award,
Spoilt for choice!

1. J.C. & P.C. Maleary’s SAFFINI TEENAGE SENSATION

Pushed his litter brother hard for RCC. All of the comments I made about his brother apply, on the day he did not look quite so mature but no doubt these two will change places many times.

2. Mr. W. & Mrs. A. Francis’ AMARICY BUFFALO SOLIDER

Lovely head, big black nose good mouth. Good head, strong muzzle. Level top line. Deep chest, good angulation. Good texture to coat, coming on well. Correct on the move, handled well.

3. Mrs. D. & Mr. W. Pascoe’s MIDDLEBURY SHOOTING STAR

Another good dog, coming on well. Nice head, eye, mouth, pigmentation. Moved with purpose. Very close to 2nd place, again moved and handled well. Am sure
he will be challenging for the highest honours.

OPEN DOG (15.2ab)

1. Mrs. M. & Mrs. B. Moeller-Sieber & McDonald’s INT/GER/LUX/AM/AMG CH GREENTREE STORM CATCHER CC. BOB

Breathtaking dog, a real showman and no exaggeration at all. Lovely head, flat with good stop, SMALL ears (so few in the breed these days.). Great pigmentation, lovely mouth, correct eye. Really well muscled, deep chest, lovely angulation. Tail set spot on. Super construction which enabled him to move really well with a free flowing stride.

2. Mr. C. Van Merrienboer’s INT/LUX/BEL/DUTCH CH DOGSIDE’S
EL ARNOLD

Slightly larger dog, well made. Lovely head, good reach of neck, correct shoulders. Straight front, deep chest. Held level top line well standing and on the move. Coat of good colour and texture. Moved well in class but lost out on the challenge for RCC as seemed to be unsettled.

3. Dr. V. Hemel’s DE/PL/SK/HU/AT/INT CH RICCO VON DER FLURAU

Well proportioned, correct in body. Pleasing head, dark pigmentation. Good top line, tail set and angulation. Close to the first two placings but would have liked to have seen him move more freely.

GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME DOG (0.0)

No entries.

VETERAN BITCH (8.1Ab)

1. Mrs. B. Hanna’s CH KINAELAN CUCHYLAENE

At 9 yrs old she can still move so well, really free. Good in body, lovely for size, great top line and still in lovely coat great texture and colour. She really looked as if she was enjoying her day out.

2. Mr. J. Allen’s CH EMALOT DIVA QUEEN OF SWANDARE

Great girl of 13 yrs. A real ‘golden oldie’. Well able to hold her own against the youngsters! One of the best muscled here today. Lovely body, has a top line that belies her age.

3. Drs. M.L.L. & E.A. Griffiths’ WINTRYPARK MISS GOODNIGHT WITH MANAWYDDAN

7 yr. old, so a ‘younger veteran’. Neat, pretty girl. Great pigmentation, neat ears. Well muscled, lovely free mover.

SPECIAL PUPPY BITCH (8.0)

1. Mrs. C.J. & Mr. I.V. Wardle’s SAFFINI ONE AND ONLY

Loved this little lady, actually considered her for the RCC but really she was too young. Will follow her career with interest. Feminine head, good reach of neck, very well constructed. Lovely shape, great body, good texture and colour to coat. Everything a Wheaten pup should be. Out-moved the rest of the class. Pleased to award her Best Puppy.

2. Mr. T. & Mrs. S. Jensen’s NORTHRIDGE GO RUMBA

Well up to 1st just not as steady on the move. Pretty youngster carrying a lovely coat slightly longer cast. Great reach of neck, plenty of bone. Should have a bright future.

3. Ms. T.J. & Mr. S. Hammond & Evans’ CALVANCE WIG WAM BAM

Another good youngster, very promising. Nice shape, lovely for size. Compact body, enough neck. Deep chest, level top line. Lighter in colour but again correct texture. Loved her character. Needs to settle on the move.

SPECIAL JUNIOR BITCH (8.2Ab.)

1. Mrs. A. & Mr. R. Naylor’s AMARICY I WON’T BACK DOWN

Very pretty young lady the most confident in this class. Well made, square, nice for size. Straight front, level top line, good angulation. Moved and handled well.

2. Mr. I.F. & Mrs. S. Davies’ DENZILLY I’M SO DIZZY

Beautifully made but not the confidence of 1st. Feminine all through. Good body, straight front, well laid back shoulders, level top line and carried tail well on the moved when settled. Again very promising.

3. P. Smith’s AMARICY SHES MY BABY

Litter sister of 1st. Not as mature as her litter mate but of the same stamp. Small neat ears. Good pigmentation and eye colour. Level top line, carried tail well when settled. Can look ‘bum high’ when standing but when positioned right she is not. Perhaps some more ring craft would help her and her handler.

YEARLING BITCH (10.1Ab.)

