SOFT COATED WHEATEN WELSH KENNEL CLUB 19 Judge: Mr W R Irving BEST OF BREED : 4558 DOWDY, Ms J I & DOWDY Mr G J Ch Greentree Gold Mombo To Denzilly (Imp) SOFT COATED WHEATEN JUDGE WELSH KC 19 The entry of 52 was pretty good and put the breed third in the Terrier Group as far as numbers were concerned. This is my last appointment judging the breed at CC level - my first having been in 1985. There have been considerable changes in the breed in that time and now, I think, presentation has settled somewhat as compared to in the past with a more middle of the road approach now prevalent. That is all for the best. Mouths too have improved but meantime I’m not sure that coats have, and rather too many appeared a shade woolly rather than silky. The most disappointing problem for the breed does still seem to me to be hind movement and far too many of the exhibits move too close behind. Is it because some of the dogs are over angulated behind? I know that the standard asks for well bent stifles, but equally it does also call for hocks to turn neither in nor out. This is not a fault that has always been in the breed and does, I think, need to be addressed by breeders and judges. Finally I have to say that I thought that the sportsmanship shown by exhibitors and spectators around the ring was first class and much appreciated. That is a good omen for the future if the breed. VD (1) 1. Thoburn’s Ch Northridge Gotan Go Sh.CM, Very pleasing in head with the correct skull. OK for strength of muzzle and has enough stop. Correct size of ears, just enough neck without being excessive there and not overdone behind. Moved reasonably well in front and was okay in tail carriage. Went on to be Best Veteran in Breed and I understand also won the Terrier Veteran Group competition later in the day. PGD (3) 1. Wright’s Abbeymead Stelline. Not a small dog, good flat skull better in coat texture than the others here. They could be silkier in coat. Tail carried a bit proudly but was correctly set on at the base. Moved better behind then the other two and was not overdone in hindquarters. Could be a bit more positive in front. 2. Holding’s Celtannia Atlantic Gigolo, rather well trimmed, more positive in front than the winner but not so good behind or in coat texture. Very pleasing in head with good eye and ears. Tail carried rather high. 3. McNeillis’ Celtannia Atlantic Star LD (3) 1. Thoburn’s Northridge Me and Tennessee, good in head and expression with correct flat skull and typical head proportions.
