 SOFT COATED WHEATEN TERRIERS

Many thanks to the Paignton committee for the invitation to judge at what I always regard as my local show.  I was looking for a well-constructed Wheaten with a coat that fits the standard whether “Heavy” or “Irish.” and I was delighted with the overall quality of the dogs present. The hall was very noisy which worried some of the exhibits.  There were two areas of concern; one, as well as the usual middle lower incisors being out of line in some exhibits, there were one or two verging on being undershot. The other concern was the over stylising of some exhibits in the American style which is incorrect for the UK Standard.  The coat should flow and fall naturally and have some shine which it cannot do when fluff dried and then cut to shape.

JUNIOR DOG (1)

1. Hanna’s Kinaelan Kilmore.  Nice young boy with a balanced head, correct bite, eye and earset giving a typical expression. Good neck into well laid shoulder and level topline with well angulated quarters.  Moved soundly but a little loose at present but time is on his side.

PG DOG (2)

1.  McNeillis’s Celtannia Atlantic Star.  Good head with correct eye and ear carriage. Strong neck into well laid shoulder and deep chest. Level topline and short coupled. Coat still to develop wave but texture OK.  Moved soundly.

2. Taylor’s Eblanahalls Teckle Ish at Raisingsands.  Nicely balanced head with typical expression.  Neck, shoulder and topline good with deep chest.  Beautiful Irish coat but badly let down by his movement on the day which was very erratic.

LD  (2)

1. Hammond & Evans Calvenace Thor.  Balanced head, masculine but not coarse and a keen terrier expression.  Strong neck into well laid shoulders and level topline with good tailset. Well ribbed back and short coupled.  Well angulated front and rear giving reach and drive on the move.  Lovely coat.  Pushed hard in the challenge.

2. Taylors Eblanahalls Silkbeard at Raisngsands.  A close decision.  Very similar to the first in make and shape and many of the same comments apply.  Another with a lovely coat. I just preferred the slightly shorter coupling of the winner.

OD (8)

1. Blandford’s Janeyjimjams Joshua.  This boy fits the standard so well.  Unexaggerated and moderate and the correct size.  Very good head and expression with a strong neck into well laid shoulders.  Topline is level and tailset is good with plenty behind it.  Well ribbed back and short coupled with a deep chest.  Correct angles front and rear giving free accurate movement and all topped off with an excellent coat with the desired colour, wave and fall. I was pleased to give him his 4th CC

2.  Janeyjimjams Jubilee Juke.  Younger half-brother of the winner and still has some maturing to do but his overall quality earned him his place. Masculine head with good bite, eye and earset giving a terrier expression, strong neck and level topline but a little longer cast than the winner. Well angulated and moving with precision coming and going.  Lovely Irish coat with wave and shine. RCC

VD (1)

1. Gleeson’s Oglyssanes Durango Dust  Well made throughout. Good head with strong jaw, correct eye colour and neat ears.  Neck, shoulder, topline and tailset all good as is angulation front and rear.  He moves with energy and precision. Coat  of shine which flows and falls as he moves.

SBB (1)

1. Gleeson’s Glendowan Golden Brandy.  Very attractive and feminine 2 year old bitch.  Balanced head with good bite, correct eye colour and well set ears.  Well muscled neck into well laid and level topline maintained on the move.  Deep chest and well ribbed back to short coupling.  Good coat developing well and moved very soundly.BSB.

PB (2)

2 Lovely pups and a very close decision.

1.  Howe’s Daisymaes Tumbling Dice.  Not quite as mature as the second but nevertheless a super pup.  Feminine head and expression with good bite and well set and carried ears.  Correct angles at shoulder and quarters, short coupled with a level topline and well set and carried tail presenting a typical outline.  Good bone and substance and moved with exceptional reach and drive for a pup. Coat correct for her age.

2. Satherley and Witheyman’s Silkcroft Born This Way. Close up to 1st in nearly all respects.  Quality head and expression.  Very good neck shoulder and topline with plenty behind the tail.  Well angulated front and rear producing fluent movement around the ring. An impressive outline and silky puppy coat.  I just preferred the slightly shorter coupling and correct tail carriage of the winner.

PGB (4,1)

1. Francis’s Sawheaten Kiss From a Rose.  Attractive bitch with a balanced head.  Good bite ,eye and pigment and well set ears.  Well made through neck shoulder, topline and tailset and well angulated front and back giving free movement from all angles. Coat has a nice texture but wave still to develop wave but at just 18 months old time is on her side.

2. Satherley's Silkcroft Point and Shoot Neat feminine bitch with a good head and typical outlook.  Shoulder placement good and topline level with correct tailset.  She moved with purpose around the ring Another with a coat still to develop a consistent colour.  I just preferred the body proportions of the winner.

LB  (6,2)

1.  Lui’s Eblanahalls Honeytrap JW  Neat, feminine girl with a balanced head, correct bite and well set ears giving a typical expression.  Good shoulder, level topline and well angulated quarters.  Movement correct from all angles.  Coat still to develop wave, typical of her age and coat type.

2. Grant’s Dannebriel Gladly Godetia ShCM   Slightly taller but still feminine.  Neat balanced head with typical expression.  Good neck into correct shoulder placement leading to level topline and good tailset  with correct carriage. Colour not quite cleared.  Moved very well to claim her place in a difficult class.

 3.  Janeyjimjams Jam Puff at Brynhir.

OB (11,3)

1. Multi Ch Celtannia Extra Confident at Kinaelan CJW16, IrJCh, WW18.   I have admired this bitch since I first saw her as a six month old pup in Ireland and I was not disappointed with the adult version.  A balanced, feminine head with a real terrier outlook.  Bite, eye and earset all correct.  Well made neck into excellent shoulder and topline with a correct tailset and carriage.  A deep chest well ribbed back and short coupled.  Correct angulation front and back leading to flowing movement.  Lovely coat with the required wave and flow and fall. Pleased to award her 3rd CC. and BOB

2. Hughlock’s Janeyjimjams Jolene at Keevasdream.  Another bitch I have long admired, litter sister to the dog CC winner and like a feminine version of him.  Balanced, typical head,  well laid shoulder into level topline.  Well ribbed back and short coupled.  Angles good at bot end giving sound, precise movement.  Lovely coat with wave and fall.  RCC.

VB  (3,1)

1. Charleton’s  Janeyjimjams Jemima . Very good head, eye and ear giving typical expression.  Neck, shoulder, topline and tailset all correct.  Well angulated quarters and front producing fluent movement.  Lovely coat for wave and colour.  A little longer cast than 2nd but better angles won the day.

2. Jefferies’s Frontline Simply Beautiful.  Good head, ears and expression.  Good neck but would prefer more layback of shoulder. Topline level and good tailset.  Moved rather close behind.  Beautiful coat with shine, wave and fall flowing with her movement.

BV  From the Open class.

1. Munn’s  Snowmeadow Peggy Phurrari.  Beautiful balanced head with typical Wheaten expression.  Strong neck into well laid shoulder and level topline with good tailset. Plenty of bone and substance. Correct angulation producing flowing movement.  Coat plentiful and wavy.
