SOFT COATED WHEATEN WINDSOR 25 Thank you to all exhibitors for my splendid entry of 43 dogs, to which I had been greatly looking forward and was far from disappointed! There was such an improvement in tail carriage with virtually all having beautiful silky coats and good mouths since I last judged the breed in 2021 and, thankfully, few over-stylised. The applause for placings and atmosphere of friendliness from around the ring and from the dogs themselves was as evident as ever. May it long continue. Being fourth in the ring, the heat had begun to rise to an uncomfortable level and we were thankful for the shade of the tent with many in the later classes resorting to putting their ears out like Dumbo to catch the slight breeze that there was making ear carriage tricky to judge fairly. Due to the good humour and efficiency of both our stewards Gemma Pike and Alex Hill we managed to finish in good time for the group and I am so grateful to them. However, somewhere around the younger bitches I had a nasty shock. Normally when judging you go over dogs with palms down but, being diabetic I have to eat at regular intervals, so when opening up a small biscuit in passing, turned over my hands. Both palms were covered in a deep bright chestnut from the tips of my fingers down to my wrist, a fact that was confirmed by both stewards and the nearby ringside, which could only have been a form of coat colouring or dye. This is quite unacceptable. It would have been sensible to check my hands between each entrant but had never imagined that any exhibitor in this breed could stoop to such a level. VD/B (6,2) 1. Satherley’s Ch & Am Ch Silkcroft Freeze Frame JW 7 years old and quite beautiful. So full of himself and his own importance in the best of coat and condition, so well balanced and strongly built with excellent tailset and carriage. Super for size, type, make and shape, this resulting in the best of movement covering ground in profile. Gather that he is half sister to the BCC winner and just able to cope with the weather conditions a little better. A thrill to see him shortlisted in the Group still holding himself with pride despite the heat under Frances-Chapman King CC & BOB 2. Dowdy’s Ch Greentree Gold Mombo to Denzilly (imp USA) 9 years young and another handsome fellow so typey and well made all through with good layback of shoulder and strong level topline, in the best of coat and condition. He too moved very well with non-stop happy wagging tail. 3. Williams’ Flaxela Living Legend of Gwendonydd PD (1) 1. Not only is he beautiful but has proved his usefulness as I see he sired the RBCC as well as two class winners. RCC to add to his 12 tickets 2. Herbert’s Saffini Smooth Operator at Julibidd 4 years old and a mite over excited but in the best of coat and hard muscular condition. Lovely head and eye with a bright alert expression, already in mature coat with colour coming in beautifully. A happy showgirl who moved so well, covering ground and keeping her firm level topline. CC, I understand to be her 26th today and the breed ‘s bitch record holder. 2. Charleton’s Ch House of Softy Indi Janeyjimjams (Imp Swe) Almost the selfsame remarks apply to this glamorous 5 year old who appeared in my notes as ‘quite lovely’.
