STAFFORDSHIRE BULL BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 24 Judge: Mr Lee Rhodes & Mr Tony Pritch STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE DOGS BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL 24 DOGS I was quite honoured to be asked to officiate at this show, which is historically important to the breed, being the show that scheduled Challenge Certificates for Staffordshire Bull Terriers for the first time. The CC winners that day were Boxley’s Vindictive Montyson and Dunn’s Lady Eve. I was lucky enough to meet both men when I was a youngster and wonder what they would think of today’s overall show exhibitions. Good stewards and a sporting crowd made for a good day. Many thanks to all the exhibitors for their time and effort, providing me with some quality Staffords to assess. 1 Mills’ Stormbreakers Vengeance at Milarkebull. Red. Clean headed with a good foreface He has plenty of width to his front, ribs carried well back and he is well tucked up with a visible waistline. Rear showed some muscular development. Moved quite erratically. 2 Nightingale & Griffiths’ Cicynnes Heaven Sent at Marellastaff. B/br/white. Much the same applies to this dog as 1st. Head is clean. Straight front but not as broad as 1st yet and maybe a shade longer in body. He also was quite erratic on the move. 1 Cushley’s Bullbrothers Montecristo. Red. A neat looking puppy with a good head shape and strength to jaw, coal black round eyes and tidy ears. Front is straight and clean. He shows signs of his body starting to develop, time is on his side. He performed steadily and moved well for one so young. 2 Sandford’s Jodel’s Knights White Satin at Lornicstaff. White & red. A little more developed all round than 1st. Showing an alert expression with dark round eyes, ears could be a little tidier. Good width to front, ribs beginning to develop with a short coupling. His rear also shows signs of development. Unfortunately it was difficult to assess movement as he was keen to do it his way. I would expect him to improve with experience. 3 Martinez’s Bullbrothers Monster Truck. 1 Moorcroft’s Ellchansha Charm The Devil at Moorstar. An impressive b/br puppy who shows plenty of presence and character. A clean powerful head with good length to muzzle, clean lips and strong jaws housing correct dentition. He has a very appealing expression with dark round eyes and neat well shaped ears. A nice length of leg gives the desired lift, front is straight, broad and deep with brisket to elbow. Ribs starting to spring, short coupled and showing a definite waist, level topline in profile also held on the move. A good width to thighs which are quite well muscled, his limbs are straight and strong on good feet. He moved across the ring with reach and drive once he settled. A very nice puppy, who I believe will go on to greater things. BPD & BPIB. 2 Duncan’s Rhebelstaff Hunky Dory. B/br. A powerfully built puppy who gave a good account of himself. A strong deep skull, a wide blunt muzzle and distinct stop. A good width to front and showing decent all round body development. Not the profile or feet of 1st at present. I would have liked to have seen him with a little more vigour on the move. His condition secured his placing today but more to come from him I think. 3 Deen’s Ellchansha The Devil In Me at Tondoo. 1 Lloyd’s Kalostaff Es Lo Que Es JW. B/br. A strong headed dog with good skull to muzzle ratio, strong underjaw and good bite, a good expression with desirable features. Front is deep and wide, a good length to ribs with a level topline. Rear development was of good order with well bent stifle and well let down at hock. He moved soundly fore and aft. 2 Bennett’s Powerpack Singularity. B/br. A nice clean dog with a powerful skull and muzzle, small tidy ears added to an alert typey expression. Straight broad front, deep ribs of good length and short coupling, rear well bent and let down. He also went round the ring well. 3 Thorley & Fearnley’s Crewestaff Half Blud Prince. 1 Green’s Sikaistaff Black Barrel. B/br. A nice all round standard sized dog. He has plenty of strength to his skull and muzzle while housing a correct bite, desirable furnishings give a good expression. He scored in front which is straight, broad and deep. Well laid shoulders, level topline, good length to ribs, short coupled and decent rear development. Looked sound and confident on the move. 2 Miller’s Skyland Imperial JW. B/br of good type. A good head shape with dark round eyes and neat ears. His body is well developed and short coupled. Rear carried nice muscle tone on wide thighs. Not the movement of 1st today. 3 Woodward’s Cotsward Drops Of Jupiter. ND (7,1) 1 Marsden’s Jayneze Doctor Jimmy at Modlife. Brindle. A great head shape to this dog, skull is strong and deep with desirable length to muzzle, powerful jaws and good bite. He has a very nice body shape to him with a wide deep front and a decent length of leg. Ribs are well back and sprung, loin is well tucked up and light, with a good topline and underline. A well angulated and defined rear with good muscle tone. Movement was sound and steady, whilst being well handled. 