STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM 23

Thank you to the Society for inviting me to Judge my own Breed at this top class Championship show. The rings were of good size and plenty of space adjacent for exhibitors. My two ring stewards were excellent and kept everything moving swiftly and my thanks go to them both. The quality of the exhibits I examined were very good overall and on close examination I only found a few with untidy teeth and only one level bite. Some small tight canines, but definitely not inverted or converging. I did see some lovely examples of perfect bites with good sized teeth. I didn’t see any animal displaying any problems relating to noisy breathing or distressed behaviour. On the whole the quality of the bitches was of a higher standard than the dogs. Some exhibits lost out on the lack of actual fitness whilst others deserved a place but there are only 5 to give. My genuine thanks to all of you who entered for my opinion on that day, obviously we all have opinions and anything can change on any given day.

1 Lewis’ CH BIGGLESWICK SPLASH OF GINGE. Standard red dog with a lot to like and appreciate. His physique is outstanding for a veteran, he certainly doesn’t look his age. Good bone with straight front and neat tight feet. Enough width to his chest. Balanced masculine head size and shape with pronounced cheek muscles. Dark round eye with great pigmentation. Ample underjaw. Correct depth of brisket and lovely rib. He had a level topline with an obvious definition into the tuck up loin area. Strong back end and good bend of stifle. Turned out in top condition. Shown and handled well. He moved with purpose. He won Best Veteran Dog and later I was pleased to award him BEST VETERAN IN BREED and he went on the take Veteran Terrier Group 4.

2 Rowe & South’s Illori Akinlana JW ShCM VW. B/br dog of fit muscular hard condition. A different frame and build to 1st not as strong but a credit to the term ‘veteran’. Clean head with no excess of flesh. Dark eye, ears ok. Clean shoulder not overdone into straight front. Tidy feet. Short powerful neck. Good topline. Pleasing profile.
