South Wales 13 Judge

SOFT COATED WHEATEN SOUTH WALES 13 Judge(s): MRS JO DOWDY Thank you to the SWKA committee for their kind invitation to judge at this well run show and also to my very pleasant and efficient stewards Shirley and Raymond. I would like to commence my critique by making some general comments regarding the exhibits I had entered for assessment today. I was disappointed to note that prominent breastbones are now appearing in the breed. The Wheaten Terrier breed standard does not ask for “a clearly visible breastbone” like for example the Schnauzer breed standard. In my opinion these prominent breastbones are incorrect and spoil the outline of the Wheaten Terrier. I did wonder if, in some exhibits, the “appearance” of a protruding breastbone was being caused by exaggerated trimming but I now know this is not the case and hope that the frequency of the “visible breastbone” will diminish and not increase in number as the breed moves forward in time. Another issue I noted is that a few exhibits had missing premolar’s, this problem should also be kept an eye on, this said I was pleased to find many correct scissor bites & delighted to find strong, large teeth in many of the younger male exhibit’s. With regard to movement in general I felt that front movement today was an improvement on the last time I judged in 2011 however rear movement still remains problematic with many still moving far too close behind. I thought temperaments to be superb, just as they should be happy & friendly dogs. I also thought that coats are generally in a good place at the moment, plenty of colour & desired loose curls or waves on show, with paler coats mostly belonging to the juvenile exhibits as one would expect. Finally I would like to thank the exhibitors for accepting my decisions in such a sporting manner & I hope that you enjoyed your day as much as I did. 1. Howes’ Daisymaes Enforcer. Very masculine puppy who presents a lovely outline. Excellent bite with strong muzzle. Good length of neck, strong level topline. Good depth of chest, short coupled in body & well angulated hind quarters. Lovely soft coat of correct colour. Moved out well. Should have a bright future BP 2. Calvert & Kelly’s Amaricy Bullet Proof. Only 6 months so giving away a lot on maturity to 1 but much to like. Correct head proportions and another with excellent dentition. Well bodied for age with plenty of bone. Correct rear angulation which he used to advantage on the move. 3. Walklin’s Kellynack The Pied Piper. JD (2) Very close decision both having positive attributes 1. Thoburn’s Northridge Gotan Go. Correct ear set, dark hazel eye & good head properties. Adequate length of neck leading to good shoulders. Well off for body and well angulated rear. Coat on the pale side as I would expect for his age. Steady mover. 2. Griffiths’ Manawyddan I Got Rhythm. A very promising youngster who presents a picture of overall balance. Soft Irish coat of wheaten colour which is maturing nicely. Moved out very well, I would just prefer more substance to body to complete the picture, but this said he has time on his side. PGD (1) 1. Johnstone’s Whitevale Motorway Madness. The first thing that struck me about this boy was his beautiful coat with correct colour and waves for his age. Correct for size. Very masculine head with correct scissor bite. Nice ear set. I would prefer a little more length to neck. Good shoulder placement, depth of chest & short coupled. Steady mover. LD (6) 1. Omitogun & Matti’s Frontline Mr Feelgood. Smaller dog than some here today but fits the standard. All in proportion and presents a neat outline. Correct head proportions, good dentition and pigmentation. Ears well set & used to advantage. Level topline, deep chest, short coupled & well angulated rear. Coat of the correct colour and texture. Just needs time to fully mature in body. 2. Howes’ Daisymaes Desmond Decker. Another I liked very much. Excellent bite & dark eye. Good reach of neck & well laid shoulders. Deep chest with correct spring of rib. Well-muscled. Soft coat but still needs to mature in colour to complete the picture 3. Francis’ Amaricy Buffalo Soldier. OD (7:1a) Very Close decision 1. Fallon’s Ch Janey Jimjams Jenson JW ShCM I last judged this boy as a youngster two years ago and awarded him his class, I now feel that he is at his prime having matured into a worthy champion. Masculine head, dark eye and correct bite. Super length of neck leading to well-placed shoulders. Well sprung ribs, level topline with well angulated rear. On the move he displays both reach & drive. His coat has it all soft & silky, true wheaten in colour & those beautiful waves. Pleased to award him the CC 2. Carter’s Ch Chloeanco Hunni Dream