2 Kendall’s Marenystaff Lord Spiderman (Imp Esp). A nice flashy, upstanding pied dog. Maybe not as strong in head as 1st, he shows a powerful muzzle with strong jaws and good dentition. Front is clean and true as is the rest of him. Decent length and depth to ribs, with a well made rear. A little unsettled on the move, but nevertheless a nice clean looking dog. 3 Bennett’s Powerpack Singularity. 1 Kendall’s Marenystaff Lord Spiderman (Imp Esp). See 2nd ND. 2 Clark’s Rowellstaff Easy Tiger. A lovely standard sized brindle, whose colour is sadly not as common as in the past. He’s a neat looking lad who is well put together with his good head shape and desirable features. Width and depth to front, well defined body and good rear musculation. Movement was of good order. 3 Martinez’s Bullbrothers Howay The Lads. 1 Yates’ Zakdan Devious Devil JW. B/br. Standard sized dog with nothing overdone, ultimately giving good balance. He has strength to skull and muzzle, a very desirable expression carrying all the correct features. A straight front of good width, brisket to elbow. A well sprung rib of good length, short coupling, level topline and well muscled and angulated rear end . He went well both ways. 2 Kruger’s Powerpack Severus Snape. B/br. Very similar to 1st but maybe a tad longer in muzzle. Width and depth to skull and powerful jaws. Nice straight front, brisket about right. Ribs of good length, definite waist and good tuck up. Thighs are well muscled and of good width. He also went well both ways whilst holding his topline. 3 Foster’s Vadeliza Houdini. 1 Wilson’s Northstaff Nightmare JW. Attractive looking b/br who is well in standard. Head shape is good with a strong muzzle of sufficient length, jaws are strong with a good bite, plenty of fill under eyes which are round and dark, all enhanced by tiny neat ears giving a grand expression. A straight front which has good width, deep brisket and ribs well sprung of good length. I would have liked to have seen him a little lighter in loin, although there was visible muscle development on thighs adding to a good rear assembly. His overall show condition was of high order, his coat was gleaming. He moved soundly holding his topline whilst carrying his tail correctly. DRCC. 2 Butler’s Alport On Tour at Eternalco. B/br. Standard sized dog, who pushed 1st all the way. Cracking headpiece with a good muzzle, a most desirable expression with all the necessary furnishings. A soundly constructed front. Good definition to body showing a well sprung rib of good length and definite waist. Well muscled thighs and stifles well bent. He has a noticeable degree of fitness. Went well fore and aft. 3 Harper & Whittaker’s Bethaleese’s Poldark. 1 Patis & Moutaud’s Robin Dark Knight Du Fleuron Champenois (Fra). A bit of a surprise package for me here. A standard sized b/br who has a head of good shape with well developed cheek muscles, blunt muzzle, strong jaws carrying a correct bite set square to jaw, medium sized dark round eyes and small ears add to his expression. A strong neck leads to clean shoulders and a good front assembly with nice width to his straight front and brisket to elbow. Ribs are well sprung of decent length, topline and underline give him a good profile, a good tuck up and a definite waist showing a lightness in loin. Rear assembly is well constructed with wide well muscled thighs, well bent stifle and well let down at hock. He also carries his tail well. In all showing a well defined balanced body while static. On the move he really ups his game, whilst holding his balance and topline, he shows good reach and drive, he moves round the ring with some style. On the whole this dog has many qualities to attract. He gave a good account of himself in the Group, making the final 6. DCC & BOB. 2 Stanway’s Waystaff Strikes Mayhem. White & red. He has a typical Stafford shaped head with a deep wide muzzle of good length and a very appealing expression. A wide front of good depth, well sprung ribs with a good tuck up and a visible waistline. A well muscled rear includes good width to thighs with stifles well bent and hocks well let down . He carries his tail correctly. He was exhibited in hard condition and went well fore and aft. A good honest Stafford. 3 Robinson & Marsh’s Hamason Fynnbar Firecraker. 1 Rowe & South’s Illori Akinlana JW ShCM VW. Brindle of almost 10 years. Still has a sporty physique about him and is hard to the touch. Not lost much in head which is still strong with powerful jaws and good bite. Front is of good width. Body is well maintained and is carried by strong legs and feet, whilst keeping a level topline. A well angulated rear with good width to thighs, he has plenty of drive on the move. 2 Lewis’ Ch Biggleswick Splash Of Ginge. Red of 9 years. A well built dog with a powerful head and muzzle. Deep and wide front. Good rib and short coupled, rear is well muscled, He carries his tail well while on the move. 3 Dean’s Kylestaff Muddy Water JW ShCM VW. 1 Blake’s Llanstaffs The One. Bl/br. Very clean lines. Good head and neat ears, clean muzzle with correct bite, good ratio of muzzle to head, nice round