STAFFORDSHIRE BULL CITY OF BIRMINGHAM 16 Judge: Mr L Lunn BEST OF BREED : 5158 HALIFAX Mr S K Jackstaff Spanish Gold
STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM 16 Staffordshire Bull Terriers I would firstly like to thank the association for affording me the honour of judging this prestigious show. Secondly to the exhibitors for the privilege of judging their dogs & lastly to my ring stewards who supported me so well. I know that what I am about to say has been said many times before but at this show it was so true! Many dogs that I admire unfortunately went cardless or were lower placed & often the decisions were so very close it was difficult to decide who to leave out but, perhaps that is how it should be given the quality of the animals that were there. I am pleased to say that on the whole it appears that movement is showing improvement even on the poor floor surface of the ring. Mouth faults seemed to be less evident on the day too but there are still too many. VD (3) 1 Folwell & Morris’ Rowellstaff Mr Ferguson, a well known, red dog with white chest blaze of good type who has always held his own in the ring. He has a good mouth with clean lips & a good head shape. Ears are rosed, well placed & he has well set, dark, eyes. With good quarters fore & aft he is short coupled & moves well. May I say a “welcome back” to his lady handler after serious ill health; 2 Smart & Worthy’s Fifa Blue, as the name indicates, a blue dog with a white front. With strong quarters & decent body shape he moves well enough. Unfortunately his mouth is not his fortune but he has a good head shape & a nice expression; 3 Cooper’s Blazing Star. MPD (6) 1 Jones’ Rougestaff The Lone Ranger, a real eyecatcher, who doesn’t disappoint & I think will go far. He is a deep red with a white chest & white socks to forelegs. Lovely headed with well placed teeth, tight lips & a nice dark round eye he has a pleasing expression. He has a very good, straight, front & good feet & for one so young a promising spring of rib which leads into short couplings & a good backend. He moves well holding the desired parallel movement & topline; 2 Breckell’s Chiswelstaff Let’s Dance, a b/br of a good standard. He is nicely headed for age with a scissor bite & defined cheek muscles. Ears are well placed as are his dark, round eyes. Not as well bodied up as 1 but is coming along nicely & is strong in all areas. He is short coupled & although he moved well, I just preferred the class winner’s movement. A well deserved place; 3 Ferguson’s Fergustaff Jack Frost. PD (5) 1 Freeman & Davies’ Kylestaff Moonlight Shadow, a very powerful b/br dog with a white badge on chest. He has a strong deep skull with decent set to ears & eyes. He has a good bite but is a little “lippy”. However that should not detract from the overall quality of the dog. Broad fronted with strong bone & decent rib he is short coupled with a good rear end & is a very good mover. BPD & BP; 2 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Papinashuash, a little smaller than 1, this b/br dog shares many of the same attributes. He also has the desired head shape with a scissor bite & nicely placed dark round eyes & rose shaped ears. He is also well off for bone. With a good body & short couplings & has slightly better rear angulation than 1 & he moves well enough but not as wide. It was one of those many close decisions; 3 Darby’s Manark Guns N Roses. JD (11,2) 1 Jones & Davies’ Maxsta Prince Of Celts, a cracking b/br dog with a white chest patch who took my eye straightaway. He excels in all areas with a very good head with all the qualities one would look for in eyes, ears & mouth. He owns a strong, shortish neck which melds into a body which is full of power & is nicely coupled. With a straight, well boned, lean muscled, front & a good backend he moves well. I would bet he’s a “nailed on” favourite to attain his title in the near future & was in my mind when awarding the top honours but such was the quality on the day! 2 Lewis’ Biggleswick Splash Of Ginge, a very attractive red sporting a white bib. He too has a good head with pronounced cheek muscles with tight lips over a mouth of good dentition. His eyes are dark & round & he has a nicely placed ear carriage. He also has a strong body with a good backend but he is slightly longer in the loin than 1 & is also a little loaded on the shoulder, nonetheless he deserved his place in a very good class; 3 Mayren’s Bellarouge Adonis at Fergiestaff. YD (7,2) 1 Asker’s Dazmarnic Cetewayos Kraal, a r/w dog with a classic head of the correct skull to muzzle ratio of 2 to 1. He is tight lipped & has good dental placement. With dark, round eyes well set he has a pleasing expression. Head on he has a lovely front with decent bone & is nicely ribbed which flows into short couplings & a well muscled rear. Good movement with enough drive. Just preferred his height & marginally better movement