1. Ms. J.L. & Mr. G. Dowdy’s DENZILLY SWEET REBEL

Really square little girl. Against some bitches she may look small but she is correct in the standard. Super mouth and has one of the biggest black noses seen today. Feminine all through, so much to like, well set ears carried on a pretty head. Neat workmanlike, enough body, well muscled, plenty of bone, good angulation. Super coat of correct colour and texture. One of the few shown on a loose lead, so nice to see and so natural, I do prefer this. Happy girl, enjoying her day.

2. Mrs. A.D. McIntyre’s CALVANCE COOLEY THISTLE

Litter sister to 3rd placed girl. Both of very good type. Good head, used ears well. Decent neck, correct in shoulders. Straight front Level top line. Good spring of ribs for one so young. Coat coming of nicely. Moved well.

3. Ms. T.J. & Mr. S. Hammond & Evans CALVANCE CONNEMARA

The above observations apply to this sister as well but she was out-moved by her litter mate. Sure they will change places many times.

POST GRADUATE BITCH (12. 2Ab.)

1. Mr. S. & Mrs. H. & Miss A. O’Sullivan & Harding’s CHEKHINA
STREAMING SORAKA

This girl showed all the others in this class how to move. Really attentive to her handler. In lovely condition, well presented and handled. Nice head, good pigmentation, expressive ears, lovely reach of neck. Good top line, held well standing and on the move. Correct in body. Happy girl.

2. Ms. T.J. & Mr. E. Hammond & Evans’ CALVANCE ROOGAGH

Another good one from this kennel. Lovely girl, pretty, one of the few with a big black nose (do wish there were more to be seen). Nice expressive ears. Correct shape and size. Coat a little light at the moment but should mature well. Not the movement as first.

3. Mrs. J. & Mr. P. McFerran’s KIRKTONHILL LOOK NO FURTHER

Lots to like about her. Not as confident as those above and again she lost out on movement, was close behind at times (as were many). Coat has a slight grey cast at present but texture was very good. Strong muzzle, good pigmentation and nice eye. Straight front, short-coupled and well built. Correct angulation.

LIMIT BITCH (13.0) A lot of lovely exhibits in this class, but again movement let a lots down.

1. Mrs. C.J. & Mr. I.V. Wardle’s SAFFINI YOURS TRULY

She is really coming into her own, liked her when younger and she is maturing well. Lovely all round, correct type, construction and movement, neat and no exaggeration. Good in head, strong muzzle, correct eye, pigment and mouth. Good neck and shoulders, Deep chest. Covered in good coat with colour coming on nicely. A credit to her breeder.

2. Mrs. P. & Mr. J. Clarke’s CALVANCE FAT BOTTOM GIRL FOR FLAXELA JW

Yet another good one from a strong kennel. Not quite as mature as first place but catching up, will be interesting to see how she matures, one to watch for the future. Pretty head, small ears! Neck looked slightly shorter than first but is correct for size and build. Lovely top line and very good tail set. Correct strength of bone. Moved and shown well.

3. Miss S. & Mrs. C. Watkins’ CHLOEANCO HUNNI CARESS FOR ZARASLAKE

Another lovely bitch fought hard for a higher place. She was shown free standing (just how we all used to show!!). Compact and well made. Moved and handled very well, really at one with her handler. Another one to watch for the future.

OPEN BITCH (17.7Ab.) Lovely class, many fine exhibits but again movement let some of them down.

1. Mrs. M. & Mrs. B. Moeller-Sieber & McDonalds’ INT/GER/LUX CH WHEATEN REBEL’S MAGIC MOMENT CC

A real pleasure to go over, she is a pretty, feminine bitch. Lovely for size and Wheaten type, not exaggerated in any way. Correctly made which of course meant she moved so well. Good head, strong muzzle, flat skull of correct proportions, well set ears, black pigmentation. Good length of neck flowing to good body with level top line. Well set-on tail. Deep chest, good spring of rib. Enough coat, lovely texture and colour. Expertly presented and handled. Pushed hard for BOB.

2. Ms. T. J. & Mr. S. Hammond & Evans’ CALVANCE TOPPA TOTTY (AI)
RCC

Again lovely for size, feminine girl. Correct head with small ears. Good neck, correct shoulders, good body, compact, straight front and level top line. Coat texture not at its best. Moved well, happy little girl.

3. Ms. J.L. & Mr. G.J. Dowdy’s CH DENZILLY TOOT SWEET SHCH

Size larger but all in proportion. Correct head, good stop, strong muzzle, good mouth, nice eye and big black nose. Strong correct body, straight front and level top line, spot on tail set. Plenty of bone but still so feminine. Lovely coat of correct colour and texture, flowed nicely when she moved. Happy and outgoing. Handled very well.

GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME BITCH (2.1Ab.)

1. Mrs. R.H. & Miss O.F. Busby’s CALVANCE KILLER QUEEN AT ZAKBY

Pretty little bitch. Slightly short in neck. Good depth of chest. Plenty of bone. Only 1 year old so has time to mature. Carried tail gaily today. Moved ok.