eye, pleasing expression. Straight front with enough bone and tidy feet. Stronger than 1st. Good head and ears, decent length of muzzle with correct bite. Well off for bone, plenty of width to front and decent feet. Ribs are well sprung, longer cast in back. Coat in good order. Reasonably hard to the touch, good muscle on rear. Moved well. 3 Walker’s Torkavi The Last Dragon at Teshleystaf JW. 1 Mason’s Magellason Tipsy Tilly. Bl/br/white. Nice style pup. Good head with neat ears and good eye, strong muzzle of good length with good bite and clean lipped, giving a pleasing expression. Decent width to chest on well boned legs with tidy feet. Ribbing up nicely, close coupled and tidy topline giving a good profile. Stifles are decent with muscle developing and good tailset. Moved like a puppy should. 2 Martinez’s Bullbrothers Star Dust. Fawn/white. Different style to 1st. Decent head, ears ok, nice dark eye, longer in muzzle than 1st, clean foreface with good bite. Decent front and good well boned legs on tidy feet. A good spring of rib for a youngster. Longer in back than 1st. Rear is developing well. Decent coat. Moved steady. 3 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Nyekundu Itri. PB (4) 1 Liggins & Curd’s Ellchansha Under Your Spell at Knockon. Bl/br. Very clean outline to this girl. Ample head, neat ears and a nice dark eye, good length of muzzle with clean lips, bite ok, giving a lovely expression, in an ideal world I would prefer a tad more underjaw but that’s nitpicking. Decent front with enough lift on good legs with ample bone. Well sprung ribs of good length, good topline and underline, well bent stifles and well let down hocks, giving you a great profile. Her coat was gleaming which sets off the whole picture. BPB. 2 Duncan’s Rhebelstaff Sweet Thing. Bl/br/white. Stronger type in head, decent ears and nice dark eye, strong blunt muzzle housing a good bite, giving you a good expression. Front ok with width, brisket well developed for a youngster, well off for bone and feet ok. Ribbing up well, very short in back and well bent stifles. Her coat was in good order. Good head with no excess flesh, neat ears, nice length of muzzle housing a good bite, clean in lip and lovely dark eye giving you a grand expression, she’s always alert. Straight front on good legs and feet. Well sprung ribs of good length, middle cast in back, topline held, nice tight body with no excess. Good stifles muscling up well. Good underline in profile. Moved free and easy, nothing overdone. Possibly one to watch. 2 Blake’s Llanstaffs The One. See 1st SBB. 3 Gallagher’s Alshancorn Says Who JW. 1 Constant’s Sikaistaff Cask Strength JW. Bl/br. Nice standard size bitch. Good head proportions with neat ears and round dark eye, clean in lip, giving a clean feminine expression but still strong. Decent legs with good bone on decent feet. Plenty of width to chest. Ribs are developing, topline and underline give a lovely profile of a square Stafford. Stifles are well bent and let down at hocks and a neat tail completes the picture. 2 Plumstead’s Kamaristaffs Royal Gem at Jazostaff JW. Bl/br/white. Slightly stronger all over than 1st. Strong head with neat ears and good eye placement, broad muzzle and underjaw, giving a nice expression. Good front on well boned legs with decent feet. Well sprung ribs, more longer cast in back. Well bent stifles and let down at hocks, good tailset. Coat in good order. Have seen her in better nick in my opinion. As always, shown impeccably by her lady handler. Squareness of 1st took my eye. 3 Miller’s Skyland Consort JW. 1 Bainborough’s Vadeliza Box Of Trix. Bl/br. Good head and ears with nice dark eye, ratio of head to muzzle correct with very clean lips and a decent underjaw, again a lovely expression. Nice size front on good legs and feet. Ribs are well sprung and of correct length. Good well muscled thighs that are hard to the touch and hocks are well let down. Coat in good order. She was put down hard, very tight body with no excess. Movement was hard to assess as she was like a coiled spring and played her handler up, as Staffords do. 2 Bennett’s Scipelei Against All Odds. Bl/br/white. Again another nice style of a standard Stafford. Close call between these two. Good head, tidy ears and nice eyes, decent muzzle and underjaw, giving a good expression. Front ok on well boned legs, feet ok. Good neck, well sprung ribs and close coupled. Well bent stifles and well let down hocks. Good physical condition and good square profile. The main deciding factor was the hard conditioning of 1st. 3 Winrow & Greaves’ Jayneze Ramona. 1 Jones’ Foyleoak Iron Duchess. Brindle/white. Strong head with tidy ears, good strong muzzle and deep underjaw, plenty of fill under her dark eyes giving a somewhat hard expression. Good front on good legs and feet. Decent neck and well sprung ribs of good length, more middle cast in back. Good stifles and well let down hocks. Lovely coat. Moved with ease. In an ideal world for me I would like her harder to the touch. 