ShCM. Loved his type & overall balance. Has the most superb head properties & dentition. Correct ear set, dark hazel eye & good pigmentation. Ribs well sprung, deep chest & correct tailset & carriage, moved out well RCC 3. Pascoe’s Middlebury Shooting Star. PB (4) Four lovely pups at different stages of development 1. Herbert’s Calvenace She’s The One. For me as a puppy should be so full of mischief! Correct size. Flat skull, dark hazel eye & well set ears. Lovely length of neck and correct shoulder placement. Level topline and good spring of rib. Correct tailset & carriage. Moved out well displaying reach & drive. Well-presented beautiful soft coat. 2. Hobson & Bradford’s Abiqua Wild Wrapped In Ivy. Close up to 1. Stands four square & shorter coupled than 1. Correct head proportions & dentition. Strong level topline & nicely angulated rear. Very pretty soft coat of a clear wheaten colour. Moved out well. 3. Hill’s Janey Jimjams Jive Queen. JB (7:1a) 1. Philips & Gullick’s Jaeva Orange Blossom. Loved this bitch for her type & alertness. Presents a balanced outline. Dark hazel eye & correct bite. Lovely length of neck leading into well placed shoulders. Level topline & well angulated rear. Well-presented soft coat, which typically for her age is waiting for colour to return to complete the picture. Moved with reach & drive in side profile, but rear action needs to strengthen a little. 2. Wardle’s Saffini One & Only. Really liked this young lady although immature compared to 1. Correct bite & eye colour. Enough neck leading to well-placed shoulders, very strong level topline. Well-muscled with good rear angulation. Super soft coat of strong wheaten colour. 3. Steven’s Starcadia Olympic Diva. PGB (5) 1. Hammond & Evans Calvenace Connemara. Won this class with her steady movement having good angulation front & rear. Smaller bitch than some but balanced & well bodied. I liked her head proportions very much & she has correct dentition. Soft coat of a rich wheaten colour 2. Thoburn’s Daisymaes Doris Day With Northridge. Very feminine bitch, good ear set with correct bite. Decent length of neck, shoulders ok. Good depth of chest & short coupled. Coat soft but requires more colour. 3. Grant’s Kellynack La Boheme. LB (9) 1. Moles & Williams’ Kinaelan Cachique At Celtannia Presents a picture of overall balance. Head strong but still feminine, correct flat skull & well placed ears which she uses to advantage. One of the best mouths here today with clean, strong, large white teeth & correct scissor bite. Pigmentation is excellent all through, correct dark hazel eye, black tight lips, black nails & a large black nose. Lovely length of neck, well placed shoulders and firm level topline which she retains on the moved. Correct tailset & carriage. On the move she has the required reach and drive in side profile and moved true fore & aft. Beautiful soft coat, correct wheaten colour and desired wave. Pleased to award a first CC & in the challenge she was spot on & her controlled fluent movement won her BOB over the dog, Congratulations. 2. Griffiths’ Manawyddan Brigid; A size down on 1 & so much to like on this compact, short coupled bitch. Loved her head properties, well set ears, dark eye and correct dentition. Enough length of neck leading to level topline. Well bodied. Moves true fore & aft. 3. Clarkes Calvenace Fat Bottomed Girl For Flaxela JW ShCM OB (10:1a) 1. Williams’ Brynhir Rochelle Lil Rock. Up to size but presents a very balances outline. Like the LB winner her head is strong but still remains feminine. Correct dentition, eye colouring could be a shade darker for me but has good rim pigmentation & large black nose. Super topline & tailset. Good depth of chest & well sprung ribs. Very nice coat of good wheaten colour. I liked her very much and to me she excels on the move having both reach & drive she covers the ground effortlessly. RCC 2. Escott’s Ch Silkcroft Light Fantastic. Another really super bitch. Correct for size, lovely head properties & well set ears. Good length of neck leading to well-placed shoulders. Strong topline good tailset & carriage. Has a really pretty coat, soft, correct colour & desired waves. Moved out well enough but could not match 1 on the day. 3. Soft coat of correct wheaten colour, still capable of showing the youngsters how to move & she was clearly enjoying herself today, a credit to her owners. 2. Charleton’s Snowmeadow Janey Jimjams With Showadiwady. A size up on 1 & presents a balanced outline. Strong head & muzzle, good length of neck & well placed shoulders. Deep chest & well bodied. Lovely coat for colour & wave. Handled very well by her young handler. BREEDERS (1) 1. Barrett’s Nicely presented & all of a type. Strong heads, level toplines.