to 2; 2 Winwood & Tunnah’s Nerotoro Dark Element, this was, as stated, another of those very close decisions & this quality b/br was very unfortunate on the day. This chap is from one of those litters that come along very rarely where all of them, that I’ve seen, are from the top drawer & this one is no exception. He is very well put together. His head shape is good with good definition, lovely ears & eyes & a good terrier bite. His neck length is good being rather short & it flows into good shoulders. He has nice body proportions & is short coupled with a good backend. A very pleasing, typy Stafford; 3 Turner & Neale’s Tegumen Shadow Of A Saint. GD (7,1) 1 Clark’s Rowellstaff Ooh Aar Cantona, a strong red with a white throat who has an appealing expression. Broad & deep in the skull he has a good mouth & tight lips & his eyes are dark, round & nicely placed. Good ears both in shape & placement. With a body of good proportions he moves well on good padded feet propelled by good front & rearquarters; 2 T Papinashuash; M Guns N Roses. PGD (11,2) 1 Dean’s Kylestaff Muddy Water, a b/br dog I have seen from ringside & apart from it registering that he was a good mover I haven’t taken much notice of him but the more I went over him the better I liked him. He has a well defined head with the qualities I look for in mouth, eyes & ears. His neck is of the correct length & it runs into well placed shoulders & a broad chest behind which he is well ribbed, short coupled & has strong hindquarters which he uses to advantage. Nicely boned; 2 McDermott’s Macadermus Midnight Caller, a predominately b/br dog that apart from being a bit taller is very similar to 1 & I could see these two swapping places on many occasions. His head is strong & powerful with a decent mouth. He has a nice, dark eye & well positioned, rose shaped ears & he is nicely bodied with decent rib & decent quarters front & rear & although he also moves well I just preferred the winner’s movement & width of chest; 3 Davies’ Man Of God. LD (13,3) What a class with some very good dogs not even placed! 1 Ridley’s Jagstaff The Gardsman, I had previously given this very sound, red dog a 1st place as a youngster & he has developed into a super lad. He has a classic Stafford head with tight lips that cover a mouth which has a good, clean, terrier bite, strong teeth of good size which are well placed. His eyes are dark, round & correctly positioned to look straight ahead & he has rose shaped ears which he uses to aid a lovely expression. His neck is rather short, as is required, & melds into a clean white chested front of beautiful width & depth. He is well “ribbed up” & is short coupled with an excellent well muscled backend which allows him to move with definite drive on good padded feet. Very fit & very unlucky not to take the top spot! RCC; 2 Hall’s Geordiestaff Canny Laddie, cobby b/br with white flash to front. He too is a good headed dog with a wide, deep skull in which are set his dark, round shaped eye. Tight lipped he possesses a good mouth with well positioned teeth giving a true bite. He has strong quarters both in his front & rear. He is deep chested, well ribbed & reasonably short in the couplings & is wide enough between his well laid, long muscled shoulders. He is also nicely boned. Although not such a good mover as 1 he moves a little close at the back he, nonetheless deserved his place; 3 Hopkins & Gabel’s Golden Boy Trufflestaff of Spiritstaffs. OD (15,1) The same note applies to this class as the previous class. 1 Halifax’s Jackstaff Spanish Gold, an eyecatching flashy r/w dog who is the complete showman. He has, though all the attributes of a very good dog to go with it. He owns dark, round eyes & small rose shaped ears with a head that is both wide & deep. He also has good dentition covered by a slash lipped mouth. With a neck which shows strength & of the right length that flows into well laid shoulders his front on picture is superb. His body is well rounded & deep & he is short coupled with muscular thighs which propel him with that essential drive. Just pipped the RCC for me on a slightly cleaner outline. CC & BOB; 2 Coble’s Surestaff Wellington, a very powerful, predominately b/br dog whose presence in the ring could not be ignored. He has a chiselled head with defined cheek muscles & a lovely bite. His eyes are dark & well placed as are his rose shaped ears. He possesses a front which is wide with lean muscled, well laid shoulders & he is well off for bone. Nicely bodied up, he has good nicely muscled hams (which I am sorry to say is lacking in so many b/br today). His movement, which is both wide & parallel is second to none & he was one of the best if not the best mover of the day! 3 Hirst & Bibby’s Taraiel Buster Rhymes. GCD (3) 1 Buchan’s Happystaff Black Sabbath, a “typy”, nicely put together, b/br dog of good size. His head qualities are sound in mouth, eyes & ears, although he flies