SOFT COATED WHEATEN JUDGE RICHMOND 13

This was my first time giving CC s in Soft-Coated Wheaten terriers, a breed which I have kept, shown and bred for the last 24 years. It was a long time coming (!) and I would like to thank all exhibitors for their entry. I enjoyed the day. I hope you did too, despite the wind and rain!
My preference is for a correctly sized Wheaten, 18 19.5 inches in height, well-boned, standing four square, well balanced with a lovely natural Wheaten coloured coat, big black nose, dark eye (with a twinkle!), and a happy waggy tail!
In general, I believe, there have been many improvements in the breed over the last few years which breeders should be proud of. Some beautiful puppies from several breeders.
In the main length of neck is better, shoulders are improved and rear angulation is good. Movement is therefore also much improved. Coats are also more uniform and with the correct care and preparation most will present nicely for the show ring. There were a couple of minor negatives: Ears are sometimes a bit bigger than I would like/remember and some dogs are still up for size .
Also, the mouth. The standard says Lips tight and black, jaws strong with a perfect regular and complete scissor bite . I m afraid this still needs to be addressed as I found several level bites. Although dropped and uneven teeth are also incorrect, I well know that some leeway needs to be given here still, especially with an older bitch that has been bred from.

Veteran Dog: No entries

Puppy Dog:(2) 1.Howe s Daisymaes Enforcer: Lovely coat with good colour. Darker muzzle which should clear. Nice head, neat ears and good eye colour. Good tail-set. Needs to settle on the move. BP

2.Mapson s Abiqua Wild Jack Of Hearts: Nice colour to coat but coat not as mature as 1. Lovely head, good pigment and correct bite. Very nicely presented and handled. Was unsettled on the move. Difficult choice!

Junior Dog:(4)

1.Thackray s Abiqua Wild On An Ace Trip: Another difficult decision! Lovely short coupled dog with coat maturing nicely. Nice head and ears. Good bite and pigment. Well boned. Tail set on but a bit over for my liking.

2.Bradford s Abiqua Wild Casinoroyal: Beautifully shown and presented. Same comments apply as 1 and I m sure they will change places many times! Drives out well but preferred steadier movement of 1.
