SOFT COATEDWHEATEN JUDGE LEEDS 19

I wish to thank the Show committee for their invitation to judge, this being the first time Challenge Certificates were on offer at this show.
My thanks also to the committee of the SCWTC of GB, exhibitors and many friends for the surprise celebration after the judging as 2019 is my 50th year of owning SCWTs They presented me with a lovely framed photo winning Best Veteran in Breed with my dog Bingley at Bath this year. It was a great entry bearing in mind the extreme heat.
As I am retiring from judging at CC level I will make a few comments in general which I hope will be constructive and helpful. Handling and presentation has improved over the years, and we have made great strides. The Wheaten is no longer the poor relation in the Terrier Group but please remember the Standard requires the Wheaten to be a natural terrier. Not exaggerated in any way and not over stylised. In fact a coat of correct texture does not lend itself to being so. They should flow in loose waves or curls and not stand off.
I found several heads were not typical of the breed lacking the ‘stop’ or step where skull and muzzle meet. Too many had a gentle curve from skull to nose. The skull should be flat between the ears, not dome shape.
Some have the lovely long reach and drive movement required (often described as daisy cutting action) However front movement was poor mainly due, I believe, to narrow chests and poor shoulders.
Over angulation in the rear results in the back legs being too long to reach forward under the body. They rotate as if riding a bicycle, rather than driving out as required.
Please handlers, do not run around the ring at top speed, it may look flashy but does not help your dog’s movement, the faster they go, the back legs converge towards single tracking. Adjust your speed to the natural speed of the dog.
The grass was very thick and lumpy which made it difficult to assess movement at times, I did try to allow for this.
Size is still increasing and must be watched.
