STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE BITCHES NATIONAL TERRIER 14

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

BITCHES –

Many thanks to the sporting exhibitors for a very good entry by today’s standards (93 dogs, 104 entries), at what is the world’s premier terrier show & probably only next to Crufts on any terrier judge’s ‘to do’ list of general shows.
Quality was variable but there were some first class exhibits in the Limit & Open classes especially, as one would expect. I do not know if it is a reaction to Crufts, which was only four weeks previously & for which owners would aim to get their dogs in tip-top shape, or not, but some were carrying an extra couple of pounds, suggesting fitness & condition had been allowed to slip a little.
Heads were on the whole pretty good, although unusually I found an occasional one that was somewhat ‘doggy’. Another point of concern was a few exhibits starting to display some wrinkle mainly on the muzzle – this needs to be nipped in the bud if possible.
Front movement was quite good overall, but one or two were tied at the elbow producing an unnatural gait. Rear movement was variable with several spoiling their chances through being poor behind.
Toplines were reasonable on the whole & most held them reasonably well on the move.
Eyes were sufficiently dark on the whole, even in the blues on show, & even if one or two could have been slightly darker they were not sufficiently bad to affect my placings.
As most will know, judges of SBTs at championship shows are now required to complete a report on Breed Health Watch issues i.e. for Staffords, ‘breathing problems & misplaced lower canines’. I am pleased to say I found none with breathing difficulties, but regrettably I found three with canines that were digging directly into the upper gums or on the inner side possibly affecting the edge of the roof of the mouth. In addition there were a few others which were borderline & getting beyond pressing just against the upper gum a little too closely & threatening to do actual damage, although these tended to be on one side only.
Owners & breeders must pay serious attention to this to prevent a major problem arising. On the plus side, I found only one flush bite & none that was undershot. I was happy to agree with the dog getting BOB as he is a first class specimen that should go all the way in time.
The BPD scored on maturity over the very promising MPB for BP & he showed his socks off in the puppy group to go an excellent RBPIS.

MP (7,2a)

1 Molineux’s Jefmor Winter Solstice for Druidhawk, very promising 8 month old b/br, well balanced, head developing nicely for its age, good stop, strong muzzle, ample depth of skull, correct bite, good front, rib OK, ample bend of stifle, moved well. I suspect she may not be the fastest of maturers, but her time should come. BPB;

2 Wilson’s Wilstaff Iced Envy, pleasing 6 month red & very much the baby. Nice head, straight front, ample rib, good backend with correct bend of stifle, moved all right, promising & could do well over the summer;

3 Booth & Grimwood’s Ramblestaff Out To Get You.

P (12,2)

Not the easiest of classes & movement could have been better overall.

1 Williams’ Canakey Sweet Cool Delight, r/w, well balanced, very good body although carrying a fair amount of puppy fat which hopefully will disappear in time, nice straight front with tidy feet, well ribbed, good backend with correct bend of stifle, would have preferred a little more strength in head but still has time to come. Scored in movement over

2 Rogers’ Berrystock Charlies Angel, lovely headed b/br, strong all round, good front, nice spring of rib, not as good in the rearend as winner, but a lot to like about her;

3 Jenkins’ Belterstaff Rock Steady.

J (19,3)

1 Hopgood & Kerry’s Starolestaff Mystic Mimi of Antroboss, well balanced b/br, nice head with pleasing expression, dark eye, straight front, tidy feet, ample bone, short coupled, moved well, carrying a little extra weight but should harden off in time;

2 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Masud Tumaini, another b/br very much in the same mould & having the same attributes as 1, so a close decision, just could not match winner in spring of rib, but places could change on another occasion;

3 Wall & Webb’s Manark Molly’s Legacy.

Y (10,1)

1 Butler’s Seenworstaff Storm Warning at Joemikeste, r/w with nice head & pleasing expression, strong underjaw, nice dark eye, ample rib, moved well, scored in shoulder placement over 2 & in general balance;

2 Asker’s Dasmarnic Kiss N Tell, another red bitch, good head with depth through skull, good bite, strong muzzle, well ribbed, short coupled, good enough rearend & moved OK;

3 Desmond’s Elitebull Elegance.

N (5,2)

1 Dixon’s Wanderin Star, very feminine red, pleasing head, good bite, well ribbed, good backend, another that could have done with a pound or two less that showed on waistline, rear movement was fine;

2 MacDonald’s Tagstane Who Says, very strong brindle, strong head with good underjaw, well ribbed, could do with a bit more lift & some loss of excess weight to ensure better balance;

3 Nicholson & Finney’s Ballindona Caol Ila.

G (5,1)

1 T Masud Tumaini;

2 Thomas’ Sunnystone Olympic Dream, b/br, nice headed strong little bitch but needs to be kept in trim, straight front, well ribbed, good bone, good bend of stifle, moved well;

3 Thisby’s Kilghara’s Lady Guinevere.

PG (13,1)

1 Kemp & James’ Bekanbar Shining Star, nicely balanced b/br, good head with depth through skull, correct bite, ample bone, straight front, tidy feet, well ribbed, short coupled, good backend, moved OK;

2 Stanway’s Waystaff Little Cracker, very attractive br/w, very nice clean head, ample bone, well ribbed, preferred the rearend of winner;

3 Quinn’s Bowferry Life On Mars.

L (20,3)

A top quality class where many worthy exhibits had to go cardless.

1 McPhail’s Scorguie Stolen Kisses, beautiful b/br verging on top size, but well balanced. Lovely head, strong but still feminine, dark eye, correct bite, clean lipped, nice straight front, well boned, tidy feet, short coupled, ample bend of stifle & good rearquarters, moved well, had what it took to get her second ticket & hope her third will come soon. CC;

2 Bowin’s Briganah Limited Edition, not dissimilar to winner in many respects, superb head which was as good as any on the day, good bite, dark eye, nice straight front, short coupled, winner had perhaps a little better spring of rib & tail carriage. RCC;

3 McGowan & Owen’s Tagstane Fuchsia Struck.

O (13,3)

Another excellent class with quality throughout & an abundance of choice with placings that could change from day to day.

1 Johnson’s Challenger Incantation for Tillcarr, slightly smaller type of b/br, not overdone in any respect, nice head & expression, dark eye, correct bite, straight front, tidy feet, ample rib, good rearquarters, moved well, in the challenge. CC & RCC were that bit cleaner in the muzzle;

2 Simpson’s Ch Briganah Breaking Dawn, b/br, a worthy champion, strong all round, nice head, straight front, well boned, good rib, well made rearend, moved well;

3 Dickenson & Stewart’s Ch Devils Angel.