2 Funnell’s Powerpack Helga Hufflepuff. Bl/br, standard size. Good head proportions, neat ears, something you don’t see much these days is the split down the middle of the head showing the muscle on the skull to cheek muscle which took my eye, dark eye and clean foreface, nice old style expression. Good front on good legs. Well sprung ribs of good length. Would prefer more bend to stifles and would like to see her harder. 3 Gray’s Aberstaff Merry Of Soul. 1 Maskell’s Dekayro She’s Like The Wind. Bl/br/white. Decent up to size bitch with a good skull, neat ears and nice dark round eye, good length of muzzle with correct bite and clean in lip, nice expression. Plenty of lift with a decent front on well boned legs with tight feet. Good neck and good ribs of correct length and well sprung. Good stifles and well let down hocks with decent muscle tone to thighs. Coat in good condition. Shown well and moved with ease. 2 Rowe & South’s Illori Constellation JW. Bl/br. One thing this bitch has is a well proportioned head, good strong skull, neat ears and good eyes, strong clean muzzle, clean in lip, good bite and good underjaw. Enough lift with a decent front on good legs with ample bone and tight feet. Decent neck, well sprung ribs of good length and a well muscled rear, giving a good profile. This kennel is known for the excellent conditioning of their dogs, in my opinion possibly a little too much off her today plus I’ve seen her go a lot better. 3 Martinez’s Bullbrothers Mist Mydnight. 1 Davis & Booth’s Sharmara Patronus Charm. Brindle/white with a grand expression. Good head and ears which she uses well, always watching, lovely dark eye, good strong muzzle and underjaw with a strong bite and clean lipped. She shows herself to her advantage, she has that very intense look about her but still remaining feminine. Good straight front on ample boned legs with decent feet. Good neck, shoulders show no looseness. Well sprung ribs of correct length. Decent rear angulation with muscle on both thighs good. I would prefer a tad more definition in the loins to give her that more functional profile. Moved free and easy. A beautiful coat showing off her brindle, we could do with more of this colour back in the breed. She was alert and showed herself off all the while in the ring. A pleasure to award her the CC and I hope more to come, good luck. 2 Land’s Zivannaz No Stopping Me Now at Winzack. Smart fawn & white. Good head and ears with lovely dark eyes giving a wicked expression, dark mask, longer in muzzle than 1st, good bite, clean lip and decent underjaw. Clean straight front on good legs with ample bone and good feet. Well sprung ribs of good length, deep brisket, well tucked up and light in loin. Well muscled rear quarters. Proper Stafford coat, short and harsh. Put down in hard physical condition. 3 Woolley’s Bethaleese’s Bewitched. 1 Crawford & Wilson’s Ch Northstaff Bay Bomber for Crowstaff JW. Bl/br/white. If I’m totally truthful this bitch is bang up my street. Beautiful clean lines right down to her tail. Grand headpiece, good skull, neat ears and great eye placement, good length of muzzle with strong bite and clean lipped, this head scores high. Tremendous clean straight front with plenty of lift without being over the top and decent feet. Great neck, well sprung ribs of correct length and depth, decent topline. Well bent sweeping stifles into well let down hocks. Coat in great condition. A great underline profile. A real sporty and functional looking animal. The only downside, I would have liked her harder to the touch, nevertheless this is a top drawer Champion Staffordshire Bull Terrier. A really close call, but the showgirlship of the Limit winner took my eye. A well deserved RCC. 2 Regeer’s Multi/Int Ch Noucamp Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark. Bl/br. I really liked this girl, very clean lines and a good size. Good head and ears, nice dark eye, fair length to muzzle and clean lipped, good bite and underjaw. Enough lift with good width to front standing on well boned legs and good feet. Well sprung ribs and good coupling. Decent rear angulation with ample muscle. Coat in good order. Moved well. Easy to see how she gained her title. 3 Duncan’s Ch Jackabyte Wonderlust at Rhebelstaff. 1 Rowe & South’s Illori Bootie Luv. Dark brindle. Once again you have to admire the condition this kennel turn their dogs out in. Standard in size. Nice clean head with neat ears and good eye, clean muzzle and underjaw with clean lips housing a good bite. Good front on solid well boned legs and good feet. Well sprung ribs of good length, topline good and a decent underline. Well muscled rear quarters. Moved soundly. Physical condition superb for an oldie. She beat their own Veteran dog for BVIB. 2 Robinson, Robinson-Cox & Cox’s Studstaff Sugar And Spice of Hamason JW ShCM. A standard fawn & white. Good head shape with tidy ears and good length to muzzle, bite ok. Good width to front and well boned legs on good feet. Well sprung ribs and topline good. Decent stifle and well let down hocks. Proper Stafford coat, short and harsh in good order. She moved really well alongside her lady handler’s electric wheelchair, both working well together in harmony, a pleasure to see. 3 Daly-Lees’ Starolestaff Arabella at Boscador.
