STAFFORDSHIRE BULL WELSH KC 10 Judge: Mrs C Lee STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE WELSH KC 10 Staffordshire Bull Terrier Many thanks to the exhibitors for the very good entry – both in numbers and quality. Fortunately there were very few absentees and thanks to the sporting spectators who greeted my decisions with enthusiasm by the sound of things. I thought the Bitches were overall better than the Dogs – although that is not to say that there were not some excellent Dogs present. I am concerned in both sexes with the exaggeration in light weight animals – there was a moment when I truly believed I might be able to ‘span’some of the ribs. The standard asks for ‘great strength for size’. I am tired of reading ‘too strong for me’ – we are all encouraged to look for the positive so why not say ‘preferred the weaker bone etc of this specimen’ – doesn’t sound so good does it? The front of the Stafford is changing dramatically. Too many have lost the ‘slight turn out’ from the pasterns – such a characteristic feature of the Breed. Not only are too many feet facing straight forwards from an upright pastern but a quite a few are actually ‘pin toe-ing’. On the whole the mouths were good – a couple with close canines and a couple more who are just hanging onto their scissor bite. Unfortunately some, even the youngsters had dirty teeth which is unforgivable. MPD(6) 1 McDermott’s Waystaff Dutch Chieftain. Strongly built pied. Nice head shape, strong foreface, dark eye. Plenty of bone. Feet need some work. Enough rib for his age, good back end. Needs to tighten up all round – which should come with age. At least this owner is happy to let him carry a little ‘puppy fat’ and not strip him out – which is not a good thing in a young animal. 2 Williams’ Jodels Excalibur. Promising deep red pup. Nice head - good skull, fair stop, good strength through the foreface. Clean shoulders, good bone, enough spring of rib for age. Good topline. In general, it all just needs to mature. Moved and handled well. 3 Priest’s Mintmar Got The Look. PD(9,1) 1 Wall & Webb’s Manark Predator. Black brindle dog or great balance. Compact and tightly built. Fair head of good proportions and with the darkest of eye and well placed ears. Clean shoulders, well boned front legs. Must not be encouraged to stand pin-toed. Short coupling, well sprung rib and pronounced waist. Nice bend of stifle, good condition, moved the best in the class. BPD and BPIB. 2 Hart’s Albermarbull Ice White. Typer predominantly white. Very good head shape and depth throughout, dark eye, well set, rose ears. Good bone but feet could be tidier. Good rib, well let down stifles. Unfortunately did not move very well as he ‘crabbed’ – but this could be to do with lack of experience in the ring (the dog, not the handler I mean!) 3 Hyde’s Sedgbred Black Diamond. JD(12,5) 1 Lewis & Smart’s Blazinstaff Blazin Justice. The Dog of the day for me. Great head – which is not helped by the un-even marking – he is red with white - which detracts from the overall picture. Good skull and well developed cheek bumps. Good stop and round dark eyes. Good proportions and depth throughout, including the muzzle. Rose ears properly placed at the side of his head. Strong neck, slightly heavy on the shoulder, good depth of brisket. Good bone, tidy well padded feet. Level topline, good bend of stifle and moved with purpose and drive. Pleased to award him the CC. 2 Ogbourne’s Welshstaff Credit Crunch. Brindle – a youngster for this class. Admired especially the overall balance and compactness of this dog. Well shaped head of correct proportions. Well placed , dark, round eye. Nice rose ears, properly set. Good strength throughout the head. Clean shoulders, correct length of clean neck, good bone and width of front. Nice spring of rib for his age. Good bend of stifle and tuck up at the waist. Moved well, once he had settled. 3 Galvin & Schofield’s Scousious Pretzel Logic. YD(3,1) 1 Stevens & Williams’ Charmonics Ready To Rumble. Brindle. Very strong head although I would prefer it to be a little cleaner – which may well occur with age and his skin fills out. Round dark eye, good stop - all these attributes giving the forward facing ‘look straight at you’ appearance that we desire. Very short foreface. Fair length of neck leading to clean shoulders, nice bone, but feet could be better padded. Short coupled. Could have moved better at the front. 2 Smith’s Kylorda Koda At Simjest. Black brindle who did not look particularly happy on the day – although he appears to be a very nice character. Very clean head but not particularly well defined – a bit more stop would improve. Good dark eye. Clean shoulders. Well off for bone, but feet could be better padded. Good rib and well bent stifle, strong rear quarters. Moved well. ND(3) 1 Wall & Webb’s Manark Predator. 