them a bit. Nicely bodied & reasonably short in the loin, he has good quarters & is a decent mover; 2 Mitchell & Ashton’s Our Little Cracker, a taller & rangier blue not placed in OD, he is strongly built with a decent head. His mouth is OK as are his ears & his eyes are commensurate with his coat colour. Not so well bodied as 1 or as wide but he moves well enough; 3 Robbins’ Twistaff Shining Moon at Jakastaff. VB (2) 1 Hopkins’ Ch Trufflestaff Monifa Kanika, a predominately b/br bitch who needs no introduction. Although she moves a little close at the back this should not detract in any way from her overall quality & qualities. She a superb head with lovely dark, round eyes, very good earset & with no fleshiness to the lips, her mouth has a true terrier bite. She is well bodied up, is short coupled & has a nicely muscled backend. BV; 2 Hall’s Rekrah Miss Attitude cum Geordiestaff, a b/br with a white flash to her throat. Lovely headed with well placed ears & dark eyes she has a body that is still well rounded. With still good quarters you can tell that she’s obviously been a decent bitch in her time. O.K. movement & typical of the breed type. MPB (5) 1 Fox & Hemstock’s Jolihem Honey Bunch, for a minor puppy from a famous & well regarded kennel this red bitch has plenty of power. With a beautiful head, she has lovely round & well positioned dark eyes. Her ears are rosed & nicely placed but look a tad long at present but should look better when her head develops a bit more. Body wise she excels with a wide, straight front that is accentuated by a white bib & plenty of bone, with a good, well rounded rib & short couplings, she also has a well muscled hind end. Moved well. Very appealing; 2 Norton’s Tikkurlian Spot On, another from a well regarded kennel, this is a very nice mahogany brindle that took my eye immediately with her wide, white throat & chest. This girl is so well put together. With a lovely shaped head she has beautiful eyes in colour, shape & position & nice shaped ears, which although these are a little flighty she used them to advantage to give a lovely expression. Short coupled & nicely ribbed she too has nicely muscled hindquarters & moves well; 3 Rogers’ Ginstean Second Chance for Ynysstaff. PB (6) 1 Scotland’s Callastaff Moon River, a well made b/br with excellent bone & exuding strength in all areas who will trouble the best later on. With a good skull which is both wide & deep, she owns dark, round eyes & nice ears & these give her the classic Stafford look. With a strong neck that flows down into a very good front which shows no bunching or looseness in the shoulder she presents a “foursquare” picture. She has a nicely ribbed body for a puppy & is short coupled with a strong backend. Movement is OK if a little close at the back but again not enough to lose first place in which I had no hesitation BPB. Just missed out to the dog for BP; 2 Cartwright’s Zakstaff Winterfell, a very similar type of bitch to 1 in many respects & many of the comments apply. She has a very good head with all the qualities one has come to expect from this kennel, good eye shape & colour & a nice ear carriage. Strongly necked & with a good front, she also has a very well ribbed body. Short coupled & with a decent hind end, she moves well; 3 Funnell’s Powerpack Cherokee. JB (14,1) 1 Membury’s Mitzstaff Strike A Pose, a clean lipped r/w pied who is nicely put together. With a deep through lovely shaped head she has a nice dark eye correctly placed & decent ears. Powerful & good in front & rearquarters, she is well bodied & short in the loin giving the impression of overall strength. A sound moving bitch & this was the difference that won her the class; 2 Byrne & Gartland’s Carandstaff Moondance, although my impression was that this b/br is a little short in the muzzle for me, she is nonetheless a very sound dog & not to be missed. Broad & deep in the skull she has a pleasing expression with well set & dark eyes & good ear placement & shape. A strong neck flows into a good nicely laid shoulders between which is a pleasing chest. Nicely bodied up, she has very good hindquarters which allow her to move well on good feet. She holds her topline at all times; 3 Butler’s Joemikeste Play The Game. YB (8,1) 1 Winwood & Tunnah’s Nerotoro Stella, another from this excellent litter & probably the best. She presents a beautiful, clean outline when viewed from all angles. Feminine & lovely headed, she has a superb eye which is both round in shape & dark. Clean in the lip, she has very good dentition & a scissor bite. She also has, apart from a lovely front, a good rib with excellent depth to her brisket & is short coupled with decent rearquarters. Moves OK on very good feet; 2 Matthews’ Janjoma Boniwee Gurl, a nice b/br with pleasing features. Very feminine but with a very nice head with good width between the eyes & depth to skull & a good terrier bite. Very nicely fronted, she