STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE BITCHES MANCHESTER 19

My thanks to Officers and Committee of Manchester Championship Dog Show for inviting me to judge on this occasion and for the warm and generous welcome and hospitality throughout. Also, my sincere thanks to my stewards and to all exhibitors who brought their bitches along on the day and gave me the chance to judge a lovely entry; it was a privilege and a pleasure and thoroughly enjoyable. As far as health issues go, I was surprised to find several exhibits with incorrect dentition which was generally confined to either tight or misplaced canines and was especially noticeable amongst youngsters which other judges may meet in the future. We have a responsibility to protect our breed or we could be faced with a bigger problem in the future. My first Stafford had inverted canines, so I know how disappointing this can be for owners. I did not find any other health issues during judging.

MPB (16/2)

1 Jackson's Jackabyte Bocouture; A very well put together black brindle baby who, at only six months, showed herself off well with a surprising level of confidence that can only be accredited to a patient handler! Lovely overall proportions, well shaped feminine head, correct proportion of skull to muzzle, dark eyes, clean lips, good bite and lovely expression. Promise of strength to come with a lovely straight front and well placed shoulders. Already developing sufficient lung and heart space, she sports a level topline and short coupling. Although still immature she has just what should be expected for her age in terms of muscle and angulation and moved well around the ring. Will watch her with interest and pleased to award BPB.

2 Stanway's Waystaff Honeymoon; Attractive and well balanced red/white bitch with only a few weeks separating this girl from 1 but much more mature for age. Feminine head of good proportions, dark eyes, and good mouth. Good flow of neck to shoulders and, again, good overall angulation and moved well so not easy to choose between these two girls and the decision could have gone either way. Another promising youngster but 1 had the edge on movement for me.

3 Winwood's Nerotoro Button Boots; Black brindle bitch - again just over six months old and a nicely put together youngster with a pleasing head and appealing expression, good mouth, neat ears and dark eyes. Many of the attributes of 2 but preferred the balance of the former.

PB (14/4)

1 Stanway's Waystaff Honeymoon (see above).

2 Johansson's Te Ora Magic Eclipse; Lovely 11 month old Bl/brindle standard bitch. Skull of good proportions, dark eye, correct mouth, rose ears all giving a typical Stafford expression. Well put together body with nice length of neck, well laid back shoulder, nice spring of rib for age - all essentials present and one to watch out for but preferred overall balance of 1.

3 Nicholson's Ballindona Bobbydazzler; Standard bl/brindle bitch with correct skull to muzzle, good bite, clean lips, dark eyes and correct skull to muzzle propotions. Straight front, good brisket, nice shoulders and moved ok.

JB (7/0)

1 Marshall's Marstaff True Grit; This beautiful 16 month old bitch commanded my attention from the moment she came into the ring. Full of attitude and with great ring presence, she has a classic head with clean mouth and correct dentition as well as the neatest of ears - which accounts for the very alert expression. Great overall balance with lovely length of neck, well laid shoulders, good spring of rib and lovely angulation. Shown in great fit condition and moved with purpose and grace; couldn't deny her the RBCC on the day!

2 Isles' Luthais Aurora Borealis; Standard black brindle bitch with pleasing head shape, nice neat ears, dark eyes and good mouth. Balanced and well put together, good hindquarters, moved well and had lovely tight feet. Met the wrong competition on the day!

3 Hopkins' Raspberry Riffle of Spiritstaffs; Red bitch with lovely black mask, clean head, neat ears, good bite. Well bodied, good angulation - would have liked her to be a little fitter.

YB (6/0)

1 Johnson's Ch Tillcar Baptism of Fire; This was a bitch that I couldn't take my eyes off! Bl/br with strong but feminine head, near ears, darkest of eyes, correct tight lipped mouth and bite. Beautiful off the front with everything behind matching. Short coupled with fluid movement and topline held on the move. No surprise when I discovered she was a Champion!

2 Hoggard & Afsar's Lonemoor Inion De for Zaagabull; Nicely balanced black brindle bitch with well shaped head, dark eyes, correct mouth. Good front and depth of brisket and moved well but couldn't beat 1 for me.

3 Anchor's Lonemoor Inion Realta; Very similar bitch to 2 (found these were litter sisters when I checked the catalogue) this girl had many of the attributes of 1 but preferred her sister's ears.

PGB (6/1)

1 Beesley's Maxstaff Miss Whizz; Nicely balanced red bitch. Good head with black mask, good dentition and eye colour commensurate with coat colour. Moved and handled well.

2 Freeman's Siriustaff Heart of Glass at Skystaff; Bl/brindle bitch with many similar qualities to 1 in terms of balance and good condition. Preferred the ears on 1.

3 Mewar & Millgates' Millamear Out Out; Very fit girl with all the essentials. Moved well and shown in good condition but 2 took it on overall balance.

LB (15/2)

This was a very strong bitch class and I was spoiled for choice. The girls in the first three places could have changed places on any other day, such was the quality. What a lovely situation to be in! 1 Rogers' Berrystock Miss Spitfire; Stunning black brindle bitch with strong, feminine head, excellent skull to muzzle proportions, pronounced cheek muscles, neat rose ears, dark eyes and alluring expression. Good depth of brisket, straight front, neck flowing into well laid back shoulders, spring of rib allowing ample room for heart and lungs. Short coupled, well muscled hindquarters and owned the ring when she moved. Gleaming with health and well deserving of BCC!!

2 Lee & Coleman's Berrystock Enigma Black; Another very classy bitch - not surprising for litter sisters(!) - this really made the choice a difficult one. These girls are almost identical in terms of their build, conformation and virtues and it was lovely to see such quality in this very good class. My choice was finally made just on the fact that 1 was a little fitter.

3 McDermott & Bernhardsson's Kings & Queens Over the Moon; As if two gorgeous girls weren't enough this bl/br bitch gave 1 and 2 a run for their money. Oozing class with a lovely head, near ears, dark eyes and excellent mouth, with body and movement to match. Well made, balanced and moved out well but not quite the presence of 2.

OB (7/1)

1 Butler's Joemikeste Play the Game; Elegant outline; top drawer black brindle bitch with white blaze, I really rated this girl. Lovely feminine head with sufficient strength, good skull to muzzle proportions, correct mouth, neat ears and dark eyes watching the judge unwaveringly! Straight front, good shoulder placement & spring of rib, strong hindquarters and good tail carriage. Shown in fit condition and moved with purpose, holding topline.

2 Stanway's Stormfire Crack the Code at Waystaff; Eye catching standard white/red bitch with strong head, good ears, dark eyes and correct mouth/teeth. Well proportioned body, good spring of rib and hindquarters. Moved with drive and held topline. Just lost out to 1 on alert expression.

3 Quigley's Rapstaff Wheeler Dealer at Cilledoire; Classy bl/br bitch with white markings. Nice head with good depth of skull, correct bite, pronounced cheek muscles and dark eyes. Nice straight front, brisket, shoulders and sufficient rib for heart and lungs but head got it for 2.

VB (1)

1 Hirst & Bibby's Ch Tarael Ciara; This lovely standard black brindle bitch doesn't acknowledge that she is almost nine years of age!! Still has all the qualities that made her a Champion - classic head, lovely rose ears, dark eyes and correct clean mouth with good bite. Straight front, nice neck length flowing to well laid back shoulders, short coupled, well muscled rear used to good effect moving around the ring; she wouldn't have been out of place in the Open Class. Congratulations on BVB and Best Veteran in Breed!