2 Hyde’s Sedgbred Black Diamond. Brindle of strength – close decision with some of these youngsters. Strong head of depth, dark eye and well placed ears. Good bone and width of chest. Tends to stand a bit lopsided – i.e. turns one foot out more than the other - I think the handler could help here. Good spring of rib, nice tuck up to waist. Stifles well bent. 3 Priest’s Mintmar Got The Look. GD(4) 1 Wall & Webb’s Manark Predator. 2 Hyde’s Sedgbred Black Diamond. 3 Miller’s Crashkon Puff Daddy Of Skyland. PGD(8,1) 1 Nickson’s Sharoc Esprit Santos. Very compact, strong red dog. Excellent head. Good stop, round dark eye, ears of the best. Well developed cheek bumps, good proportions of foreface to skull, strong underjaw. Good width and depth to front, good bone and well sprung rib. Well muscled hind quarters with good bend of stifle. He moved very well. 2 Mangean’s Action Doggy Dog Chester One. Brindle of good size. Nice head – good stop, well placed ears, dark round eye, good depth of foreface. Clean shoulders and well boned front. Enough rib, a little long cast. Good bend of stifle. Actually looked better when free standing. Moved well. 3 Pitaz’s Angranian Saiorse Warrior. LD(14,3) 1 Powell’s Cwacalon Son Of The Lord. Very animated brindle dog of excellent type. Good strong, clean head- good stop, round eye which could of course be darker. Well placed rose ears – just about all that our Standard asks for in a correct Stafford head. Good spring of rib and tuck up at waist. Well developed at the rear, well bend stifle and moved well. 2 Dewar’s Mintmar Just The Man. Handsome brindle dog of great type who looked miserable on the day. Close decision with 1. Good shaped head of correct proportions. Good stop and strength in foreface. Good bone and clean, wide front. Short coupled but perhaps because he was not happy he tended to hunch himself up which made his croup fall away and spoilt his outline. Good bend of stifle and moved very well. 3 Pearce & Ward’s Absolute Star. OD (13,1) 1 Small’s Merimna Mind Your Own. Compact brindle of type and strength. Very good, clean head, which balanced well with his body. Good stop, round eye, good proportions and depth throughout. Well placed rose ears. Good lay back of shoulders, good bone, front and feet. Good spring of rib with correct tuck up at waist. Short coupled, good musculation and well bent stifle, moved well. Res. CC. 2 Coats & Greenwood’s Ch Bellerophon Bevan Boy. Black brindle with a terrific head – large skull, good stop, round eye, great strength of foreface well placed rose ears. Good strength of bone, wide front, good spring of rib. Well tucked up and good rear end he moved well. A super Champion but for me today he just looked slightly un-balanced – i.e. size of skull to body. 3 Johnson & Pushko’s Rus. Ch. Tillcarr Tillerman. MPB(10,1) 1 Simpson’s Briganah Breaking Dawn. Up-standing brindle of class. Well shaped head with good depth of foreface. Dark eye and well placed rose ears. Clean front and enough bone and rib for her age. Moved well. 2 Partlett’s Janikastco Miss Hellfire. Typey red. One of, I think, three sisters in this class – a litter to be proud of. Good shaped head, rose ears. Good stop – which will be come more defined with age. Good weight of bone strong, well padded feet. Enough rib for her age. Well bent stifle and moved well. This bitch appeared happy with herself and confident for her age. I was a little concerned to see how many of the youngsters in this and the next class were very nervous – beyond what I would have expected in puppies at their first shows. 3 Hunt’s Carnig Cheeky Rascal TAF. PB(6,2) 1 Hart’s Albermarbull Sweet Pea. Almost pure white. Excellently shaped head – good stop, round dark eye, strong foreface, all set off by well placed ears. Good bone. Front yet to develop. Enough rib for her age. Well bent stifle. Overall needs to tighten up – which she should do with age. 2 Hyde’s Sedgbred Beacon Baroness. Neat and tidy black brindle bitch. Nice expression, good proportions, stop yet to develop properly. Enough bone and front coming on. Feet a bit long. Good spring of rib and well developed hind quarters moved O.K. 3 McClements’ Cherie At Jodanzac NAF TAF. JB(9,1) 1 Trow’s Hubbulls The Promise. A dog of mine once won a trophy which was engraved ‘every dog has its day’ and for me this was this bitch’s day. She shone with type, class, balance and animation. Superb head – as it should be. Short and deep – right through to her muzzle. Good proportions of muzzle to skull, excellent stop giving her a round eye well placed to look straight ahead. Ears rose and well set at the side of her head. Such a good underjaw with tight lips – and yet she still looks like a bitch because her expression is kind and the size of her skull in proportion with her