possesses a well shaped rib & is fairly short in couplings. Moved with enough drive from a good backend. With not quite the bone of 1 but she, like her, has plenty of daylight underneath; 3 Johnson’s Ginstean My Girl Lollipop at Nikkylestaff. GB 1 Bullhawk Maybe Mytime, a very good quality b/br girl who has a white front & socks to forelegs with “ticking” to both which is, at first, a little off putting but looking past this I found a sound bitch with all the points one looks for in head & body. She moves very well & has a straight & quite wide front & good hindquarters. With a lovely expression she is very pleasing; 2 Funnell’s Powerpack Cherokee, a nicely proportioned predominately b/br. She has a pleasing head with well placed ears & lovely, dark eyes which are nicely set. Reasonably tight lipped, she has a good mouth. A nice neck flows into a good forechest behind which is a body with a rounded ribcage & a decent loin. With a good backend she moves well enough; 3 Ford & Williams’ Dajast Sweety With Jam’n Loz. PGB (8,1) Very difficult to split 1 & 2! 1 Peacock’s Manark Star Of Stoner, a predominantly white bitch with a red patch over her left eye she has a deep & wide skull. She has a good scissor bite & nice eyes, which are coat commensurate & well set. Ears are a little wide at the base but OK. She has a short, strong neck & good forequarters & a powerful well ribbed body & is well off for bone. Short coupled & well built in the hindquarters, she moves with power; 2 Waters’ Pride Staff’s Happy Feet at Ashstock, what a lovely red bitch this is. A pleasing picture from any angle. She has an excellent, wide, straight front with plenty of depth to her brisket & being nicely ribbed, she is short coupled with a good nicely muscled rear end which she uses to move very well. She has a smashing head with a tight lipped, black masked foreface covering a very good, well set mouth & although her head is wide & has depth she retains that look of femininity & with well placed eyes & rose ears she takes the eye; 3 McDermott’s Macadermus Dawn Run. LB (9) 1 Hopwood & Holt’s Boldstock Here I Am, a very well put together b/br with a white bib that accentuates her broad & deep front. She owns a strong head of lovely proportions with wide set, almost black eyes & very nicely set ears giving her an appealing expression. Her neck is both strong & of good length & runs into a well ribbed, powerful body that is short coupled & is finished off by very good hindquarters that propel her across the ring with purpose. I have admired this girl from ringside & she is just what I expected; 2 Jenkins’ Belterstaff Rock Steady, a white throated, very eyecatching red sporting a black mask. What a head this girl has. It is very wide & has depth but for me a tad short in the muzzle which didn’t help in trying to assess her mouth due to her panting, however when she stopped it looked fine. She has large, round, dark eyes set wide apart that look straight ahead. She has excellent quarters at front & rear with a nicely shaped body & short couplings. She is nicely put together & moves with drive; 3 Duncan’s Nettleworth No Nonsense. OB (16,4) 1 Rollin’s Seenworststaff Tea For Two, what a classic Staffordshire Bull Terrier this red bitch is! Believe me she ran the dog very close for BOB. An excellent bitch in all departments. Feminine but beautifully headed with a black mask, she has superb eye placement as well as colour. Lovely small, rose shaped ears & a very good skull ratio. Strongly muzzled she has a very good mouth possessing well placed & sized teeth giving a scissor bite. With nice width between her well laid shoulders & nice bone, she has a very pleasing front. She is well bodied up, short coupled & has excellent quarters at her rear. She holds her topline in all situations, has parallel movement & moves with that essential drive; 2 Pijloo’s Virzula Irresistable, a white, well boned, bitch of undoubted quality & one I liked very much. She is very strongly headed with dark eyes that are nicely placed & shaped & good ears. Cleanly mouthed with very good dentition, she has a clean scissor bite. She has a powerfully built body with plenty of rib, is short in the loin & she also has very good quarters at front & rear & she uses these to propel her with purpose. RCC. GCB (2) 1 Moore’s She’s A Rock Star, an upstanding, well muscled bl/br with a decently proportioned head. Eyes are commensurate with colour & well placed & she has a nice earset. A bit pinch fronted & loaded on the shoulder, she nonetheless has a decent body & a good backend. She is also very fit & moves OK; 2 Daly & Lees’ Starolestaff Arabella at Boscador, a wider fronted but looser about the shoulder b/br bitch, she is still quite pleasing. She has a very nice head with dark eyes & rose shaped ears & a decent mouth with quite pronounced cheek muscles. She is muscular but less well off for bone & doesn’t move as well. LARRY LUNN