body. This beautiful clean head leads through to a strong, clean neck of good length, without being reachy. Clean well laid shoulders, good weight of bone, without being stuffy. Feet could be tighter. Good spring of rib and good tuck up at waist. Close, short red coat on a body which was tightly constructed and lacking in fleshiness. Not ultra-short in couplings. Good bend of stifle she moved well and happily. My Bitch CC and BOB. 2 Winwood & Tunnan’s Cursus Summer Storm JW. Another classy bitch of strength and class. Very good shaped head – good stop, good proportions, nice skull, dark round eye and well placed rose ears. Clean neck and shoulders. Good bone and front. Nice spring of rib, pronounced waist and well bent stifle. Overall I felt she could do with just a bit more covering – believing as I do that any Stafford has a fighting weight, a show weight and a sitting at home retired weight. Close, gleaming coat showing her good condition. 3 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Hasina Bahiti. YB(6,1) 1 Hopkins’ Trufflestaff Hasina Bahiti. Brindle / white markings. Very well shaped head – good stop and proportions, Good depth throughout, round well placed eye giving great expression. Nice weight of bone but another who wants to stand pin-toed. Enough rib and good tuck up. Well bent stifle and moved well. 2 Reed’s Zakstaff Sophies Choice. Pretty black brindle who did nothing to help herself. If only she had relaxed and stood upright to be assessed. Lovely head – good proportions, well defined stop, round dark eyes and well placed ears. Just enough bone for me and more bone would give her stronger feet. Good spring of rib, nice tuck up. Well bent stifle but tending to fall down on herself because she is not really relaxed. 3 Hubble’s Hubbulls She’s The One. GB(2,1) 1 Stanway & Cockayne’s Waystaff Double Strike. Stood alone but well worthy of a first prize. Very good head shape – well proportioned, good depth of muzzle, round dark eye and well placed ears. Clean in head and front. . Good front and weight of bone. Well sprung rib and shapely body. Moved well. PGB(14,2) 1 Taylor’s Niatona Knitted By Nanas. Fine upstanding brindle. Good head, strength in the foreface and round eye. Great front with well laid shoulders, giving good width. Good bone ending in well padded strong feet. Nice spring of rib, good tuck up and well angled hind quarters. Moved well when on a free lead. A fine type of bitch who will do the breed proud. The type I like. 2 Farkas’ Maxsta Madonna. Strong headed brindle. Good shaped head and round eyes looking straight at you. Slightly shorter in foreface than 1 but not lippy. Good weight of bone and width at front. Bit long cast and not quite the condition of the first place. 3 Francis & Hillman’s Samtan Forget Me Not JW. LB(13,3) 1 Dewar’s Mintmar One For One. Throughout this class I found the animals with the best heads did not always have the body to match but this bitch was the nearest to balance that I could find. Good proportions in this head and a lot of depth through the foreface. Good stop and round eye. Clean neck of about right length, good front with well placed shoulders and good bone. Short coupled, well sprung rib. Well developed rear quarters and she moved well. 2 Bouter’s Old Cross Guns Dearbhil JW. Lovely head on this brindle. Good proportions, defined stop and plenty of depth throughout. Round eye and well placed ears – if not the smallest. Good bone and clean front. Good rib but not particularly well defined body – could do with a bit more tuck up. Well put together rear quarters and she moved well. 3 Higgins’ Spinjack Mistletoe Magic For Acrestaff. OB(11,2) 1 Blacker’s Ch Crossguns Memphis Belle. Very sporting of this exhibitor to bring this record breaking Champion under me. Examining her closely does not disappoint. Head of the best – strong and well defined. Pronounced stop and the accompanying round well placed eyes. Good depth throughout. All set off by the best of rose ears, well placed correctly at the side of her head. Excellent weight of bone, wide front and well laid back shoulders. Short coupled body and well angulated stifles. Moved well. I felt that as she grows older she has thickened a bit and that this particularly noticeable when viewing her from above. But a close decision – it was just the younger girl’s day today. Res. CC. 2 Hopkins’ Ch Trufflestaff Monifa Kanika JW. A classy little model of a brindle this one. Correct shaped head, good stop, round eye, well set rose ears. Good bone for her frame. Good front. Well sprung rib and good cut up behind. Well constructed back end and as a result she moved very well. Very close decision with the first. She did not seem particularly happy with herself to-day but a very worthy Champion. 3 Simpson’s Ch Briganah Black Orchid JW. Clare Lee |
